 | | Annie K.: Goodbye, Daniel...
I couldn't post since I was informed of Daniel's loss by his girlfriend on the 26th... now at least I don't have to hide how deeply sad I am, and why, anymore. :( <Lee> please get in touch with me. I know a lot about what needs to be done around the site, both the routine and the special occasions (Clue Hunt, Caissars...), who did what, and about Daniel's plans for the site. I can help you learn your way around. I'm no programmer, but I have been in almost daily contact with Daniel. I learned that since Albert's withdrawal and later death, Daniel didn't have someone to talk to regularly who shared his passion for Chessgames; as he told me, you were interested more in programming issues (plus handling certain tasks like correction slips), and Kevin was interested more in the chess aspects (choosing the PotD, sometimes live relays...), but neither of you were very involved or familiar with the community aspect of the site. With Albert, Daniel lost both his best friend, and his only partner who shared <all> of chessgames with him. He was overworked, and by late 2015, he was overwhelmed. That's when I started acting as his informal assistant, to try and relieve him of minor tasks that he wasn't absolutely necessary for, and took up discussing anything and everything related to cg with him, because he needed someone to talk to (and I know the site very well, myself). Now, more than anything else, I want to make sure that his wish that his life's work and passion, <Chessgames.com> does not disappear with him, comes true. Please let me help. |

| Jul-30-18 | | Dr Winston OBoogie: You're a good person, Annie. I'm just shocked. Don't know what else to say :( |

| Jul-30-18 | | Tiggler: <Annie K.>:<Now, more than anything else, I want to make sure that his wish that his life's work and passion, <Chessgames.com> does not disappear with him, comes true. > Well, I agree, but it is a very tall order to even fill in for Daniel, let alone replace him. Most impressive of all to me were his patience and even-handedness in dealing with difficult situations. He always was a moderating influence when arguments strayed out of bounds. I'm not just talking about habitual offenders: I guess almost all of us have gotten out of hand at times. When it happened to me, an email from Daniel made me stop and think, and decide that he was right. |

When it happened to me, an email from Daniel made me stop and think, and decide that he was right.> Looking back I agree. He always said to me be patient but I wasn't. I'm glad he never passed away with us on bad terms, I'm very sad. <Daniel didn't have someone to talk to regularly who shared his passion for Chessgames; as he told me> Poor fella :( |

 | | offramp: I only ever emailed Daniel once, and he sent a very polite reply. I never pestered him again. He had tremendous patience and diplomacy, and I will remember him for those, and his humour. |
|
| Jul-30-18 | | thegoodanarchist: Daniel let me post my stupid jokes in here without deleting them. He was patient and good-hearted. |

 | | harrylime: I'm in shock and deeply saddened by this news. This is a great site and it's a great site because of Daniel. I never had much contact with him but on the few occasions I did he was always polite, kind and rational, exuding the patience of a saint. Jeez I log on in here and come across this news.So unexpected. It's very sad. RIP Daniel |

 | | tpstar: So Daniel Freeman spends his life building a wonderful chess site for the world to enjoy, then one of his final memories here is watching career criminal <Mark Finan> drive Nigel Short away. It doesn't get any worse than this. I said you were a lost cause and I was right. |

| Jul-30-18 | | YouRang: Oh wow - I just saw the awful news about Daniel's death. I had suspected that maybe there were some personal issues to explain the non-response by cg.com to the reported problems on the Biel tournament page, but this is a completely unexpected jolt. I'm sure that there's much more to be said about Daniel than that he built a great site that many chess fans have enjoyed for years, and that he administrated it with fairness. But I thank him for his creation and wish his family and friends peace as they cope with the loss. |

| Jul-30-18 | | Dr Winston OBoogie: Jim. I always thought he cared about Daniel. After THAT ^^^ he's shown his true colours. Alisa (I'm guessing she's Daniel's wife or girlfriend?) said this.. Let's all abide by it... <amarks112: Please honor him better than this. He lived for you guys, you were always with him, he considered you guys his children, and tried his best to make sure you had a place to frolic, curtailing behaviors that crossed the lines.> Amen. RIP Daniel Freeman. I'm still shocked and very sad xxx |

| Jul-30-18 | | rogge: I have seen two members trying to score cheap points in the aftermath of the tragic news today. That will not be forgotten. |
|
| Jul-30-18 | | Dr Winston OBoogie: It's upsetting, Rogge. I don't know how else to describe it but disturbing and upsetting. |
|
| Jul-30-18 | | Keyser Soze: Oh <rooge>..
So beautiful to be a nice guy on this sad day eh? Some people become so sweet and give so much confort today to others despite being a bully with the same late person a very few time ago... How`s that <not> scoring points rogge? How that not saving face or not being a phony? That is almost offensive or mockery of him. I love your selective outrages <rogge>. Always on the wrong side.. <That will not be forgotten.> I hope not so! As I said , Public Service Information. |

| Jul-30-18 | | hms123: I worked very closely with Daniel on
<<<Chess Life, August, 2011, <<Brave New World: Human Intuition and Computer-assisted Chess>>http://www.chessgames.com/chess_lif...> > As a result of that experience, Daniel asked me to help out with some other things around the site. He was a great editor and great friend. I am very sorry to hear of his death. howard |

| Jul-30-18 | | Dr Winston OBoogie: Keyser. Please listen to Alisa's wishes. Today :) |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: I have no doubt that <Sargon> already knows his way around the community quite well; but I do hope he accepts <Annie>'s offer to help. <Annie> is a highly intelligent woman who has always had the best interests of the site in mind, and has already contributed incredible amounts of unassuming work to help out, from the Player Pronunciation Project (entirely her brainchild) to keeping the ChessBookie Game alive to helping organize the latest Holiday Present Hunts to making sure the introductions on topical tournament pages are informative and up to date; and those are just some of the most visible bits. Nobody knows this site and community better than she does, apart from maybe two people who would be less than ideal helpers in other respects :) In short, nobody is more qualified; and while I'm sure there's a few users out there who would rather not see her anywhere near <Sargon>'s ear, for somebody who's been here so long and done so much she hasn't ruffled many feathers. <Sargon> probably already knows this, but in case anyone among the kibitzers should have any doubts about it, <Annie> was a genuine friend of Daniel's who held him in the highest respect and always stood by him when he was criticized by others here; even when those critics were also her friends (like, um, me) and she had every opportunity to go along. I wish the best to <Sargon>, and <Annie>, and all other friends of Daniel in these difficult times, and hope Chessgames will survive and prosper for a long time yet. |

 | | Check It Out: <Saffuna> I agree. Lame of tpstar to splash remembrances of the man who created this great website with his ongoing historic/political cg persecutions. I'm near tears over this. What a loss. |
