 | | chessgames.com: <Amber Lite> That's great, we just got the rapid PGN (men and women)--looking forward to the blitz and blindfold next. |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> In case you missed it, may I repeat my earlier question about Tim Hortons and the three pseudonymic games in the database. Nothing against 'Tim' personally, he seems like a nice guy, and the games are quite good - internet draws against GM opposition. But I suspect that somebody with a username like, say, <dakgootje> or even <Quylthulg> would not get the same privilege, and would have to use a 'real' name to get in. Is it because 'Tim Hortons' happens to sound like a real name? And the giant Canadian franchise hasn't reached Florida? I'd just like to know the policy on this. |

| Dec-15-11 | | sneaky pete: To help make the correction needed: his real name is Tim Drawtons. |

 | | Stonehenge: <Dom> You missed a clue again. Tim Hortons obviously is an anagram of Miton - Short (K Miton vs Short, 2007). |

 | | Domdaniel: <Stonehenge> Why, thanks. I went off on a wild goose chase, <most in Hort>, seeking Vlasti's games with many moves ... |

| Dec-16-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: In your playing zomes, I cannot access my games, "Silverlight" does not work with the browser I currently use. There is probably an easy fix ... have a box that you could check. Then you could e-mail yourself the PGN of the game that you want to review. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Domdaniel: <CG> Isn't there a no-pseudonyms rule for database games? No CG user names, for example? How does that square with the three internet games played by Tim Hortons?
Unless deceased hockey players and Canadian fast food franchises have taken up chess. Nothin' personal, Timbo.>
We do indeed have a rule against pseudonyms, perhaps with a few historical exceptions (Judy comes to mind, and perhaps James Mason fits the definition.) The fact is that we only set up the page for Tim with the assumption that his name was in fact Tim Hortons. If that's not the case, I suppose we should shuffle those games into NN to be consistent, but we'd hate to rain on his parade. Maybe we can give Tim the salute given to James Mason. |
|
| Dec-16-11 | | benjinathan: Tim Hortons is not his name. It is the name of a popular doughnut shop chain in Canada, two branches of which (perhaps 5, if one counts branches in hospitals) are within 100 metres of where I sit now. No offence Tim. |

What if we made it so that designated forums are inaccessible to GMVA even during the "off months"?> That would work well. We could use the User: analysis forum as the main home for the discussion. It was set up specifically for use in the World games. |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> Thanks for the clarification. As I said, I've nothing against Tim and he seems like a nice guy ... I just had the impression that he submitted the games in genuine innocence of the practice, and you accepted them because his username looks like a 'normal' name. So the Tim Hortons chain hasn't reached Florida? Wow. We have some in Ireland. Typical Canadians. They'd rather cross the Atlantic than go somewhere hot. |

| Dec-17-11 | | LIFE Master AJ: User: nemesistic There is no doubt in my mind that this user is Mark Finan. He follows me all over this site. (stalking) After his previous offenses, it was my understanding that he was no longer welcome on this website. I would ask - that unless you are going to allow the trolls to run this site - you put a (permanent) stop to his behavior. |

| Dec-18-11 | | AylerKupp: <chessgames.com> I'll leave it up to you to determine your preference for preserving the privacy of a preparation group. I just made a suggestion that I thought would be easy for you to implement since it doesn't seem to require any changes in your current procedures. But, if you have another preference, by all means implement that. <hms123>'s idea is a good one and would work just as well. |
|
| Dec-18-11 | | AylerKupp: <chessgames.com> BTW, what is your current thinking about a thematic opening match game? The last discussion I remember about a month and a half ago involved the possibility of having a round of nominations for possible opening candidates and then a round of voting to select which opening would be played. Are you still interested in staging such a game? One suggestion to speed up things is to have you select a small list of openings, maybe 5 or 10. Each player who is interested in playing on either side of one of these openings would vote for that opening and the side that they would like to play. If a player is not interested in either side of a particular opening they would simply not vote for that opening. In the end the opening that received the most votes would be the opening selected for the game. Hopefully you would include the Benoni Taimanov Attack as one of the opening choices. Some issues come to mind. Each player could only vote for each opening once, on either side. I'll let you figure out how to prevent or at least detect "opening stuffing" by players with multiple accounts. And I suppose that in case of a tie in opening selection you would pick one of the openings at random. Just some suggestions in case you have nothing else to do. ;-) |

| Dec-18-11 | | matebay: Hi Boss. Re Tim Horton, I reckon he means no harm. In fact, sockpuppetry was once an admired art. No reason to label it as a form of sorcery. <nanobrain: Heteronyms then, sockpuppets today. There's nothing new under the sun.
The only difference perhaps is that whereas before, the ability to create heteronyms was an admired trait, sockpuppetry now has a bad connotation, thanks to some self-appointed censors of the web. Ricardo Reis had a poem entitled "To Alberto Caeiro." Both were Pessoa's heteronyms. Going by the definition of the great matebay (one of the many heteronyms of S.), that would be sockpuppetry. The poem, however, is beautiful, an inspired artistic creation, not unlike most of matebay's posts here at CG.> |
