  Annie K.: <dakkie> makes a valid point, <cg> - it's a bad habit of his. ;)

Accessing unfinished games via a link titled "Clear out all partially-finished games" has always seemed pretty counter-intuitive to me. And locating these stored games really should be easier. :)

Dec-29-11  matebay: <Why the long delay of blitz and blindfold games for SportAccord World Mind Games?>

To hide the truth..for Lagrave the winner of the blitz format drubbed by Wesley in their individual ICC blitz encounter.

Wesley wins 8, drew 2 and allowing Lagrave the consolation of a solitary win.

Domdaniel: <CG> -- < 1) it would be useful if next to "highest rating achieved" the year was mentioned. 2) for ex, when was Yermo rated 2699?>

It was good to see your positive response to this.

While you're at it, it might also be possible to remove some incorrect rating data from the database, by clearing the rating field of any player whose game dates and maximum rating don't match up. Some people, in submitting games, fill in the 'highest' rating rather than the one in use when the game was played.

Fixing them all would be a Herculean task, but this small step would move in the right direction.

Have a good new year, now. And a hep hogmanay.

Well, you know. And they're probably a more urgent problem than ratings.

Phony Benoni: Among the games I submitted from the 1953, 1954 and 1955 US Opens were sixteen played by <Allen Kaufman>, who does not yet have a player page in the database. These games are now listed under Larry Kaufman instead, who would have been 6-8 years old at the time. The PGN has also been altered to read <Larry Kaufman>.

I have submitted the usual correction slip, but wanted to bring this up here as well since it may be some sort of systemic problem. I have noticed this happening before, but not on such a large scale. Also, I'm now working on the 1957 US Open and more <Allen Kaufman> games are included.

chessgames.com: <Phony> Thanks I think we have it sorted out now in Allen Kaufman page. Are you sure however that this is different from Allen J Kaufmann, already on file?

<Thank God they are not Andy Kaufman> LOL

<dakgootje: Would it be possible to have a little button at Guess-the-Move 'resume last game'?> That's a good idea. Perhaps more accurately it could be called "resume most recent unfinished game".

Phony Benoni: <chessgames.com> My mistake; I didn't notice Allen J Kaufmann. They are undoubtedly the same person, but <Kaufman> (one "N") is the correct spelling. Here is his USCF rating page:

http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlTn...

He was head of the American Chess Foundation for many years, and helped to originate and award the Samford Fellowship. Also, I played him once and managed to win. This didn't seem to affect ACFs attitude toward Michigan.

Thanks for looking into this. I wish all those Kauf(f)man(n)s could get their act together and agree on one spelling.

Dec-31-11  Benzol: <chessgames> Now that the New Year has ticked over do you think you could process the game uploads that have been awaiting in the wings. Some of them have been there for a long time.

Any news on the player pages audio idea, guys? I'm running a YouTube channel for just that purpose now - http://www.youtube.com/user/AnnieK1... - but I'll be glad to send you all my audio files (either in m4a or mp3 format, as you prefer) any time you want to give them a try.

chessgames.com: <Annie K> Yes as a matter of fact we pretty much had it figured out thanks to a free flash mp3 player. The audio would be "inline" (no pop-up windows).

Unfortunately we couldn't use your mp4 files with this solution. (The mp3, although inferior, is more ubiquitous than mp4 for this application.) So we made a proof of concept in which when you pressed the pronunciation button it would play a few bars of the Rolling Stones (something from an old Present Hunt).

If you'd like to send us mp3s of a few players we'd be happy to put a few up as a trial. The main goal is to have a directory of pronunciations, e.g. the file for Max Euwe would be /audio/10706.mp3, or something like that.

Annie K.: <cg> Cool! No problem, I have an mp3 converter now, and I've switched to using them myself. I'll send you Euwe, Alekhine, Smyslov (a new version, please discard the old one) and Charousek, and see how it goes. :)

FWIW, this game is analyzed as Game #5 in <The Meran Semi-Slav>, by Vera, Reinaldo, translated by Phil Adams, Gambit Publications Ltd. (c)2007, at pages 24-28, where the following additional moves are included: <62. Rb5 Rb7 63. Rc5 Re7 64. Rc8+ Re8 65. Bxg7+ Kf7 66. Rxe8 Kxe8 67. h5> 1-0

Interestingly, with the additional moves from Vera’s book included, this game has the same number of moves, the same result, and the same ECO classification (although Black did vary on move 8) as the following game between the same opponents from the following year’s Cuban Championship: L Bruzon vs L Dominguez, 2005.

chessgames.com: Happy New Year, everybody. In 2012 we will indeed enforce our policy of not allowing discussion of specific rule violations on this page.

For example, if you are confused what it means when we say "2. No spamming, advertising, or duplicating posts." then that's fine, you can ask questions here, about what we mean by that. If you have a SPECIFIC complaint against a specific member, use the whistle.

In other New Year's Day news:

• We are importing the new FIDE rating list as I type.

• We have a new version of Chess Viewer Deluxe to beta-test (more info soon)
