 | | WannaBe: <laskersteinitz> Two letter last names are not searchable, like Yu, So, Li, etc... And I see that he is not in the drop down box on the home page; but, if you type in Wesley in the EZ search, W. So comes up!! The kibitzing thing shouldn't be that hard to do, add << Earliest Kibitzing which would take you to page 1, (or you manually append &kpage=1 at the end of the url for that page) >> Latest Kibitzing to take you to the page page, (or you can manually just delete everything that is after the ? mark...) Hope this helps! |

 | | chessgames.com: <laskersteinitz: I searched for "So" on the home page> We just noticed that ourselves. Chessgames does indeed index two letter words, but "so" is what is called a "stop word" -- it's such a common word that it doesn't want to index it at all. We just put a special clause in so that a simple search on the name "so" all by itself brings up Wesley. It's sort of a band-aid but better than nothing. search "So" |

 | | chessgames.com: Jafar, do you mean Mamedyarov vs Wang Hao for round 3.1? That game is not available yet. |
|
| Nov-28-09 | | Eyal: For some reason there's a problem in the official site with the Mamedyarov game, but chessvibes provide the full pgn - http://www.chessvibes.com/reports/i... |

What's the point of a standard if no one follows it? |

 | | Phony Benoni: <notyetagm> That's why I shake my head ruefully whenever a suggestion is made about searching by tournament name. Especially for older events, the data is just too inconsistent. But the misapplication of a standard is only part of the problem. Another big issue is inconsistency about <which> data is recorded. For instance, go to this collection: Game Collection: USSR Championship 1963, and look at the ten games from the first round. You'll find eight different ways used to record Event and Site. Or take the series of Swiss tournaments sponsored by Louis B. Statham at Lone Pine. Should the event be "Louis B. Statham Tournament" or "Lone Pine"? The former is technically correct, but most people would expect them to be called "Lone Pine". And then you need to consider display issues. It's a lot of fun trying to find a specific event when all that is given on the page of search results is <it>. I deal with this sort of issue every day at work, and about the only solution I can see is having a Grand Poobah in Charge of Standardizing PGN who directs an army of underpaid minions who scrub every single game score to bring some kind of consistency to the data. And who's got the time or money for that? (Not to mention the fact that you miss out on all the fun of actually looking at the games.) |

 | | chessgames.com: I swear, Mark Crowther has some sort of magic wand. Just when we're halfway finished cleaning up the BNblitz PGN he provides the clean scores at The Week in Chess (http://www.chess.co.uk/twic/twic.html) ready for download. And so, partially thanks to TWIC, we can now present the BNbank Blitz (2009). Enjoy! Incidentally, I think I (Daniel Freeman) owe an apology. I was very critical of the official site in my previous post (using words like "slop"). I was just being emotional. Truth be told, we should be thankful that there are official sites at all, and we shouldn't blame them for making mistakes. They don't do this day-in and day-out like we do; so we can't expect them to be experts at running chess sites. (And it's not like we don't make mistakes ourselves!) Instead of whining about it here, a more productive action would have been to courteously point out the error to their webmaster. My apologies if I stepped over the line here. |

For some peculiar reason, when I click on the link to Battle of the Brain's 3 in my Profile, I am taken not to my most recent post there but instead just to the most recent page of the team game. This is different to how these links usually function. |
|
| Nov-30-09 | | Eyal: <CG> In the World Cup, I've noticed that B Savchenko vs Y Shulman, 2009 is a corrupt duplicate of B Savchenko vs Y Shulman, 2009. Also,
Naiditsch-Svidler from round 3.2 (noted by <amadeus>) is still missing from the database. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Truth be told, we should be thankful that there are official sites at all, and we shouldn't blame them for making mistakes.> Amen to that. At least the games are preserved, which is the most important thing. We may be critical at times, but we must always be grateful for the work others do. Much as we're grateful for yours, Daniel. |

| Dec-01-09 | | sulotas: Correction Demanded: All the games of today (December 1st - Round 4 Day 2) seem to have been marked as November 30th on their score-sheets here at the chessgames.com. This causes confusion in the game list as some of the yesterday's games come after today's games. |

 | | WannaBe: None of this calendar error would occur, if we switch over to the Chinese Lunar calendar way of doing things, then again, if we switch to the Mayan way, all things would end by 2012... |
|
| Dec-02-09 | | sulotas: <chessgames.com> Thanks for paying attention. It was so weird that Chessvibes and Chessbase had the same error, too, and I kindly urged both sites to correct it and they did so soon. Maybe you all guys receive these games from a single source, which is the responsible for the error in the first place? I don't know... Anyway. Thanks. |
|
| Dec-02-09 | | sulotas: <WannaBe> LOL... There is no meaning in switching the calendars if it is true that everything will end in 2012 as the latest prophet Roland Emmerich implies. |

 | | Tabanus: <cg> From Wikipedia: "Sasha is a male and female given name. It originated in Russia and other countries of Eastern and Central Europe as a diminutive version of the names Alexander and Alexandra." From this, from FIDE (one player: Alexander), and from searching the web, I am 99,99% certain that Alexander Belezky (13 games) and Sasha Belezky (69 games) are the same player. |

 | | Domdaniel: The database, despite a lot of work by CG staff and various volunteers, is still littered with ghosts, doppelgangers and multiples. I've been meaning to make a list, but who has the time anymore? One example. USA GM Robert Byrne has not played in the Irish championship. It's Ray (or Raymond or R.) Byrne. I know: I've played him. But as Daniel Freeman implies, nobody's really to blame. PGN world is full of inconsistencies. BTW, Daniel, 'slop' seems appropriate for the slop in question. Nakamura playing blitz in the year 20004? Even Star Trek would reject that script. And it takes more than vooodooo to fix it, toooo, |
