Sep-03-10  AgentRgent: I understand that Chessgames.com wants to use the Challenges to increase membership, but perhaps new members should be forced to wait a short while before being allowed to vote.. (depending on the time controls, but probably 2-3 days is sufficient for most). This will go a long way to avoid ballot stuffing tricks as well as encouraging new members to become part of the team by reading/posting in the games forum. Just a suggestion...
Sep-03-10  bharatiy: <chessgames.com> Natalia's husband has been disrespectful and moreover there is bad feeling in many of member's mind about this. Even if he now withdraws this game will not be fun. It will be remembered for this scandal. It was good to know in the beginning that some well followed chess blogs talked about this game. Now it better to cancel this game. An apology is due from Natalia's side in any case. Please cancel this game.
Sep-03-10  crazybird: After Peter Zhdanov has said this, you frankly cannot let the game continue.

<As Natalia has an impeccable reputation in the world of professional chess, she would advise all her colleagues to stay out of any ChessGames’ events since there is a high chance of getting their image damaged by agreeing to participate. She doesn’t want one of her friends to suffer he fate and end up being called weak, accused of cheating and having no moral principles whatsoever.>

Sep-03-10  midi900: I'm no great authority in the world team but I see that PZ has been removed from the roster. I think the game can continue now but since a lot of damage has been done to the spirit and organization of the team I would ask for a n extension of 1 day for the World team on this move. Otherwise it seems very hard to present a united and strong challenge.
Sep-03-10  LIFE Master AJ: The website for the first, great American Chess Tournament. (Cambridge Springs, 1904.)

A nice article on CS 1904 by my friend, Bill Wall.
http://www.chess.com/article/view/c...

WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE ... to create a page for this tournament? (Many other tournaments have their own page.)

Sep-03-10  zarg: <Hesam7: My worry is that Peter (btw you should read his most recent post) would create them in order to defeat the 0-1 protest move.>

This is very sad, are you trying to gather a lunch mob to hang <Peter Zhdanov>?

You may accuse Mr. Zhdanov for having an interest conflict, being arrogant, provocative, supportive of his wife, for defending her honor against "disrespectful" members, but <not> for intentionally planning on cheating or rigging some vote.

IMO, as an anonymous, to make public suspicions/accusations of cheat/vote rigging by Mr. Zhdanov, is just as bad as being a cheat.

Mr. Zhdanov is no fool, and if he indeed is an IT specialist, he knows perfectly well what other specialists can do. No point in taking huge risk getting caught, if there is little gain.

Hence, if there has been sock puppet accounts created for this vote, the most likely sinners by far, will be other members of the World team. Being afraid of Mr. Zhdanov doing such a thing, is ridiculous and paranoid.

However, I sadly changed my vote to 0-1 yesterday, as the atmosphere for having a fun game was no longer in place. I still fully trust Mr. Zhdanov and WGM Pogonina to give a fair and good challenge, but out of respect for fellow members taking this CC game far more serious than myself, there was only one option really.

However, Mr. Zhdanov has not exactly helped matters by his posts. :)

SwitchingQuylthulg: <chessgames.com: <1> First, our rule #3 "No personal attacks against other users." is as always in effect. Peter and Natalia are both members and we will not tolerate name-calling or childish offenses directed at them. We have deleted a few posts which employed blatant name calling.>

So I guess posts like this do not violate that rule?

<Peter Zhdanov: So far there have been just a few emotional outbreaks. IMHO those are connected with general psychological instability. For instance, <acirce> went from insulting me and Natalia in every message posted from asking me about advice on how to defeat the "weak" player whom he was going to "beat easily" before announcing his "retirement".>

The Chessgames Challenges is the result of a good deal of money, time and effort to procure a 100% free gift of chess for internet users. Under these unusual circumstances, if said users decided to refuse the gift, we would understand their decision and not be hurt by it.

However, the right thing to do is to find out if they want to refuse it. Normally this may be very hard to do, but luckily we had a 100% democratic process, implemented by software, to learn exactly that. The people have spoken, and they have decided by a carefully monitored voting process to continue the game. You are not obligated to play, but you have no right to tell other people that they must forfeit our gift to them.

chessgames.com: <So I guess posts like this do not violate that rule?> I don't think so, but you're welcome to blow the whistle on it and find out.

Mind you, we can't enforce "rudeness" per se, that is too abstract of a concept to prohibit. In a perfect world, nobody would be rude, but it's not our job to try to make that possible. Name-calling on the other hand is crystal clear. If there's any line to be drawn, that's it.

Sorry, request denied.

Remember: the world outnumbers its opponent perhaps 800 to 1. On the worst possible day, "when the spirit of the world is damaged" as you say, perhaps she is only being outnumbered 50 to 1. If that's not good enough to beat her, then she deserves to win.

chessgames.com: <LMAJ> <WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE ... to create a page for this tournament? (Many other tournaments have their own page.)> It is definitely possible--in fact it's a glorious idea--but it's a longterm goal. We hope to have a vast collection of classic tournaments presented in some sort of logical system to flip through them like a rolodex.

Understand, the PGN from old games is often very poor. It's far easier to collect modern tournaments where we can count on conveniences like "round numbers" to appear in the PGN. But nevertheless we do have a solution to that problem, namely borrow data already in the Game Collection Search feature. Look for this in 2011.

Sep-03-10  technical draw: <chessgames> Want to create interest in the challenge game? Just set up betting in the chessbookie for Pogonina's moves. I for one will bet.
Sep-03-10  acirce: <chessgames.com>

Thanks for handling this mess the best that you could.

I don't think you've acted completely flawlessly, but I don't envy you and I certainly wouldn't have done better in this situation...

This is still the greatest chess site out there, despite what I still consider a fiasco.

Sep-03-10  whatthefat: I'd like to second <acirce>'s sentiments. I recognize that you've had a hell of a mess to deal with, and I'm sure you're as sorry as we are that the until now impeccable World challenge series has finally hit a serious hiccup. Thanks for your efforts in trying to salvage the situation.
Sep-03-10  notyetagm: <CG.COM> Gee, after all this drama, I have a simple request: could you please create a forum for the ongoing <2010 RUSSIAN HIGHER LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP>?

Thanks

  Annie K.: <notyetagm> No. That's too easy. ;)

<cg.com> kudos from me too.

Sep-03-10  Hesam7: Just a reminder you promised to make a page for the Leko - Gelfand match!
Sep-03-10  twinlark: Ceegee:

I'd like to second the sentiments expressed by acirce, whatthefat and Annie K.

The drama that has engulfed this Challenge could have happened at any time, but it happened now. In the circumstances, you handled it as well as could have been managed, and I'm sure you have a few ideas on how to make the next Challenge more ship shape.

I was hoping for the Team to terminate the game, but democracy has spoken, and the yes vote won. I respect that, even if I dislike the outcome (bit like the recent Aussie elections!), and I respect your actions.

This site is still easily the best chess site on the net, and I'm sure it will remain so.

Keep up the good work!

Sep-04-10  Hesam7: I nominate I Zaitsev vs Benko, 1974 as a candidate for game of the day. Benko is Black and plays the Benko gambit, Zaitsev in turn responds with a line that bears his name (the Zaitsev variation of Benko!).
Sep-04-10  melianis: what <acirce> said. considered requesting discontinuing this account, instead decided to try creating a second account, which was easy enough. This I may be using after the CG challenge (rather PZ challenge) game. Suggesting remaining team members' to start an anyzing site elsewhere in the web. I do not want the assumed team members to be undermining the efforts of making a good game.
Sep-04-10  bharatiy: <chessgames.com> I dont pay to use your services to begin with.Still I would like to comment few things. Like others I understand your difficult situation, but for some reasons it seemed that you were interested in continuation of this game for reasons other than what "world team" felt. May be there was good money involved as you suggested and then its understandable that you wanted this to end peacefully. I am sure when you had contract with Natalia you have dealt with her husband who is her manager and that made him interested party. Then you could have removed him from world team using your administrative rights for the website, which I believe you tried but he re-registred for it. You should have removed him after that. Anyway as a member I had the right to ask you to cancel this game, and you have the right to refuse it. Sorry for this long post. Enjoy! -) Last but imp. thanks a lot for this website!!
Sep-04-10  SugarDom: Thank you folks. It's not over yet and the game can become one of the best challenges...
Sep-04-10  hms123: <chessgames.com> The kibitzing page still shows the World Game comments even if you are not registered for the game.

See the website, http://home.roadrunner.com/~etzel/c.... Steve Etzel might be willing to do the page for you ... (He is also a user on this site. User: CambridgeSprings1904.) We are good friends, if you are curious, then I would be happy to contact him for you.

While I have your attention, the game, Pillsbury vs Lasker, 1904, has the WRONG SCORE ... Steve and I have been trying to get this corrected for YEARS!!! (Black played 18...Qb5; in that game, NOT the 18...Qb4 that you give.) You can read the kibitzes on the page, if you need convincing. <chancho> quotes a book that confirms the game score is wrong.

chessgames.com: <acirce> et al: "fiasco" is a strong word--we prefer to think of it as a "debacle" ;-)

There is more to this event that meets the eye. We have not been fully open regarding all of the happenings that transpired over the past few days, with good reason. First, we don't want to make our guest GM nor her manager look bad. If they do that on their own we can't stop them, but we don't want to go out of our way to argue our position if that would require us showing them in a bad light. Moreover we respect the privacy of emails with them and have to regard the behind-the-scenes happenings as confidential.

We can say this: every step of the way we did what seemed to be the only course of action. We will also say, that when 0-1 was rising in the voting, we were hoping very strongly that it would succeed unless Peter volunteered to correct the situation. We were faced with an unfair ultimatum and in spite of our protests, Peter didn't budge. But then the tables turned and YOU (the chessgames voters) presented Peter with an ultimatum of your own. We are so proud of that effort, that is the event that saved the game, not Daniel's hamfisted plea posted on Natalia's page.

We really thank everybody who stayed level headed throughout the affair, and we hope that now we will be treated to one of the most interesting Chessgames Challenges ever.
