  tpstar: Maybe it's O'Baburin and O'Lopez, laddie.

Domdaniel: "Laddie"? Only James Doohan said 'laddie': it's ersatz 24th century Scots.

Alex Lopez is at least as Hibernian as I am, and I have the chessical bruises to prove it. He has a charming Cork accent, too.

Don't say 'brogue': it means a type of shoe.

The other Alex, Baburin, may have grown up on the banks of the Don ... but, sure, doesn't it flow into the mighty Shannon itself, up near Sligograd?

Oct-03-11  Shams: <it's ersatz 24th century Scots.>

Presumably you have access to an authoritative Scottish lexicon from the period in question? That must be where you get all these words I've never heard of. I swear, sometimes I think you exist solely to point up my own lack of erudition.

Oct-04-11  Shams: I've never flagged any comments before today so I'm not sure how long the usual process is to get a post deleted, but it has been several hours now since I (and at least one other user) flagged a post on the Ivanchuk page. I know such things are personal but this post contained a graphic torture link that offends me more than anything I have ever read on this site. Can we please take it down, it's just revolting. And no I haven't clicked on it. Also please just ban the prick who posted it, thanks.
Oct-04-11  Whitehat1963: Hi, <Chessgames.com>, another request for the Guess the Move database:

A Ertelt vs R Gralla, 2011

Even though the players are obscure, I'm sure you'll agree the game is remarkable enough for the database.

Thanks.

chessgames.com: <Shams: I've never flagged any comments before today so I'm not sure how long the usual process is to get a post deleted> It can take minutes to hours; as it happened there was no admin available for the past few hours just due to some errands so it was a bit delayed.

<I know such things are personal but this post contained a graphic torture link that offends me more than anything I have ever read on this site. Can we please take it down, it's just revolting. And no I haven't clicked on it.> I removed the original post and the flurry of follow-up posts both chastising the user and warning others not to click. I spared myself as well by refusing to click on the links (any of them): the sheer volume of Whistles told me all I needed to know.

<Also please just ban the ***** who posted it, thanks.> I don't have any reason to believe he did it maliciously, since he's been a user for over a year without a single problem, but he obviously did a very dumb thing here. So instead of banning him we sent him an email explaining his error and reminding him that we strive to be 100% child friendly. I doubt he'll do anything like that again.

chessgames.com: <Domdaniel: <CG> Topalov is playing a clock simul *right now* against a team of Irish GMs and IMs (Baburin, Collins, Lopez, Quinn).> How exciting! I can't remember a stunt like that since Kasparov was king. Of course we'll get those games up for discussion as soon as we are able.

chessgames.com: <Whitehat1963> Dr. Galla would be tickled pink if we used one of his games for Guess-the-Move but first I would like to make sure that it is reasonably sound: not just the final combination but the play leading up to it. That being said, this still looks like it may qualify and may be a very fun GTM miniature.

chessgames.com: <Karpova> <Just one last question on the old system: What's the best way to proceed if a game you submitted doesn't show up (let's say for several weeks)?> A fair question.

If you know for a fact that the missing game was submitted around the same time as games which were accepted, you can be pretty sure that there must have been some problem. At that point you can perhaps looking carefully for an error, or (ideally) using a chess program to make PGN for you. Then resubmit it.

If it really becomes a mystery for you (let's say you're on the third go-around and can't figure out what the problem could possibly be) feel free to write chess@chessgames.com and we'll get to the bottom of it. Sometimes it turns out that the same moves were played move-for-move in the same year or by one of the same players; sometimes it's a little PGN glitch; sometimes it turns out that we have the game already but under a slightly different name spelling; but there's always some explanation.

Also, never feel shy to submit the same game twice just in case you fear something went wrong. It probably won't help but it certainly can't hurt. The software will never stupidly create a duplicate game due to such behavior, so if you want to resubmit something, go right ahead.

Oct-04-11  twinlark: <chessgames.com>

I hate to throw a damper on this love in, but I have to express strong disappointment at the inaction by yourselves in cleaning up the Wesley So page.

Seeing as you haven't responded to my last four emails <at all> and took your own sweet time responding to several urgent whistle blows in respect of insulting userids, I thought I might bring it to your attention on this page, just in case my messages have travelled by sea mail and haven't yet arrived.

Also, I'd like to draw your attention to several vicious and obscene messages directed at <ughaibu> including :

- one likening <ughaibu> to a homosexual who derives pleasure from fellatio performed by an old homosexual man.

- one saying that it seems <ughaibu> is on drugs, that he is from the mental hospital and that he is high.

- another exhorting another kibitzer <may you be sucked by a homosexual goat>

- another telling someone to be <be careful of that mad dog kenyan ughaibo>.

BTW "mad dog" is idiomatically more virulent in Tagalog than in English, the virulent homophobia is explicit, and the racism in reference to the "kenyan" is obvious. It's not just white folk that can be racist, so pull your finger out chaps, as you're condoning the inexcusable.

And don't be intimidated by some of these people accusing <you> of being racist: that is such an obvious pre-emptive ploy guaranteed to try and stymie sanctions on your part.

Good luck finding these and others directed at other members, as you don't seem to be interested in making use of people willing to offer their time and resources to help restore the Wesley So page to normalcy. I'm fed up with the whole mess, your tardiness and inactivity in responding to an intolerable situation and in not responding <when you said you would>, not even a simple non-committal acknowledgment, let alone anything substantive.

Grandmaster Wesley So posted his last post in July, and he expressed that CG.com kibitzers are "simply crazy" (Wesley So). Hopefully if he and his family have any sense they'll be staying away from the continuing debacle that is his player page.

Oct-04-11  LIFE Master AJ: Two quick questions:

#1.) How long before this "sand-box" thing actually kicks in?

#2.) Is this is what is holding up a few of my recent submissions? (For example, Rousselle - Franklin.)

I know you guys are busy, this is nto a top-priority thing ... or anything I am going to lose sleep over.

Oct-05-11  LIFE Master AJ: A suggestion for an addition to: "Guess the Move." (Kasparov vs D Barua, 2000)
Oct-05-11  Karpova: Thanks for your answer, <chessgames.com>!

There was something like that after Kasparov playing the czech national team: Game Collection: Germany vs Kramnik

Domdaniel: <Karpova> Topalov is due to play clock simuls in Jersey and Guernsey as well. Unless they import players, the opposition may be a little weaker.

Topalov drew 2-2 against the Irish team: he beat Quinn, drew with Lopez and Collins, and lost to Baburin.

Oct-05-11  Karpova: <Domdaniel>
Yes, I wrote that post because of the <I can't remember a stunt like that since Kasparov was king.> part. Kramnik's simul was in 2004.
Oct-05-11  crawfb5: Kasparov also beat an all-GM Israeli team in 1998 by a score of 7-1!

The Kasparov clock simuls I could find are in Game Collection: Kasparov's super simuls

Annie K.: <cg.com> seriously, guys, the So page - as well as the pages of ongoing tournaments and live games - need keeping a much closer eye on. Retroactive editing doesn't undo the real-time damage to the ability of civilized people to enjoy the site.
Oct-05-11  Colonel Mortimer: <seriously, guys, the So page> Not sure what the fuss is about the So page. But then I never go visit it.

I suggest those that keep whining about it do the same.

Domdaniel: <CG> I think this has come up before, but I have a small suggestion. On the game upload page, you have a sample game, Bird-Steinitz, which has close to the minimum number of fields required for a valid PGN. I presume this is deliberate.

It might be an idea, though, to replace it with one that had fewer [??] fields. The current one, for example, doesn't indicate whether dates should be year/month/day or year/day/month.

Some would-be uploaders may be confused about what exactly is needed, and this in turn leads to more games stuck in your <PGN Limbo> file. Or whatever the current destination of unbaptized chessgames is called.

Maybe even *two* sample games could be shown, one with minimum info, one with maximum?

Oct-06-11  LIFE Master AJ: Thanks for posting: J Rousselle vs A E Franklin, 2011, sorry if I bugged you about it. (Still looking forward to this sandbox idea.)
