chessgames.com: Now about Chess Viewer Deluxe II:

You should notice that under every game page there is an option that says "Chess Viewer Deluxe II (beta)". This is the new version of the CVD code.

It is superior to the old version in several ways, but the differences are all technical and behind-the-scenes. For most people there should be no discernible difference when you switch to CVD2.

If you want to know, it has to do with "inline PGN" as opposed to server-side PGN. With the current CVD, the page loads and then CVD makes an extra call to chessgames to get the PGN data. This sometimes creates a phenomenon where a page loads and shows a blank chess board, then some time later the pieces show up with the moves.

In some cases (especially workplaces) there is a firewall that prevents the access to the PGN file. Therefore there is a small percentage of people who are unable to use Chessgames normally with CVD but will be able to use it just fine with CVD2.

The only reason why we are beta-testing it is because there might be one or two people who could use CVD and have some technical problem with CVD2. Offhand we can't imagine how, but until you actually test these things you just never know.

<In summary> if you want to help test CVD2, simply switch over to "Chess Viewer Deluxe II (beta)" as your default viewer, and then IF you discover any problems that do not exist with CVD please let us know.

Jan-01-12  matebay: can I use a siren instead boss? I suggest you change the< blow the whistle> function to <sound the siren> function for more audible reception hence faster response.

  chessgames.com: <TECH NOTE:>

There is one known problem discovered with CVD2, but upon more research we found it also exists with CVD. The symptom is an error message <One error in opening the page. For more information, choose Window > Activity.> Upon closer inspection one finds that the browser is going to an irrelevant web directory to load some java that it already found in the right directory. We think it's probably a bug in Apple's Safari browser and not really specific to the software, and moreover it's harmless.

Jan-01-12  Shams: Very excited about the new CVD since the current one crashes my browser fairly often.
Jan-01-12  matebay: Hi Boss,

Since its new year and all, can I request you change Wes picture in the Wesley So page to a more recent one. Wes is in the process of joining GM Susan Polgar and her Spice club so wouldn't it be fitting that this picture be placed in lieu of the old one? He is on his way to become a campus hearthrob. Thanks.http://philboxing.com/news/pix/wesl...

FSR: On the front page you report that Robert Hess won the Groningen Chess Festival. Actually, as <mike1> has noted elsewhere, Alexander Kovalev and Hess tied for first at 7/9. http://www.schaakstadgroningen.nl/f...
Jan-02-12  Benzol: <chessgames> Have I hit the 4000 mark yet for game uploads? Also when can we expect to see the latest lot of submissions?
Jan-02-12  matebay: Hi Boss,

Just following up on the change of picture request...it will give the Wesley So page a breath of fresh air.

Peligroso Patzer: The following game has a nice finish (with Black setting a clever stalemate trap; and White then neatly avoiding it) and may be worthy for inclusion in your database:

< Shams: Very excited about the new CVD since the current one crashes my browser fairly often.>

I second this and have had similar problems. Maybe it's a Mac thing, but I've had to use the <pgn4web> interface which has less functionality. So far so good for me with beta.

Jan-03-12  Benzol: <chessgames> Have you ever thought of having pun submissions on players as well as games?
Jan-03-12  dakgootje: Presume it's a bug - but it's currently not possible to search for castling [be it short or long] in the sacrifice explorer.

  kingscrusher: Dear Chessgames.com

Happy new year!

I am keen to video annotate "iconic" games and have done two recently which not only match some of my all time most favourite video choices, but these two also appear in your database fun facts:

"Game of the century" - Donald Byrne vs Fischer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRco...

Kasparov vs Topalov - Kasparov's Immortal

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62XU...

What I would really love is to see an extension facility of the games in the most collections - to be able to specify start date and end date - the games added the most to member collections between those two dates.

So for example the games added to the most member collections between October and December of last year - I would expect for example some of Carlsen's magnificent wins to be there.

I think this would be a useful facility for highlighting the most collected games, and a great guide for the "Must see games".

Take the lovefilm.com analogy - when watching films on demand, they do have an app now which shows the highest rated films - and of recent weeks too.

Hope this facility can be made available in the future.

Also I think it would be cool to have a CSV option and/or provide a Google Doc spreadsheet of key game data - e.g. games added to more than say 50 collections could be put into a Google Doc spreadsheet. I have provided such a spreadsheet resource for my 3000+ videos here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...

The spreadsheet made it easy for me to order on any column and see the most favourited videos. Then I noticed correlation between some of these games and your database fun filled fact games.

Cheers,
K

Jan-03-12  shivasuri4: <chessgames.com>,the Reggio Emilio tournament uses the 3-1-0 scoring system, for the men at least,as has been pointed out on its tournament page.
Jan-03-12  Blunderdome: That's an interesting idea by <Benzol> -- for example, I submitted "Hort's So Good" as a pun on a Vlastimil Hort game awhile back, possibly not a GOTD-quality game. That pun could work on any Hort win, though.
Jan-03-12  shivasuri4: Er,I meant the Reggio <Emilia> tournament.
Jan-03-12  King Death: <brankat: Merry Christmas everyone! Well, not really "everyone" :-)>

You would exclude <everyone>? What kind of guy are you? He's OK and we need more like him!

Jan-03-12  Everyone: brings joy to this office.
