RIP Daniel Freeman - it is not how long one lived, it is how well one lived.

Richard Taylor: I was confused here, I thought he had died already but it was his partner. I have just discovered that Daniel Freeman has died as well (in 2015 his partner). This is tragic for a man to die so young.

My feelings go out to his family and chesgames.com

Jul-31-18  thegoodanarchist: My understanding is that chessgames.com was founded by Alberto A Artidiello and Daniel Freeman together.

Alberto A Artidiello passed away on March 1, 2015

Jul-31-18  Pyke: R.I.P. Daniel, you WIll be missed ...
Jul-31-18  Tiggler: Repost from <jessicafischerqueen>'s chessforum:

<jessicafischerqueen:
<Ohio> Having read the posts by <Sargon>, <Switch>, <crawfb5 (Big)>, and especially <AnnieK>, I'm revising my alarm about cg.com becoming extinct.

I don't think that will happen. We don't know what provisions <Daniel> made, but I'm sure he made some. Clearly his friends are more than capable, and I believe they are willing to step up, given the chance.>

Those of us who care, a lot, may have to step up in another way. The finances of chessgames.com are not very solid, I imagine. Daniel kept it alive despite that by putting in very long hours for very low pay, so that he could pursue his dream and his self-asigned mission. He always resisted the idea of a subscription for all users, knowing that many would have to leave the site and that new blood would be more difficult to recruit.

From time to time I've seen premium members gripe about the so-called free-loaders who were getting most of the site benefits without paying.

I guess Daniel saw it differently: I think he viewed the premium membership as a way of letting the most active users who could afford it sponsor the site. Lord knows it is a very modest amount that we pay for that privilege. Some of us may have to consider what we might be willing to contribute to put the site on a more sound financial footing. That way the new owners, Daniel's heirs, may be less inclined to pull the plug.

In my town, there would be no performing arts, quality live music venues, museums, zoos, botanical gardens, or anything to raise the spirits without charitable donors. Their nominal reward is to get titles like Benefactor, Sponsor, Supporting Member etc.

If you and other influential long-standing members like <Ohio>, <AnnieK>, <YouRang>, <FSR>, and a dozen others (regardless of financial means) I could think of, think this is a worthwhile idea I would ask you to put it about and see if we can knock it into shape as a proposal to the site owners.

Jul-31-18  Tiggler: <cg.com> Is anyone actually in charge at the moment? I completely understand if it is too soon to answer, but as soon as that is known, please introduce yourself to us here and let us know what you need.
Jul-31-18  zanzibar: <Tiggler> Sargon is, from my understanding... as he wrote:

<[...] <ChessGames.com> was a <labor of love> for Dan, and will stand as one of his greatest legacies, and I will be <attempting> to fill Dan's <large> shoes by assuming administration of the site and database for the time being.

[...]

Nonetheless, I ask that everyone <please> bear with me while I begin this daunting process, which will be immensely <challenging>, to say the very least.

Peace be with you, Dan.

Best regards,
Sargon>

kingscrusher: My deepest condolences to friends and family of Daniel Freeman.

Daniel was very nice and uploaded my games when I emailed and always generally helpful. I am really saddened by this news.

Chessgames.com is a wonderful legacy to the creators and is one of my all time favourite websites for checking out games.

I hope we as a community can make sure this site lives on and prospers for future generations to enjoy this website and as a legacy to the founders.

Aug-01-18  Big Pawn: Who is in charge of this site now?

I have a complaint of criminal threatening.

<Travis Bickle: BP, I only have a few weeks left on this site.. Then I will spend my time hunting you down a$$#0le! A good friend of mine is a lifer as a Seal in the Navy.. He's working on your IP Address.. When I have your address tough guy I'm going to punch the schit out of you faggot!!>

Is this site out of control now that Daniel has passed, or is someone in charge here?

For whatever it's worth, I am going to file a complaint here https://www.ic3.gov/complaint/splas...

Just to be on the safe side. A lot of people make criminal threats online, including stalking, like this threat, and threats of physical harm, and then they are on the news.

So even though Daniel just died and no one wants to hear this, that's not excuse to condone criminal threatening and stalking.

I've got to do what I've got to do.

Aug-02-18  scout118: Rest in peace, Daniel Freeman. Sincere condolences to your loved one and may your legacy last.
Aug-02-18  morfishine: I would hope information pertaining to the funeral arrangements, viewing, a remembrance website for eulogies/donations, etc., would be posted here at <CG>

<Aug-01-1 JimNorCal: A note to <Sargon> as he brings order to the site. My iPhone and iPad/Laptop show differing displays for Player of the Day. Phone still shows Daniel but the larger devices have moved on to Nisipeanu. Probably there is a separate set of data chosen to be optimized/efficient for small devices.>

<Aug-01-18 JimNorCal: I figure that there is a fairly overwhelming learning curve to be surmounted, still, reports from users are doubtless helpful even if they can't be addressed right away ... if you are a list maker style guy :) :)>

WannaBe: Don't know who is in charge of the domain name, but it expires in 2019, according to whois.com

Without the domain name and the registered IP, this site would not exist.

What the hell?

That is pretty serious. Such threats are unacceptable. Can not be ignored.

<travis bickle> crazy or what?

Where was this threat made ? Kibitzer cafe?

Aug-05-18  AylerKupp: <Big Pawn> I've got to do what I've got to do.>

There is already a process in place for reporting users who violate <chessgames.com>'s posting guidelines. On the right bottom of every page there is a list of their posting guidelines and a link (Blow the Whistle (chessgames.com chessforum)) to report the violation to a site administrator. I can assure you that the process works.

The site administrators obvously don't have the same enforcement powers as the FBI but they certainly can revoke the posting priviledges for repeat violators of their posting guidelines.

Aug-05-18  JimNorCal: The technical challenges faced by Sargon and any who come fwd to help may be daunting. But the scariest words that I read here have to do with formal ownership of CG, the possibility of probate and other issues related to the legal situation.

Good luck, everyone.

Aug-05-18  Tiggler: <JimNorCal> I don't know where you read those scary words, unless you are referring to my post:

chessgames.com chessforum

<Some of us may have to consider what we might be willing to contribute to put the site on a more sound financial footing. That way the new owners, Daniel's heirs, may be less inclined to pull the plug.>

I posted that here and at <jessicafischerqueen>'s forum almost a week ago, and I have been astounded that there has been zero feedback.

All you fans who claim to be concerned about the future of <chessgames.com> need to consider whether you are one who will put his money where his mouth is.

Aug-05-18  JimNorCal: Yes, yours but also OCF wrote on the topic as well.

How do we know the financial situation of CG is dire, or at least shaky? The cost to run the site would not be so terribly much, would it? I assume there's a hosting company doing a lot of the routine tasks. Did Daniel have a "day job"? I'm not doubting you, just puzzled.

Aug-05-18  Tiggler: <How do we know the financial situation of CG is dire, or at least shaky?>

I don't really know: I am just horribilizing, one might say. But Daniel has alluded to tight budget issues in the past, and we do know that the site just lost its mainstay, who probably was willing to work day and night for next to nothing. Does anyone imagine he was doing for money???

Check It Out: Ensuring the viability of this website should be priority number one. And not just for the community, such as it is; the chess documentation on this website is historically significant and valuable to the game we love.
Aug-05-18  JimNorCal: Well stated, <CheckItOut>.

Here's my concern. Programming talent, even money, are obstacles that can likely be overcome. But legal issues would leave the CG user community helpless. I'm not a lawyer, so maybe I too am horribilizing :) but I imagine that if CG is considered part of DF's estate and is put into probate for a lengthy period then a lot of bad things could happen.

Let's hope for the best. Well, sure, and that's easy enough to do until we know more about the true details of the situation.

<Sargon> has pledged to make a strong effort on the tech side of things, is there any indication of someone coming forward as the "Voice of CG"?

Check It Out: <JimNorCal> I think your concern about the legal status and ownership of Chessgames Servicess LLC is spot on. Probate can be tricky depending on Daniel's will status.

<Wannabe> said the domain is good through 2019, but that's not that far off. Do you have a more exact date, Wannabe, or are we talking December 31, 2019?

Daniel was very smart. I'm hoping he had this all figured out, but 51 is so young. My age.

I'm also worried about the DOS attacks that Daniel has frequently had to deal with. I hope Sargon has that covered.

  chancho: Didn't take Wikipedia long:

<Co-founder and longtime webmaster Daniel Freeman died on July 24, 2018, at the age of 51. The site is currently being administered on an interim basis by a user with the handle "Sargon", a longtime friend and business partner of Freeman's who had assisted him with management of the site at various times.>

Aug-06-18  JimNorCal: When some began to focus on the investigative details of DF's death I admit I thought it was inappropriate and a bit ghoulish.

Hmmm, I still feel that way .... But now that the "Scooby Doo" team has surfaced a new name (Demetrious Cross) my curiosity is piqued. Is the theory that DC is the actual identity of a phantom DF? Or are they both real people, perhaps CG business partners with different names, different birthdays but died in the same event (car crash, drug deal gone wrong, ...)
