Seriously, this stuff has to stop. Rule #2, "no duplicating posts" covers this kind of thing. We know it's all harmless and good natured, but it's not for Chessgames. |

 | | chessgames.com: Don't pop open the champagne quite yet, but if my hunch is right, we just fixed a bug that's been annoying us for the past 8 years. The bug has to do with people who use "pointies" <...> to change color, and also include links inside their coloration. Most of the time it works, but if you really stretch it and squeeze URLs inside pointies without any breathing room, the bug kicks in. If you look at this post by "HeMateMe" you can see the bug in action: Kibitzer's Café. The telltale symptom is the mysterious colored semi-colon that is exactly where you would expect to see a closed-pointy. Then when you click on the link you get an extraneous %3E at the end of the URL which usually breaks the link. The workaround was to put a spaces around your URLs, but happily that workaround should now be obsolete as it will work even without padding it with extra spaces. Now if I want to put a link inside pointies I can do it directly. The software assumes that no link is going to end in ">", which is a fair assumption. Let's try it first with a tiny URL:
<http://tinyurl.com/2g9mqh> So far, so good. Now let's try a longer URL that will get clipped off: <http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...> Excellent! If you notice any problems related to this let us know. |

 | | chessgames.com: <BobCrisp: Don't know if this is a common bug, but N1f3 shows up as separate moves here...> If a knight is incapable of being disambiguated by a letter then it happens like clockwork. How often is that? Eh, once in a blue moon, but it happens. We've known about that wrinkle for years, and the reason why we don't fix it is because really the entire "similar games" feature needs to be rewritten to take the Opening Explorer data into account. As things stand, it uses a different and more primitive technique. The new technique would really find the similar games, with great accuracy when it comes to transpositions. It's not that hard to implement. In fact, savvy chessgames members already know how to do it by hand. My job would just be to automatically fill-in a form so they would stop needing to copy-and-paste. For example, if you want to find similar games to that Deep Blue game, just go to Opening Explorer Move Lookup and then copy-and-paste the first few moves, say <1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nd7 5.Ng5 Ngf6 6.Bd3 e6 7.N1f3 h6 8.Nxe6> into the form. You end up with a page like this Opening Explorer page that will show you similar games. Cool as that method is, it will be obsolete soon, for we have a much improved version in on the workbench: a hybrid between the old method and the Opening Explorer method. |

| Aug-02-11 | | Blunderdome: I could go for a forum for the Women's Event in Rostov. <http://rostov2011.fide.com/index.php> ;) I expect PGNs will be available in all the usual places -- TWIC is broadcasting the games. Thanks! |

 | | Domdaniel: First the hi-bro *Fist of Furry* and now a pointy-head cascade. If you wanna play with links, take up seaside golf.
Anyhow, they're <angle <or elbow> brackets>. Don't, please, throw out all the old workarounds in the utopian rush to implement new stuff. Some folk treasure their savviness, like their neuroses and addictions. |

| Aug-03-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: Please take a look at the page ... A J Goldsby vs K Crisler, 2009. (Some commnets are completely inappropriate ... for any site that is supposed to be for chess fans of all ages.) I would have to say that a few of these comments are just dead wrong. My suggestion would be to temporarily mute/muzzle those offenders. When people like <jw> or <lennonfan> get nasty, they seem to be willing to ignore any guidelines and get as nasty as possible. Time for action! |

| Aug-03-11 | | Blunderdome: Great newsletter this quarter. Really enjoyed endgame study and the word search. I spent a long time thinking I could use a knight's move to spell out one of the names... |

 | | chessgames.com: <LIFE Master AJ> I cannot deny that this page has become a circus, and I also see that you have dutifully submitted separate whistle complaints on specific posts, but it hasn't even been 10 hours since those whistles were submitted. I don't see what makes these particular posts so extreme that it warrants petitioning us here for immediate action. Having said all that, it seems to me that 90% of the hullaballoo there is the fact that you played a relatively recent game in what's marked as a "Junior" tournament. I still do not understand the resolution to that inconsistency and apparently I'm not alone. We were somewhat expecting to see a correction slip come in one of these days explaining that the "1st Annual Jr. Chess Class Champ. 2009" is not actually the name of the tournament, and then suggest an improvement. As it stands is an invitation for disaster, and if nothing else, the pedants will be perpetually reminding us that there's no such thing as a "1st annual." |

I have no control over what the organizer called it. (I personally thought the name was dumb - the same organizer called one of his events "Chocolate Milk.") The event was supposed to be an annual one, however, the organizer (K. Olson) is now banned for life in AL (his home state) and there are other problems pending as well. (I won't go into this matter any deeper than I already have.) |
