Annie K.: <hms> yep, it helps to have a program on one's computer that finds the file type in question vaguely familiar. ;)

<cg.com> a bit more on the audio... :) I hope your eventual setup won't involve a pop-up window, that's usually a turn-off for a feature. I agree about not intentionally sidestepping security measures, though; for instance, there might be a - purely hypothetical, I'm sure ;) - group of members who access the site from work, and may not appreciate an accidental click causing a feature to loudly announce 'Boris Spassky' (for example) just when their boss is passing by. ;p

But I think that either a profile setting and/or a one-time request for permission to play audio, to be stored in the site cookie, would be the way to go on that. With that out of the way, and QuickTime installed, pressing the icon should just simply play the sound?

Annie K.: On second thought... cookie is definitely the way to go. That way, people can enable the audio at home, and disable it from work/library etc., if they access the site from more than one place.
Mar-19-11  Lennonfan: <tpstar>...its not "cohabiting" with goldsby thats the problem...the point is that whenever i confront him with facts,my posts are deleted leaving his standing! Im sure you yourself have had problems with this man in the past,as it seems every other user has(even FSR and JFQ.....and possibly JFK and MLF?)so you must understand why im annoyed...my only problem is with goldsby, not any other user,so when i post something on his page or game, addressing him,and him only and im violating no rules,it gets annoying when other users who have had many problems with this man in the past themselves interfere....if i didn't interfere when they had problems with goldsby,id be grateful if they didnt get involved when i have a problem with him....and i dont mean you personally, you've been very helpful with me recently and i really appreciate that,so surely you can see my point of view?? And as for certain other members if they dont want to read what i have to say they can place me on ignore...that doesn't bother me at all.

tpstar: <Lennonfan> I have followed the whole thing. You are wasting your time.

Put him on ignore and move on.

Mar-19-11  Lennonfan: <tpstar>iv got respect for u as a chess player, and uv been fair with me,so il try take ur advice regarding goldsby on board...but you know full well within a day or two someone(the ppl who interfere and complain to the admins who hide in the shadows!)will say something else, and that will just make me want to prove myself even more!!I do realise goldsby wouldn't admit to a murder even if he was found standing over a body, holding a large knife dripping with the victims blood, screaming"i killed the b*%$&@d i did it,it was me".! He'd still come out with some excuse saying it wasn't him once the court proceedings began!!!The mans just a pain in the backside, toward everyone as far as i can see?? Anyway,on a chess note...if i post a recent game up now, will you give me some tips and advice again?? Iv been through a lot of my games for GM keene, one of which is being published in his times column on april 9th(thanks GM keene),so iv found some good games....il post one in the cafe..its mine (kp off AJ...lol)..will you??

tpstar: <the mans just a pain> We all have good and bad features.

<post a recent game> Sure! The purpose of this site is to participate and learn from players stronger than yourself, while guiding those who are weaker. Just like it says in the Wikipedia entry. ;>D

Spend your time here improving, not fighting. =)

Mar-19-11  Lennonfan: <tpstar>....thank you so much...give me half hour il post a game up at the cafe(im on my phone!)and any analysis from you will be much appreciated...(see,this is why id rather come to this site!....i dont wanna argue, but my tempers short with ppl like AJ...I really honestly appreciate anything you have to say regarding chess whether it be good or bad.....thank you once again, and one more thing....after this game plz give me an ER,as im dying to challenge my nemesis....win or lose!! Just kidding...il post now thanks <tpstar>
Mar-20-11  LIFE Master AJ: You deleted my game with player Bryan Tillis.

Any particular reason?

Mar-20-11  LIFE Master AJ: Tillis is a 2100 - he drew me and defeated Emory Tate at the Dothan Open in December, 2011.

You can find the crosstable on the USCF website. (http://www.uschess.org/images/splas...)

I guess the game somehow violated some guideline? Was it something else? Please inform.

Mar-20-11  LIFE Master AJ: And if a player does not have any games in the database, does it make sense to to keep his "player page" up?

Tabanus: Hi chessgames, why so many games from year 2001? I used the Advanced Search function:

1999: 13329 games
2000: 16672 games
2001: <over 60000>
2002: 13550 games
2003: 13391 games
2004: 15887 games
2005: 25005 games
---
2009: 22640 games
2010: 24240 games

I'll try to make a complete list, in order to track how many games are added each year ;)

Btw, for 2010 chesslive has 122385 games with at least one of the players rated > 2200, and 13157 games with at least one player rated > 2600. All in all they have 250000 games for 2010 (of which 3687 games with both players > 2600).

Because of the player pages it's fine that you also add games by low rated players. What worries me a little is the number of GM games added each year - I believe less than one third of the ones played, but hard for me to calculate.

chessgames.com: <AnnieK> <I hope your eventual setup won't involve a pop-up window> I know what you mean, we hope it won't either, but it's better to have a pop-up window than a link directly to an mp3/m4a file. Links directly to the files will sometimes trigger a plug-in but for many other users they will prompt the user to save the file to the hard-drive. That's extremely undesirable. The biggest problem with pop-ups in our opinion is that many people enable the feature "block pup-up windows". We studied www.dictionary.com and found they've a great way to play audio: they use a flash program. That way the user doesn't need any specific audio plug-in, just the flash plug-in which virtually everybody has. The dictionary.com flash program shows up as a tiny little speaker icon, and when you click the speaker, the sound plays. We believe their flash is proprietary, but after some research we found other free flash plugins for that purpose. Unfortunately the ones we reviewed were massively bloated, in fact most of them are designed to play videos and to turn them into audio players you have to set the "screen size" to 1x1 pixels. So the saga continues...

<Penguincw> The "No sidebar banners" does not effect every single ad on the site, just most of them. The live Amber script is one of those exceptions.

<Tabanus: Hi chessgames, why so many games from year 2001? > There is a story behind that. When Chessgames first started we imported about 250,000 games and then wrote a script to import every single new game from The Week in Chess. After about a year of doing that we realized that TWIC simply provided us with more volume than we deemed desirable, including things like U12 tournaments. We wrote a program to cull out the obviously undesirable games from 2001 but thousands still remain. And so, 2001 is overrepresented in our database.

<Lennonfan>: If we get a complaint about a post that's IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS WITH MULTIPLE EXCLAMATION POINTS (!!!!!) the admins are likely to delete it without even reading its contents, especially given the backdrop of this flame war that they already know about. <tpstar> couldn't have summarized it better: drop it and move on. Understand that nobody really cares about this feud you are having with Goldsby. Your very last post on the subject seemed to be a good summary of this issue, and not egregiously in violation of our rules, so we moved it to the Kibitzer's Cafe. We moved Goldby's rebuttal there too. If anybody cares (which we doubt) those posts can remain there as a record of the dispute.

Mar-21-11  Open Defence: heh! thank God I wasnt holding my breath! :)
Mar-21-11  Waitaka: Dear cg.com,

I think there is a bug with the search engine, at least for my user.

Everytime I search for the string "Waitaka", none of the more recent posts appear, and the first results page has only one item.

I think it happened after I deleted a post on a game forum, very close to the 1 hour limit.

Thanks in advance,

Waitaka

Mar-21-11  Waitaka: Or maybe the search results now do not include the posts on the Team Challange? If it is so, then the posts are removed from the result list AFTER breaking the results into pages, and I believe it should be removed before the paging process.

chessgames.com: <Waitaka> It does this weird thing where it makes a page of so-many results then it strips out any posts that you shouldn't be able to see (i.e. Chessgames Challenge posts). That may create a situation where a page has only 1 or 2 posts like I see now. If it got into a situation with zero posts I'm not sure what it would do.

<Open Defence> Our apologies, your previous email was received and appreciated. Daniel will send you an email today.

kutztown46: I have run into the same problem that <Waitaka> mentions. The issue is apparently that Chessgames Challenge posts are off limits to the search kibitzing feature. After all, we would not want someone on one team searching the posts of someone on the other team.

However, this can be a real pain. It would be nice if the search kibitzing feature would allow you to search the posts of someone on the same team, or at least allow you to search for your own posts.

Mar-21-11  Waitaka: Just to note that the restrction applies only to the team challange, not to the gm challange.
Mar-21-11  Lennonfan: <cg.com>...your probably right,no one cares about "my flame war" with goldsby But i dont know what wording a post with ALL CAPITAL LETTERS WITH MULTIPLE EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!! should be deleted for?? why would the admins delete it without even reading it??? For all they know i could be proving einstein theory's wrong!!! Although this is very doubtful, somebody is indeed interested in my flame war with goldsby......user <bartonlaos> seems very keen to know the truth!!! Anyways....IL REMEMBER THAT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE!!!!! ALL THE BEST..
LENNONFAN!!! LOL...;-)

Annie K.: <cg.com> thanks for the explanation and update on the audio project! :)
Mar-21-11  Lennonfan: <Cg.com..admins and staff>.......why was my post from the goldsby/steger game removed??? This is getting as annoying for me as it probably is for you now,so seeing as i again violated no rules.....please answer??? And please dont tell me you removed it because goldsby asked you....im now starting to think he has photo's of you all in compromising positions!! I have no desire to start a flame war with him(nor you)you know full well he's a simpleton, and iv addressed and finished the debate regarding"AJ'S SITE PROBLEM"i think anyway??..so whats up now?? If i constantly "blow the whistle"on posts i dont agree with will they be removed because iv got a long long list?! <JQ> <ANNIE K><GOLDSBY> <FSR>are users who's posts i could re post for you,to name but four users here(there's a few more who's posts i find offensive too,are you going to do something about them if i do re post them for you?? NO..i wander why?? If $20 a yr talks,il give you 40...will you get rid of all their posts for me then? Seriously...il pay?
Mar-22-11  LIFE Master AJ: I sent you an e-mail about the Tillis game ... I really would like to know why it was deleted.
