Phony Benoni: <WannaBe>'s 16 Across thing was a six-letter crossword clue meaning <"Chessgames.com notable">. The answer was one of the following; care to guess?

1) acirce
2) Caissa
3) duffer
4) Karpov
5) Lasker
6) master
7) patzer
8) tpstar

No, it was not <Keeene>.

chessgames.com: The answer ought to be either "acirce" or "tpstar", but since it's a crossword puzzle intended for the general public I have to guess the answer was "Karpov".

Annie K.: <cg.com: <It gets a little tricky because not every browser allows for audio embedding in the same way.>>

I'm sure "a little tricky" is a nicely understated way of putting it. ;)

It might be interesting to compare how other sites with the audio feature deal with it. For instance, Wikipedia's audio feature doesn't work for me (usually on Opera), but the one at dictionary.com does.

<Another issue is that your *.m4a files might not be the best choice--we may have to convert them into more traditional mp3 files for maximum compatibility.>

I suppose I - or anybody else who wants to contribute to the audio project - can download an mp3 converter, if that's best. Or just submit audio files to you and you'll convert them?

<We are still very keen on the idea though and look forward to seeing it implemented.>

Very glad to hear that. :) I've been thinking lately also about a possibility of automating the feature, based on the audio at Google Translate, which really isn't half bad with pronouncing names if it knows what language it's supposed to match (and if Google Translate covers that language). The players have their nationalities entered... so maybe, if Google is willing to allow their translator to be embedded, maybe the program could read the player's nationality from the appropriate entry, and match the pronunciation of their name to it?

I'm still liking the idea of incorporating member input here, mind you, but I'm thinking that such uploads would probably add up to only a small fraction of the total of players in the database - that's why an automatically generated audio might be great for the bulk of the players, and members could still upload files for players that they think would be of higher quality than the program's.

WannaBe: I first tried 'Benoni' but it didn't work with the other clues, and then I tried 'WannaBe' only to realize it had one too many letter.

p.s. the answer turned out to be Karpov. =)

Mar-17-11  Lennonfan: <cg.com staff and admins>...i dont really want to bother you,im sure you've got much more important things to be doing, but i would like an answer to my question......recently you've deleted a bunch of my posts when none were in violation of your rules, yet the user who i was asking a question to constantly breaks every rule posted and yet he's still allowed to dictate to you which posts he wants to remain standing and which he wants removed from his games,or any others for that matter...how and why is this possible??? From what i can see this user has been nothing but trouble from the day he joined about 8yrs ago,and sometimes i even wander if he's allowed to deliberately antagonise people, because any other user would surely have been banned from this site by now!!in future if you delete any of my posts could you please tell me why? All the best

chessgames.com: Lennonfan, you say that none of your posts where in violation of our rules, but the fact is that they elicited complaints from other members (plural) and our admins agreed that they should be deleted. For example the post that begun <COULD YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE CHESS POSITION PROBLEM I PUT UP ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE IS DOING ON YOUR WEBSITE ...> violated several rules simultaneously.
Mar-17-11  technical draw: <example the post that begun>

Hmmm, should be "that began". Begun occurs after the verb have.

signed TD, former CIA analyst. (hello Dom)....

Mar-17-11  Lennonfan: <cg.com staff and admins>Well i dont want to get into no flame war with yourselves or goldsby,so i wont re post several of his "offensive rule breaking posts" in the hope they're deleted....because i know full well they wont be! All i want is an acknowledgement from him himself, regarding the questions i asked him in that particular post...and i can guess who the <plural>are...only a coward hides in the shadows is all i can say on that....

chessgames.com: Here's a very crude way to implement embedded audio, yet it works on most machines we have in the office without much fuss:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

(Note the little speaker icon next to his name in the biography.)

On MSIE and some other browsers there is a small wrinkle that the browser asks for "permission to run a plug-in" or some such thing. That's a nuisance, but not a show-stopper. There is also a technique which sidesteps that feature, although the argument can be made that one ought to not intentionally sidestep security measures.

Surely some people will have difficulty playing that embedded audio clip. We'd like to hear from them, and then we'll try to insert an mp3 file instead and see if that makes a difference.

Mar-17-11  hms123: <chessgames.com> I use Google Chrome as a browser. when I clicked on the speaker I got this window; http://www.chessgames.com/perl/audi...

but no sound.

Mar-17-11  NakoSonorense: I have very slow internet, so it took over 10 seconds for the window to pop and play the file (the first time), whereas I can play audio almost instantly at www.thefreedictionary.com

If you want to play the sound again, I think it would be more user-friendly if you didn't have to go back to the main window and click again. In other words, I dislike the pop-up window. Just saying...

<hms123> I forgot to thank you for directing me to that post with the search kibitizing tips. So, thanks!

Mar-17-11  crawfb5: The audio clip worked for me on several browsers. My main browser is Firefox 3.6. It also worked on a very old Internet Explorer (6.0) and a new Safari (5.0). The audio part also worked on another I had test-driven for a while, but the player name did not appear in the pop-up window as with the other browsers (Avant version 2010, build 2). Perhaps that was a font issue, but the sound and load/play speed seemed identical in all browsers I tested.
Mar-17-11  crawfb5: Howard, when I click on your link, I get a full screen window of <Vasily Smyslov> *and* I get the audio. Is there something funky with your audio?
Mar-18-11  hms123: <crawfb5> I just tried it from home and it works fine. I get the window and the sound. I don't know what the issue is with my computer at work. I think the set-ups are the same.

At home, though, I also got a pop-up asking me about updating Quicktime. Maybe I don't have that on my other computer. It is not the end of the world--I just thought the cg folks would like the feedback.

Annie K.: <cg.com> nice start on the audio! :)

The thing works - although it loads a bit slowly - on all my main browsers (latest versions, running on Win XP): Opera, Safari, Chrome, and FireFox. It also works on IE8.

Sounds good. ;)

(Of course, I do have QuickTime installed...)

Ironically, it does not seem to work on my IPhone; the pop-up loads, as a new browser page, but there's no sound. The IPhone *can* run m4a files - I reckon the problem is somewhere in the pop-up-ness of the solution.

Mar-18-11  Thanh Phan: <chessgames.com> The vocal of name works here, vista with chrome I think.

Also wish offer thanks for picture for <Lê Quang Liêm> picture for his Profile :) Take care~

Mar-18-11  rapidcitychess: <Penguincw> I think your problem is that you haven't set under your preferences: "NO ADS" Do that, and they should disappear.
Mar-19-11  hms123: <Annie> It turns out that if I install QuickTime then I get to hear the pronunciation. Who'd a thunk it?....You!

Mar-19-11  Lennonfan: <CHESSGAMES.COM STAFF> You've just deleted a post of mine, yet again, yet with this post i was very careful not to violate ANY rule laid down by yourselves....could you please tell me exactly what was wrong that it was deleted so quickly?? Please? Is it because goldsby and his friends(plural)are premium members and as yet im not?? Is it any wander im not, when even though i violated no rules you censor my freedom of speech and jump when certain members,(i can guess who!)who i dont get on with, complain at every single thing i post...i dont want to start blowing the whistle at these members posts i dont agree with,as im not a coward and if i have anything to say il word my criticism correctly and address them personally...in fact il pay for their premium membership if you let me spk as long as i dont break no rules...thats fair is it not?? Now plz tell me why you deleted my last post??
All the best

tpstar: <Lennonfan> They do not want posters using this forum to air grievances and mediate disputes. Questions about posts being deleted should go to them privately using the "contact us" prompt at the bottom.

The specific behavioral patterns that get on your nerves have been common knowledge since 2004. If you cannot cohabitate with <AJ> then put him on ignore, forget about him, and get off it.
