(This was the cause of my earlier questions - I know they sounded a little dumb and naive, but in lieu of the e-mails I got, I had to ask.) |

| Oct-01-11 | | Shams: <So I'm afraid we have to stay on guard, unless you've already found a batch of new registrations with his IP.> Can't they ban him by MAC address? |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | dakgootje: Would that be an iIP or a UP? Certainly not a UPC - as PCs are MACs worst enemy. |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | Turnip: Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong forum; wondered whether anyone might be able to help please? I'm looking for all of the games in the Nottingham Tournament of 1936. Is such a game collection available and how do I find it please? Many thanks in advance. |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | Colonel Mortimer: <chessgames.com> Can you confirm that in a private communication with Mark Finan, you advised him that I should probably be the next one to get awarded a probation? As I have not had any direct communication with yourselves, I would like to know if you can confirm this? Mark Finan alleged this several times publicly on the CG.com yesterday which is why I'm posing the question in your forum. Thanks |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | Turnip: Sorry - I've just realised how to find it! |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | Shams: What, did you just fall off the turnip truck or something? |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | panchito: <God bless you, enjoy the site, and rest assured you will never be unwelcome at Chessgames.> Nice move there Mr. Freeman.
You are a hydra grandmaster personified.
Those mind them patzers...there are only 5 of them.
Whereas the lively chess loving filipino community will flock your church by the thousands. I assure you I will become a premium member as the rest of them filipinos if you continue with your kind and exemplary exercise and dispensation of justice. There accusations as you correctly pointed out is hogwash. With no iota of evidence that would amount to a probable cause, it is rightfully thrown out the window. Let me innumerate them again:
1. <One member has been driven off his own game page.> They may be referring to our very own GM Wesley So ...but do they know that GM So still maintains CG as the homepage for his laptop (information courtesy of Sugardom - a CG resident himself and Wesley's loyal friend and patron) . He peeps thru the pages from time to time as his little spare time would allow him...he has not left but chose to distance himself else face the bombardment of adulation of his multitude of fans who has chosen CG as their virtual home---fans become a little crazy sometimes...they can't help it...but they always try to maintain that sanity of mind to observe posting guidelines all the time. Believe me when I say so...I am one of them. 2.< and it looks like another could follow suit very shortly.> What kind of accusation is this? Accusing someone of something that has not yet happened. This must be a new trend in jurisprudence. I must update my law library immediately. 3. <The bigotry shown on the former is most distasteful and I can't read most of it.> FROM WIKI:
A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs. These accusation would most certainly apply to them 5 bigots than us. It's them who are resentful of our opinion about our belief and hopes for Gm Wesley So. 4. <In addition, the Tagalog bandits (a minority- most of the Pilipino members are not involved in this) have escaped from the Wesley So page, since they've ruined their own home- Wesley has abandoned them (and his OWN FREAKING PAGE ON YOUR SITE). They have taken to spamming the Tournament pages with all manner of argumentative and frequently obscene @#$%*&!#.> Your have answered this already as I reproduce your answer below and believe that it would suffice: <We take such alarms seriously, but when I go to tournament pages like 4th Bilbao Masters (2011) I don't see the filth you refer to. Perhaps you are referring to stuff that took place on the World Cup (2011) page or perhaps our admins have already fixed it by the time I read your post. In any case, please let us know specific posts with the Whistle function and know that we are monitoring the situation several times a day.> w/ continuation... |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | panchito: ...continuation..
5. < I strongly recommend you do something about this before your website gets a reputation as a JOKE> Contrary to their perception, we are one in saying that your website ROCKS!!! Keep up the good work. 6. <Are you afraid to do something decisive about this because you are afraid to be considered a racist? Nobody in their right mind would ever think that of you, on or off this site.> I say the accusation would more aptly apply to them than you Mr. Freeman. I like your name. It suits you well. You are welcome to live in our country all the time: http://youtu.be/4ss-d8Hf498
7. < Are you aware that many of these Tagalog Bandits are regularly posting obscene comments in Tagalog, brazen in the knowledge that you can't understand them?> Nonsense! Where's the proof? Burden always lies on the accuser. Let them prove it by translating our over 5600 pages of posts. 8. < HOWEVER, it must be stressed that there are some Filipinos who are clever enough to use the CG interface even though they cannot actually communicate in English. They love chess, they are not here to disrupt our community, and they use our site earnestly.> Tumpak! Korek ka Dyan!
English translation: You are absolutely right! You're correct on that point! 9. <Taking action against an entire race of people is not an option.> It's 5 grumpy bigots against 101,833,938 as of 2010 estimate. 10 <That's all the more reason why we ask the many Filipinos who are friendly to CG to use the Whistle function and let us know when obscenity is being posted. > We give you our word when we say that we will hold this as our solemn obligation and duty for the good of CG hood. In closing, we commend you Mr. Freeman for a job well done... As for the 5 bigots, we say to our Heavenly father, <Father forgive them, for they know not what they do..> Long Live CG and Long Live Us Filipino Chess Kibitzers. Long Live Wesley So! |

| Oct-01-11 | | Turnip: <Shams> What, did you just fall off the turnip truck or something? Is that intended to be helpful? Explain please. |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | Shams: <Turnip> It's a silly joke based on a silly American idiom. Your question was a good one, and I'm glad you found what you were looking for. Soon this website will have dedicated pages for historical tournaments. =) |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | Turnip: <Shams> OK.
I'm not American and I've just returned home from the pub: I probably have excuses for not understanding! |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | Shams: "He just fell off the turnip truck" means, roughly, "He's brand new here and doesn't understand anything." I'm sure the wit was a little sharper at the pub. |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | technical draw: <Shams> I prefer, "He just got off the boat"... |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | crawfb5: Or when defending yourself against that kind of implication, "I may have been born at night, but it wasn't <last> night!" |
|
| Oct-01-11 | | Shams: <td> But that one can be politically dicey. Although I guess my little aphorism could offend anyone from Turnipstan. |
|
| Oct-02-11 | | pulsar: Is it possible to have an Opening search function for team events like the European Club Cup? Personally, this is useful for me as I want to see what openings are being played in big events like this (the World Cup also comes to mind). Surely I can click on each player's name to see his/her games, but it would be awesome if I can see the games classified by openings. Thanks, <CG>! |

<chessgames.com: OK, that old problem. It seems that the dashes there were actually "em-dashes" and not your garden variety hyphen. That's enough to make it choke. (Word of advice: never use Microsoft Word to edit a PGN file. Notepad is our friend.)> Actually, I don't use Word.
1) The pgn submission tool could be changed in a way to show these mistakes, couldn't it? To me, everything looks perfectly fine but apparently not to you. What if the submission form showed the moves exactly the way they will be processed further (and possibly rejected)?
This way it's not quite satisfying because you fill out the form and then you basically never hear from it again. 2) What happens to rejected games apart from being stored. Do you ever have a look at them even if no one asks you about them? Could't you allow volunteers to repair those pgns with simple mistakes like that (mistakes not concerning the moves themselves or date, result and players)? 3) What about a page showing new submissions to browse through? 4) I think that the pgn upload utility page shoud display more information on how to make the pgns look like. To avoid problems like 1/2 instead of 1/2-1/2, etc. and more exotic ones to avoid many pitfalls. It happened to me quite often that the pgn example there wasn't that helpful when dealing with a more special submission. You already have a problem when trying to submit a consultation game. |

| Oct-02-11 | | twinlark: Hi <ceegee>!
The First Qin Huangdao Open Tournament is on and there are quite a few GMs participating, including Liem Le Quang, Li Chao, Negi, Wang Yue, Bu and other luminaries. Any chance of opening a forum for it? Sorry I can't find the official website. http://chess-results.com/tnr57319.a... |

 | | Domdaniel: I find that the best way to format a game for uploading is to run it through an engine like Fritz and then use the 'copy game' feature. No typing needed. Some judicious editing will remove unnecessary fields such as [plycount]. The output is fully compatible with CG's requirements. PGNs were designed to be pretty flexible. |
|
| Oct-02-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: Serious question:
I submit games all the time ... of course, I use the <pure> ChessBase output. ("File, send game" - a box comes up, check just the PGN box - then copy and paste the email output) ARE there any fields ... that I need to memorize and remove ... that you guys don't want to see? (I would do anything to shorten the turn-around time on my submissions.) |

 | | chessgames.com: <SwitchingQuylthulg: By the way, how's Jasper doing? We haven't heard an update in years!> (For those who don't know, Jasper is my cat and also SwitchingQ's avatar.) Jasper has grown (to put it mildly) although I'm not sure if he is aware of it. Imagine a 25 pound Maine Coon who is so skittish that when the doorbell rings he runs under the nearest object... which inevitably will not be big enough to conceal him! But when strangers aren't around he's all snuggles and purrs. He has another strange trait that I've heard is common among Maine Coons, a fascination for water. Not that he goes swimming, but he loves to splash water around with his paws whenever given a chance. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Domdaniel: <CG> - Mark Finan, lennonfan is back again, this time as User: Pocksucket
Worse than before, if possible.> Yes, we know. It makes us feel silly for giving him a second chance. Luckily he is very easy to detect both from a technical standpoint and from the drivel that he produces. <If I understood his confused threats, he said he had five more sockpuppets ready for use.> Yes I saw that too. The guy really needs a better hobby. <LIFE Master AJ: Is the above [Rousselle] game slated to be added?> Yes, it's in the queue now, hang in there should be any day now. <Turnip: Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong forum; wondered whether anyone might be able to help please? I'm looking for all of the games in the Nottingham Tournament of 1936. Is such a game collection available and how do I find it please?> If you are asking in *general* how to locate something like that on Chessgames then this is a fine forum to ask your question. The deal is this: unless you are talking about a world championship match you are forced to look it up in Game Collections and hope that somebody made a game collection that contains what you want. If nobody has a game collection then you'll probably find that we have the *games* but no easy way to list them all in one place. So let's keep our fingers crossed and try: Game Collection Search for "Nottingham 1936" Aha! Look at the second result: Game Collection: Nottingham 1936. You may be new here and not know all of our biggest users, but in my estimation if the game collection is by Hesam7 you can take it to the bank. |

| Oct-02-11 | | Whitehat1963: Hi, <chessgames.com>, I understand the reason for keeping obscure players mostly out of the Guess-the-Move database, but I think an exception might be made for this fun and short game: Lindehn vs Maczuski, 1863
Would you place it in the database, please?
Thanks for your consideration. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Colonel Mortimer> I'm sorry your name got dragged into this through no fault of your own and I feel I owe you an explanation. The context in which your name came up in my correspondence with Lennonfan was when he proposed the spurious old argument, along the lines of "You would be a hypocrite to punish me for what I'm doing because I am behaving similarly to other members, who are not being punished." I replied something like: "If you imitate (say) Colonel Mortimer who is breaking the rules than that doesn't exonerate your behavior; he may be the next member to go on probation." Your name didn't come up because you are specifically in some kind of hot seat, it was more of a random example chosen for didactic reasons. I could have easily picked a dozen other users to illustrate my point (in fact you were not even a very good example) but since it was a private correspondence I figured one name would be as good as the next. Silly me. If there is any moral to be gleaned from this it's probably to keep discussions with lunatics to a bare minimum. |
