Jan-06-18  zanzibar: <chessgames> an important first step would be to allow bulk submission of tournaments.

That means grafting comment stream from tentative game pages onto the the final PGN - which means injecting a diff of PGN into the comment stream if a PGN movelist isn't the same.

Etc., etc.

* * * * *

But back to this specific tournament...

In this case the compound round number could/should be used to denote phase (rapid/blitz/bullet) and game number within phase:

< [Round "<phase>.<game>"] >

That way an end user has a chase to track time control even if the game PGN doesn't explicitly mention it.

Otherwise, well, it's virtually hopeless isn't it?

Common sense should suggest whoever on <CG> first posts the tournament page should put the basics on <CG>'s page - again to ensure the info on <CG> is there and independent of the vicissitudes of the net.

  chessgames.com: <Today's GotD pun should be pulled.>

When the pun was approved I decided that "Injun" is an ignorant mispronunciation and not, at least today, a racial epithet. Upon further reflection, I must question my decision.

I am truly sorry if some people are offended, but I think what's in our hearts is the important thing, and no malice was intended.

Disgusting weakness! The PC police have forced your hand. Injun is how the Brits (some) pronounce it.

  chessgames.com: From the PGN specs:

<9.6.1: Tag: TimeControl

This uses a list of one or more time control fields. Each field contains a descriptor for each time control period; if more than one descriptor is present then they are separated by the colon character (":"). The descriptors appear in the order in which they are used in the game. The last field appearing is considered to be implicitly repeated for further control periods as needed.>

Written in 1995 there are no provisions for increments etc. but I'm sure we can find a consensus of how it's formatted by other popular chess databases.

Moreover, the question is, who's going to do all that research? It would be fairly easy to explicitly provide the TimeControl tag of new tournaments from this point going forward, but to modify games from the 20th century and earlier is a daunting undertaking. Still, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

A niggardly admission, but an admission nonetheless.

It does draw out the best in some of the crowd, though.

Jan-06-18  diceman: No wonder REBEL disappeared.

"Engin" is stigmatizing.

Tabanus: <CG> Tradewise Hastings Congress (2017) (which consisted of many events) should be just "Hastings (2017/18)" as we agreed in the Bistro. Same with all other Hastings's after 2000. They are not so many that you need a program to fix it IMO.
Jan-06-18  technical draw: Everyone is trying to clean up their unPC puns. May I suggest Spic and Span for a thorough cleaning job?
Jan-06-18  zanzibar: <TD> Spic?

My mother was a pretty clean Spic.

What exactly are you injun-ring by <Spic and Span>?!

Jan-06-18  technical draw: Now, now, let's take our minds out of the gutter. I'm merely mentioning a cleaning product. We must learn the difference between Spic and Span and Shinola.
Jan-06-18  zanzibar: <Spic and Span and pray for rain>

<First we’ll use Spahn, then we’ll use Sain,
Then an off day, followed by rain.
Back will come Spahn, followed by Sain,
And followed, we hope, by two days of rain.>

Tabanus: It's perfect CG, thanks. Fixed after 10 years of agony :)

"Hastings Masters" was/is an alternative, but the main event also had several other names through the years.

Tabanus: IMSA Elite Mind Games (2016) (0 games) should be removed from TI.

World Cup (2015) still has "Fairmont hotel" in Site. After two more slips last year I'm now sure that Sargon is joking me.

Jan-07-18  Alien Math: something i think Sargon has to deal with is juggling all the info available between the on file, current page, and the data chunks that people bring in, and hoping they selected the right one to replace the current version

A few years ago someone got fired for using the word "niggard" or "niggardly". Some Blacks at his place of work got offended. (This is a true story, I'm not trying to be funny.)

You did the most complaining about "Injun" yet now you use "niggardly"? Is this an attempt at irony?

chessgames.com: Ahh, thanks for pointing that out. I've got you covered, go back and you'll see your article there.

You see, long before there was such a thing as a tournament introduction, we had this arcane system of putting HTML files in a special directory for a few random new events, usually to display logos or links or other frills. If you run into another like that just let us know.

Jan-07-18  Big Pawn: I went to the database fun facts page today and noticed that it has changed drastically. The kibitzers with the most posts table does not include kibitzes from the rogoff or cafe pages.

This skews the facts about the number of kibitzes here. The database says fun *facts*. The way the list is now, I can easily identify a number of kibitzers who post silly, one-line, off topic drivel in each other's forums, sometimes in extraordinary numbers, and they top the list.

The rogoff and cafe pages are part of the community here and their posts should be counted. Removing posts from rogoff and the cafe is arbitrary.

Tabanus: Thanks CG. I sent some slips on the Bilbao events (of which you have all), it should be "Grand Slam Chess Final" for 2008-2012, and (after the Grand Slam organization was dissolved in 2012, though the name Grand Slam stuck to the Bilbao event) "Bilbao Masters" for 2013-2016.
Jan-08-18  zanzibar: Looks like some little elfings have been busy Spic & Spanning this forum...

Funny/upsetting so many other spots were missed.

Jan-08-18  zborris8: I like the fact that your site celebrates the Holidays. If you have plans to post an April Fools Day Game, would you consider AlphaZero winning from an outlandish and unsound variation such as the Ware, 1.a4, bringing both rooks out like a beginner, or a win from the black side of the Fred Defense, etc.? The joke being that the AI shucks all known theory out the window and concludes that the worst openings are quite sound after all. We'd been doing it wrong all along. Thanks!
