 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <chessgames.com: You make it sound like the normal move is begin penalized in these rare cases. That sounds like a bug. I as well hope it's got nothing to do with knight disambiguation.> It does, though, doesn't it? And not just knights, but other pieces as well. And not just openings, but middlegames too... By the way, how's Jasper doing? We haven't heard an update in years! |

 | | chessgames.com: There are some funny things on that old report. We probably should take it offline, I shudder to think what information might be encoded in some of those ancient email URLs. Who would have guess we'd get *three* searches for <MAGNUS CARLSEN GIRLFRIEND> ? About the potential Guess-the-Move bug, we'll examine GTM games from this list http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... and see if we can replicate the problem. Part of the problem is this: we discovered that 99% of the time, when somebody gets penalized for "moving the wrong knight", it is really just confusion over notational conventions. So the software was intentionally made excessively forgiving with disambiguation mistakes. But that's just knights--rooks are a totally different story. The "case of the wrong rook" is a well known chess dilemma. To add to the confusion there are two methods of move entry (typing and mouse-clicking) and they can be interpreted in different ways. In summary the software probably should be quite a bit more strict when it comes to moves like that; that line in the Ruy is as good as any for analyzing this problem. |

I strongly recommend you do something about this before it's too late: From Benzol:
<I don't know if it's just me but I'm becoming increasingly disturbed and saddened at the apparent deterioration of behaviour of some of the members at this website. One member has been driven off his own game page and it looks like another could follow suit very shortly. The bigotry shown on the former is most distasteful and I can't read most of it.There is constant bickering over a vast array of gamepages of another member. I've seen children act in a more responsible manner than what has been shown there. The Fischer thread seems to be getting crazier. I didn't think that was possible but it appears so. I have invested a great deal of time and effort over a number of years into this database and website ( nearly 4000 uploads of games and whole tournaments says so ), but I'm giving very serious thought to jacking-in my membership because of what has been transpiring recently. There have been differences of opinions between members before but nothing like the events described above. If you've made it this far or even care, thankyou for your attention.> In addition, the Tagalog bandits (a minority- most of the Pilipino members are not involved in this) have escaped from the Wesley So page, since they've ruined their own home- Wesley has abandoned them (and his OWN FREAKING PAGE ON YOUR SITE). They have taken to spamming the Tournament pages with all manner of argumentative and frequently obscene @#$%*&!#. I strongly recommend you do something about this before your website gets a reputation as a JOKE. When prominent Grandmasters leave your site, doesn't that send you an alarm? Are you aware that many of these Tagalog Bandits are regularly posting obscene comments in Tagalog, brazen in the knowledge that you can't understand them? If I started posting obscene filth in French all over your website, how long do you think that would last before you shut me down? Are you afraid to do something decisive about this because you are afraid to be considered a racist? Nobody in their right mind would ever think that of you, on or off this site. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS.
Your website is going down the toilet- fast.
Please do something.
Here is a <Tagalog/English> translator. I suggest you do some WORK on this or hire someone to do this WORK because it's necessary ok? http://freetranslation.imtranslator... JFQ |

 | | chessgames.com: <JFQ> <They have taken to spamming the Tournament pages with all manner of argumentative and frequently obscene @#$%*&!#.> We take such alarms seriously, but when I go to tournament pages like 4th Bilbao Masters (2011) I don't see the filth you refer to. Perhaps you are referring to stuff that took place on the World Cup (2011) page or perhaps our admins have already fixed it by the time I read your post. In any case, please let us know specific posts with the Whistle function and know that we are monitoring the situation several times a day. Also, thank you for that Tagalog translator, although it is rather lacking for our needs. That's all the more reason why we ask the many Filipinos who are friendly to CG to use the Whistle function and let us know when obscenity is being posted. |

| Sep-27-11 | | Shams: I realize this is a dicey suggestion, particularly for an international website based out of America, but is asking users to make the effort to post primarily in English worth considering? |

 | | chessgames.com: <Shams>
If you want a bird's eye view, we believe that the future of the internet will see people who speak different languages come together more and more. Of course language barriers will always exist, but with technology these barriers can become less of a problem and in some cases actually a boon. Chess, like music, has been described as a universal language. So it's only appropriate that Chessgames may lead the way in bringing together people of different languages. However, there is another side to this coin that we know all too well: certain groups of persons write in their native tongue not because they are incapable of communicating in English, but precisely because they do NOT want English speakers to read their posts. No need to beat around the bush here: we've seen a lot of trouble from certain members from the Philippines, who largely congregate on the page for Wesley So. This sort of behavior is clannish, segregationist, and elitist. While it may not specifically violate any of our rules it certainly is against the spirit of the Chessgames community. HOWEVER, it must be stressed that there are some Filipinos who are clever enough to use the CG interface even though they cannot actually communicate in English. They love chess, they are not here to disrupt our community, and they use our site earnestly. To them we say: <God bless you, enjoy the site, and rest assured you will never be unwelcome at Chessgames.> (If somebody wants to translate that into Tagalog, be my guest.) So to finally get to your question: "Do we officially endorse posting primarily in English when possible?" Of course we do. Nevertheless, that still leaves us with core problem: the posting of objectionable material in obfuscated language (whether it's Tagalog or Pig-latin). It's not easy to enforce the rules in this sector, but we have to try. Taking action against an entire race of people is not an option. |

 | | juan31: Thank you chessgames to thing in this way about the language, I now that you have the experience and the people to now who is writing just trash, many people (like me) only read the English and not write well, I consider that if you ask to write only in English at least to me was a very bad signal, but the core to come here is (like you say) to see and enjoy the universal language of chess. |
