| Apr-05-11 | | twinlark: Hi ceegee
On a technical note, I notice that <all> the kibitzing on the games pages of the Chinese Championships disappeared during the day, including some significant swathes of analysis. Would you be able to retrieve them? I don't recall any of them being problematic. |

 | | chessgames.com: <I play the Fred: Is there a way to withdraw any submitted puns? I've looked my submission list over and some of them are really stupid.> No, sorry--but we do have a mechanism in place to delete puns that have received very low voting scores. <Benzol> Those games went in without trouble, thanks. <DrNyet: As I understand it, the Kenneth Rogoff forum is designated by Chessgames for those who like political discussion.> It would be more accurate to say it is designated by Chessgames members for political discussion. We never intended it to be anything more than a discussion page for GM Rogoff. <Are there other pages that one should be aware of to help one stay abreast of events?> You just have to ask around ;-) <Penguincw:...I am on Team White, but it says that I'm not on Team White.> Thanks for pointing that out; the software had an output error. It should say "You are not on Team Black" and I believe we have it fixed. Note that the Chessgames Challenge Bot posts to both threads, so even though you can read the nearly identical post on the White thread, the page links to the most recent post on the Black thread which you can't read. <Phony Benoni: There have been a lot of faulty scores appearing> We cleaned up most of those problems. |

 | | chessgames.com: A number of recent games, mostly from the Chinese Championships, were deleted and reimported. This erased some kibitzing and might have removed some games from Game Collections. We apologize for this. |

| Apr-05-11 | | twinlark: Can't you retrieve them? There was a lot of work in some of them. |

<I'm sorry>
Really? You have me angry for the first time.
Just as the kibitzers in this place have to abide by your 4 guidelines, so there is one guideline you guys need to remember first and foremost, namely that <bona fide kibitzers are the lifeblood of your business>. Treat them carelessly and recklessly at your risk, because if you do they might simply go elsewhere. My confidence in your bona fides is severely shaken. |

 | | chessgames.com: <twinlark> There was a very serious database problem and we had to revert to a backup to restore the game table. We do in fact have a backup of the kibitzing, but to use it would require a fairly large impromptu project. You see the game numbers for these games have changed, so to restore the kibitzing it would be necessary to reconcile the old game #'s with the new ones. This is not an impossibly difficult task but it's unclear how much work will be required or when we'd be able to accomplish it. We certainly want to repair things to be mostly like they were before, but as it's unclear right now if we will be able to do this, or how long it will take, we can't make any promises. Once again we apologize--and please believe that it really kills us to see a loss like this and we do not take it lightly. |

Sometimes people remove a foot from their mouth only to shove the other down their throat. First you essentially declare you can't reinstate the kibitzes - not once but twice - and then you come back and say you can reinstate them but it may not be worth the effort. I'm underwhelmed by this attitude, not to mention the contradiction between the two positions. Also underwhelming is the lack of care exercised in your games purge-and-replace exercise. The loss of kibitzes from these games sites was not a technical problem, it was basic carelessness which you still haven't acknowledged. The fact is that the game pages from the Chinese Championship had relatively few kibitzes and wouldn't have taken more than a few minutes to safeguard. Heck, I - or quite a few others around here that would love to help out - could have done that for you if you'd given me/them administrative access to do so, and done so free of charge; having read all the comments in those pages, I know how many there were and that it would have been a minor project. It's not the loss of the kibitizes per se that irks the most, as I for one certainly have no illusions about how precious my offerings may be, regardless of how much effort I spend on them. It's your carelessness in losing them, and the seemingly cavalier attitude that feeds that carelessness, that rankles. I don't want to leave as I've invested huge time and effort in this place, and it's easily the best place I've found on the web, but the thought of putting any more significant effort into kibitzing and updating bios has ceased to appeal to me, at least for the time being. |

 | | Domdaniel: I hope this database problem isn't Chinese cyber-war. Somebody had mentioned a dissident or two. And I really hope that LennonFan isn't a Chinese plant. If they're that far ahead of us in the art of nuisance bots, we're doomed. Hi, Annie. Yo, twinlark. Amazing, innit, how many of the old regulars have been talking about moving on from this place? My feeling was that it had become contaminated, but not totally Fukushima ... yet. |

G'day. I was going to mention the considerable amount of disaffection amongst long standing members I'd noticed in recent months, but deleted mention of it from my draft post as I didn't feel like I had the right to speak for others. |

 | | chessgames.com: twinlark, the database did indeed suffer a technical problem: a table was corrupted. In our efforts to fix the problem, a moment of panic might have made the situation worse than it already was--so yes, as is typical in these kinds of situations there was a human error. The original cause of the corruption might also have been due to a human error, although that's unclear. When we initially said that we could not restore the messages that was a true summary of the situation. The more detailed version is that the messages do in fact exist in a backup archive, but are unable to be properly linked to the games in question. Believe me, I really want to restore the missing posts. |
|
| Apr-05-11 | | twinlark: <a moment of panic might have made the situation worse than it already was> You mean not safeguarding the kibitzes? I'd noticed.
Anyone could have copied all the posts even without admin access and then resupplied them to you, tagged with the games - complete with original game numbers. A trivial job. So I don't believe that the database corruption you speak of made the conservation of kibitzes impossible. You're still dodging and weaving, not to mention obfuscating, and that's starting to irk more than what's gone before. Logging off now, and considering if and when I return. |

 | | chessgames.com: Some good news, we've been able to replace a small number of kibitzes at this game page: Yifan Hou vs Y Yu, 2011 We'll be able to bring back still more with some effort. |

|
| Apr-07-11 | | Shams: <twinlark> Go easy on the admins, man, it's not like this happens frequently. |
|
| Apr-07-11 | | Caissanist: The admins are obviously overwhelmed with administrative work of all kinds, most of it non-technical. Hopefully we will eventually see features that enable us to do much of the non-techie work ourselves, freeing them to concentrate on the tough stuff. |

 | | WannaBe: Yes, agreed <Caissanist>, once <Benzol> stop uploading 125 gazillion-million of games, we can go back to more serious matters! <Benzol> Just pulling your leg, mate. |

| Apr-07-11 | | twinlark: <ceegee> Thanks for making the effort to retrieve some missing kibitzes. |
