| Jun-20-10 | | Whitehat1963: I just thought of a new feature for you: "Find the upcoming blunder" or "Avoid the blunder." It could work similarly to the puzzle of the day, although it might be a bit easier to figure out than a puzzle, since it's usually easier to bad moves than it is a good one. Therefore, the solutions would have to look like good moves or at least "natural-looking" moves that are in fact immediate losers. A simple example:
At the end of this game, G Crown vs R Guy, 1946, it's critical to see that the black king effectively kills his own knight by moving anywhere onto the fourth rank after 41. Rxf5+. Thus, seeing the best way to get out of check is probably a good candidate for this feature (at least early in the week). For weekenders, of course, you would be looking at sequences of moves to avoid -- this might be difficult to find every day. I imagine this could be a good teaching tool because it would force one to look at the game from a defensive perspective, from an opponent's perspective, "How is he trying to trap me and how can I avoid stepping into that trap?" Just something to consider. |

 | | Annie K.: <cg.com> - hi guys... the My Favorites Page alignment got all messed up today, on my IPhone at least - investigations revealed the culprit to be a reeeeeaaalllllly loooong link (unbroken string of course) posted by somebody on my favorites list. Temporarily removing the poster from my list made the issue go away. We can has something done about that? Kthxbai. ;) |

 | | chessgames.com: <Annie K> I'd like to see the post in question. There are supposed to be safeguards to prevent people from breaking page format by typing things like "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!" but there are loopholes that let people do it inadvertently. There is a known bug regarding the tilde repeating, e.g. ~~~~~~~ (etc) will break formatting. We hate to delete posts that made some technical error of that sort but there is little alternative, but if we can prevent it from happening in the first place then the problem is adverted. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Whitehat1963> We've contemplated some puzzle situations like that, and usually opt against them, since it's just not normal to start a puzzle in a position where you are in check, or obligated to recapture a piece, or winning in many different ways, etc. But perhaps the idea merits having a special week dedicated to 7 such positions, if we can find them. |

Here is a great idea: how about creating a forum/page just for <FORUM REQUESTS>? That way it will be easy to see which forums have been requested. I am asking for the following forum for an ongoing tournament: <Wroclaw Chess Festival, Poland> http://www.turniej.polonia.wroclaw....
Round 5 Top Pairings:
(3½) Balogh – Piorun (4)
(3½) Macieja – Wojtaszek (3½)
(3½) Bartel – Markowski (3½)
(3) Fridman – Zawadska (3)
(3) Swiersz – Tiviakov (3)
(3) Siechiechowisz – Markus (3)
(3) Simacek – Krupa (3) |

 | | Annie K.: <cg.com> hi, the Guess-the-Move background (dark square colors) are screwed up today. The problem only appears along with the move entry box - i.e., on the opponent's turn and throughout the opening sequence the board is normal, but whenever the move entry box appears, the dark squares disappear, and the whole board is the color of the light squares. This makes playing completely impossible on smaller screens (such as an IPhone), since it's too easy to press the wrong square when you can only guess where the square borders are. I hope this is easy to fix! ;) Another suggestion, would it be possible, when IPhone users are detected, to get the GtM playing screen to zero in on the board and move entry area automatically with each pageload? That would be great, as currently each time a page loads, I need to manually zoom close to the board in order to make the squares big enough to press... Lastly, I would once again ask for the number of moves in the game (which is given on the GtM main screen) to be included in the playing page information, since I keep having to switch to the main screen just to see how many moves I have left to catch up to / pass the par score. You did say that you're trying to prevent people looking for combos and tactical shots just because they know the game's end is near, but you also said you may reconsider that, and I still wish you would. :) |

 | | chessgames.com: <chessgames.com: en Guess the Move los cuadros del tablero desaparecen> we believe is another way of saying <the Guess-the-Move background (dark square colors) are screwed up today.> We located the source of this problem and it's working fine now. Thank you. <Juan31> Hemos situado el origen de este problema y ahora está funcionando. Gracias. |

 | | Annie K.: <chessgames.com: <<chessgames.com: en Guess the Move los cuadros del tablero desaparecen> we believe is another way of saying <the Guess-the-Move background (dark square colors) are screwed up today.>>> Yes, but I thought I'd add the info about the problem only appearing with the move entry box, in case you'd only try the first few moves of some game and find nothing wrong. :) And what about the other two points? ;) |

 | | chessgames.com: <would it be possible, when IPhone users are detected, to get the GtM playing screen to zero in on the board and move entry area automatically with each pageload?> That's exactly the kind of thing we are interested in doing when we start to support mobile devices more, perhaps even make a special page just for the mobile users which presents the data in a more compact format. For right now, iPhone users are not officially supported, although happily we've gotten reports that things have recently improved quite a bit for them. <Lastly, I would once again ask for the number of moves in the game (which is given on the GtM main screen) to be included in the playing page information> I think the reason why we omitted that is because if you know exactly when the game is going to end (it says it's a 28 move game and now you're coming up with your 27th move) that it's almost like cheating--you automatically start to look for a sacrifice. I believe during beta-testing of it we had that information--e.g. Move 21 of 38--and decided that it would be a better product without it, so we removed it. As you pointed out, the information has already been given to you, but we felt that when it is repeated on the playing page then the problem is much more pronounced. |

| Jul-02-10 | | Blunderdome: CG, is there some beef with the women's qualifying cycle? Nalchik never got a forum / games uploaded, and now Jermuk is being ignored (even though I and another kibitzer both requested it). Surely this event is important enough to have a forum? |

 | | Annie K.: <cg.com> re the GtM - yeah, I guess giving the game length information as "Move 21 of 38" - presumably right under the board - <would> be underscoring it a bit too much, but I'm not sure a "quiet" little number next to the par info in the box to the right (in the same format as given on the main page) would be all that conspicuous. Basically, since the number of moves is given on the main page anyway, its omission from the game page only inconveniences those of us with weaker short-term memories. And I'm also not sure just how many of those games actually involve sacrifices and sudden tactics at the end either. Anyway, thanks for the quick answers. :) |
