| Aug-08-10 | | achieve: Hi <chessgames>, could you create a page for the Rising Stars vs Experience tourney please? http://www.nhchess.com/
<The ‘Experience’ team consists of Boris Gelfand (Israel), Peter Svidler (Russia), Peter Heine Nielsen (Denmark), Loek van Wely (The Netherlands) and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (Serbia). The ‘Rising Stars’ are Hikaru Nakamura (United States), Fabiano Caruana (Italy),
Wesley So (The Philippines), Anish Giri (The Netherlands) and David Howell (England).> Dare I say a star-studded line-up!
First round is scheduled for Thursday, August 12. |

A good suggestion.
How about creating a <PENDING FORUMS> area on the front page where currently the newly created forums are listed? This would let us users know which forums you are in the process of creating. Thanks

| Aug-11-10 | | crawfb5: Would it be possible to generate an automated email when a submitted PGN score is added to the database? For example: <Your submitted game of <Korchnoi vs Maroczy, 1995> has been added to our database. Thanks for helping to improve our collection.> Perhaps even a checklist if it was examined and <wasn't> added, such as: <Your submitted game of <Santa vs The Elves, 1999> was not added because:-- it did not meet our quality standards
-- there was a problem with the PGN (missing moves, no result, format error, etc.) -- it duplicates another game already in the database> and so forth. I know there must be a quite a backlog, but would help, especially when a tournament games collection is missing a few games. Thanks. |

Thought I might mention that your home page needs some updating in the text below the POTD. |

 | | chessgames.com: <SugarDom> About being a biographer for the Wesley So page: our biographers usually tackle a wide set of players. We don't have specialists for one particular player, nor is there any need for that. Keep in mind that our biographies do not change frequently, or at least aren't supposed to. In our guideline page for biographers we specifically ask not to mention their current rating, since efforts to show information like that quickly become dated. Perhaps you have in mind an idea where the biography would change frequently, like a "wiki", that could show what tournaments he is playing in lately, links to events, latest rating updates, etc. That's a cool idea, but it's not the biography feature. Perhaps one day we can install a feature like "recent news" that would be active on players who are alive. So in summary, if you think you can rewrite the biography or make improvements, or add more information at the bottom, feel free to email it to chess@chessgames.com. Thanks for your volunteering to do this. Also: some quarrelsome posts will now be deleted. |

 | | chessgames.com: <towsen: How do I search for human vs. computer matches?> You can't really, but there is a trick that might help you. You see, every computer in the database has the string (Computer) at the end of its name. Therefore if you go to the homepage and type in "Computer" as player #1, you'll get all games involving computers. However some of them (if not most) will be computer-vs-computer games, so you'll just have to scan the list to look for names of humans. |

 | | chessgames.com: <computer chess guy: You seem to have done some PGN cleanup but most games in PGN now have the Result field before the players - should be after - and have EventDate after Date - should be after the 7 standard headers, according to the PGN "export" standard.> We've been meaning to clean that problem up for a long time now. Thanks for reminding us. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Eggman: on the Karpov-Kasparov World Championship Match (1987) page there is a factual error: the score of the 1987 Karpov-Sokolov Candidates is given as 7.5-4.5 for Karpov, but in fact he won 7.5-3.5> We will take your word on that, thank you. <Bdellovibrio: fix: Yifan Hou> I'm sorry, what needs fixing? |

 | | chessgames.com: <achieve, notyetagm, et al> About the world Junior championship, Najdorf Memorial, Ordix open, that Arctic event, etc.: most of them are online but there are no discussion forums yet. We are working on the homepage information and the discussion forums now. |

 | | chessgames.com: <crawfb5: Would it be possible to generate an automated email when a submitted PGN score is added to the database?> We have plans to do exactly that, or something very much like that. However we don't want to spend any more time improving the current submission software since plans are underway to replace it entirely. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Benzol: <chessgames> I'm losing track of myself. Can you tell me if I've already uploaded a game between Boleslavsky and Moiseev from the "Iskra" Championship played at Odessa in 1948?> You currently have a few games from Iskra in the upload queue, but none involving Moiseev. Feel free to add it to the queue, we'll be processing them within the next few days. By the way, if you ever make the mistake of uploading a game twice, it's no big deal. The second one will be automatically rejected, as long as you didn't make any significant changes to it (like the year, the players, the moves, etc.) |

 | | chessgames.com: Speaking of uploads, somebody has been recently uploading a large number of losses by member A J Goldsby to the database, mostly internet blitz games. For the record: We do NOT want blitz games except those involving at least one GM or WGM. Our "2200 guideline" only applies to standard length games; as the time controls get quicker, our rating requirements go up. It is quite obvious the member who did this had no interest in improving our database, but was instead attempting to aggravate Mr. Goldsby. Meanwhile legitimate contributors to the database are languishing in the queue while we are forced to sort this mess out. You know who you are, and so do we. Stop it. |

| Aug-14-10 | | hms123: <chessgames.com> I uploaded these games back in April to complete my game collection Game Collection: Bishop v Knight: the verdict (steve mayer) Are they still in the queue or do I need to try again?--thanks. <April 23, 2010 This collection is complete except for the following games:
Kotkov/Belinkov, 1971, Cheney/Mayer, 1990, Lukovnikov/Polugaevsky, 1983, Spassky/Nagaizev, 1967, Kindermann/Voiska, 1992, and Ruban/Ehlvest, 1993 (Novosibirsk).

 | | chessgames.com: <Annie K.: <cg.com> hi guys - the store is a great idea, but any chance of offering those shirts in colors other than white?> Thanks! We have seriously considered colors, but it makes our inventory explode. Right now we have 8 boxes of shirts. If we offered them in two other colors we'd have 24 boxes. In short, if the store is an enormous success, we'll hire somebody just to tend to the store and have not only new colors but also new designs. If not, then we're still glad to have it, but we'll have to avoid extensively large inventories. |

 | | chessgames.com: <hms123> I see the file, most of the games were rejected for tiny technical reasons. There were "gremlins" in some of the games, like 0—0—0 (that's zero, long dash, zero, long dash, zero) instead of O-O-O (O, dash, O, dash, O). Problems like that often are the result of somebody making PGN using a program like Microsoft Word. Far more appropriate would be a program like Notepad. The gremlins weren't really why the games were rejected though, the big problem is that the PGN did not end with the result (0-1, 1-0, or 1/2-1/2). Perhaps you thought that was redundant since the PGN says at the top what the result is, and it is redundant, but that's how PGN works. Anyhow I tried to fix them by hand, see if you find the games online now. |
