And, I believe, you even set a new procrastination record, while you were at it - congrats all around! ;)

Domdaniel: I retract that. I hadn't yet read the <week's suspension> list when I made the previous post. Gimme a second to delete it.

There we go. All's well. Seems a fair solution.

The only real flaw I can think of is that one or two of the sanctioned individuals might have their persecution complexes validated. But that happens anyway, regardless.

Well done, CG. Proper attention to detail, proportionality, and all.

Check It Out: Nice to see some action taken on the <AJ Wars>. I hope it works long-term.
Feb-27-12  Blunderdome: I've had frogbert's problem, too. I'm using Firefox on a laptop and when the Java applet is loading I can't scroll using the touchpad, so it is a little annoying.

A certain Women's World Champion turned 18 today, but she's about 14 in her picture. I've mentioned this several times, but you've never changed it or even told me why you won't.

On another note CG, is there any progress towards bringing actual chess playing software to this site ?

I'm worried it's short-sighted. Imagine how they will be when they come back. I liked cg's liberal stance as well and thought it a good idea not to ban even when the mob was braying for censorship.

People who chuck in random bible quotes are more irritating than the squabblers who've been banned IMO. But that's exactly the point - that its IMO. Now precedent has been set we'll hear a lot of 'ban them for this, just like you've banned others before'

Annoying as it was, it is unfortunate the liberal principle has been broken. Guess that's what happens when an administrator reaches the end of their tether though.

Feb-28-12  frogbert: kellmano, you seem to assume consistency (talking about "precedence"), but i'm not sure if there's empirical evidence that supports that assumption. at any rate, i'm uncertain about the long term effect too, but my preferred way of dealing with this and similar issues would probably have been considered even less liberal - by you - but hopefully more consistent than the current solution. at the end of the day i think it boils down to a question of resources.
Feb-28-12  Jim Bartle: Kellmano, frogbert: I think the suspended posters will realize when they come back they cannot continue offending other users (rather than just criticizing their posts). Seems clear that if they don't tone down their attacks they will be suspended again, for a longer period.
Feb-28-12  hms123: <JimBartle> I agree, but there's another benefit as well; viz., that those who were not suspended (named or unnamed) but who were also participants might realize that they got a little to close to the edge. To the extent that they tone it down, there will be less of a cheering section for the sort of behavior that drew so much scrutiny.
Feb-28-12  Jim Bartle: I'd also like to see some scrutiny of the Rogoff page, much as there was concerning all the AJ wars.
Feb-28-12  hms123: <JimBartle> The Rogoff page is another matter. Most of us don't bother with it. The problem with the AJ wars is that it was spilling over on to places (e.g., historically important games) that were hard to avoid.

If, for some reason, the Rogoff discussion suddenly moved to an historically important game page, I suspect you would see the same outcry from members of the site.

Feb-28-12  Jim Bartle: Good point, hms123.

chessgames.com: <I'm uncertain about the long term effect too> We're all uncertain about the long term effects, but in the short term, "silence has never been more beautiful."

What I can't help emphasize enough is that we're not trying to punish anybody per se. Nor are we assigning blame, saying "these are the seven culprits who caused this mess", nor asserting that "LMAJ is equally culpable as the rest of them." Maybe he is, maybe he isn't--it just doesn't matter. The bottom line is, our admins spend tireless hours cleaning up these messes created by the same few people. For the last month these are the people. (Going further back in CG history it would be a different set of users, but we decided to focus on what's going on right now and not dig up skeletons.)

And yes, if some of these people come back with chips on their shoulders and start to do the same things louder and more boisterously than before, there won't be any more quick seven-day cool offs.

Yesterday we deleted hundreds of posts. Today will be no different I imagine. And we still haven't even decided what to do about things like that infamous Goldsby-Nakamura game.

<The Rogoff page is another matter.> That's for sure. When we're done cleaning out the "Agean stables" maybe we'll roll up our sleeves and delve into that mess.

Feb-28-12  Jim Bartle: <That's for sure. When we're done cleaning out the "Agean stables" maybe we'll roll up our sleeves and delve into that mess.>

Oops, hope I don't end up as one of the "Hydra's heads."

Annie K.: <cg> I would advise leaving the Rogoff page alone. Every online community eventually develops a need for that sort of debate outlet, for those who enjoy such discussions - and a single page, not really used for anything else, conveniently out of the way of anybody of different temperament and/or here for other purposes, is pretty much the ideal solution. I'd say, allow that page to run with the minimal moderation necessary, and otherwise let it be. :)
Feb-28-12  benjinathan: FWIW-I am no fan of the Rogue page, but I gree with Annie.

Good luck.

Domdaniel: <hms> - <those who were not suspended (named or unnamed) but who were also participants might realize that they got a little to close to the edge.>

Yep. A few of us probably fall into that category, and I trust we're suitably chastened. I'm normally quite nice to everyone, of course - and I hate the notion of being part of any kind of crowd or mob - but sometimes it's just so hard to resist that jibe.

I'll resist harder in future. Honest.

As to the actual sanctions, two comments: (1) a week may be a long time in politics, but it can flash by pretty fast in CG-time -- is seven days reflection time enough to change hardwired behavior patterns? And (2) It might be an idea to suspend the ignore lists of suspended persons for a while - they might just get to see a bit more of what the wider community thinks of their wars, rather than simply ignoring it as 'enemy action'.

Just a thought.

Domdaniel: Herakles aka Hercules was the ancient Greek mythic hero whose Labours included cleaning out the stables of King Augeus - the Augean stables - which were deep in horse, er, manure. He diverted a river to flush 'em out, but the resulting fish kill makes him one of the world's first environmental criminals, and a big polluter to boot.

Law of Unintended Consequences. Manure happens.

Check It Out: I like the Rogoff page, I hope chessgames leaves it be; there's some worthy stuff that happens there. <cormier>'s religious spam and <diceman>'s ghetto spam are about the worst of it. It's a microcosm for coffeehouse religion and economics and doesn't effect other pages like the AJ wars have.

Feb-29-12  mockingbird: <chessgames.com> It would be great to have notable games from a tournament, similar to the "notable games of a player" feature. The same kind of logic could be used to pick these notable games too.
Feb-29-12  twinlark: Hi <ceegee>

Nice cleanup. Leave the Rogoff page though, it's a handy lightning rod.
