 | | Domdaniel: <Annie> - < 1.a3 is not an opening. It's only a way of saying 'I think I will defer the choice of opening to my opponent, or at least put it off until my next move'. ;p> And the difference between this and 1.e4 is ...?

Can you do something about those animated ads? I don't like the noise my computer fan is making. I thought one of the advantages of being a Premium Member was no, or at least less, ads. Now I don't mind 1 or 2 ads, but I really hate those animated ads. |

 | | WannaBe: <Stonehenge> Did you turn off the ads in your Profile->Edit your preferences and check the box for ads on the sidebars? |
|
Mar-14-12
 | | Stonehenge: Yes, I did that. |

 | | WannaBe: <Stonehenge> Um... the only ad I see on the main page is for T-Mobile phone, and I don't see any other ads anywhere else... I do see CG.com Chess Store, and 'Be Treated Like A King' ad. |

| Mar-14-12 | | hms123: <WannaBe> My only ad is Sprint. (other than chessgames-related ads). Could this be a US/non-US issue? |

| Mar-14-12 | | voratco: Bye Pulsar, I hope you stay, your presence in this site has been exemplary and I do hope you and your pals will continue to support cg. * cough * cough* |

| Mar-14-12 | | AylerKupp: <<chessgames.com> Aha! So you think the Taimanov attack should still be on the table> Yes I do. I think that it satisfies many if not all of your goals for this Thematic Challenge (contentious, wild, fun, not too deep into the opening, etc.). Of course, Team White need not go into the Taimanov attack by 7.f4 Bg7 8.Bb5+ by 8.Nf3 and Team Black could also prevent the Taimanov attack by 7...a6. In the later case after 8.e5 it would also be a fun game. I've been looking at Richard Palliser's new book on the Modern Benoni and he has a lot of unclear positions in his chapters on the Taimanov, so it looks like there are some opportunities to contribute to current theory. Even the 8...Nbd7 line, thought to be a sure loss for Black, has had a few new developments, leaving the final verdict unclear. One thing for sure, it wouldn't be a dull game! |

 | | chessgames.com: <Stonehenge: <CG> Can you do something about those animated ads? I don't like the noise my computer fan is making. I thought one of the advantages of being a Premium Member was no, or at least less, ads. Now I don't mind 1 or 2 ads, but I really hate those animated ads.> Just to make sure you know how it works, premium members have the OPTION of turning off advertisements. It doesn't automatically happen. So that means I am assuming you've already gone to your preferences and set <Do not display sidebar advertisements.> right? Now, even if you've done that, there are lots of exceptions to the preference-page rule that exist, especially on the homepage. If you can tell me the exact place on the page where the animated ads appear, I have a hunch we can take care of it. Chances are only certain Google regions are doing this, and if we made a rule that premium members can disable those regions, that's fine by me. |

 | | WannaBe: On a serious note, I have not encoun.tered any issues on my new Android phone, using the web to access CG. The web2pgn works great, I just can't resisize the board smaller. But it can be resized bigger for my tiny screen. |

 | | chessgames.com: Just to clarify, by "regions" I means "regions on the page" not on the globe :) I think Google's own term for the concept is an "ad zone." |

 | | chessgames.com: < I just can't resisize the board smaller. > Is that something that you might actually want to do? |
|
Mar-14-12
 | | WannaBe: <CG> Believe it or not, yes, if I want to see the whole board, or touch the little move arrows without shifting the screen up, and then back down to see the pieces again. I know, I am weird, my mother have told me that many times. But, again, it's no big deal, because typing messages are much easier on a regular keyboard. (Like now... =)) |

| Mar-14-12 | | achieve: <Just a minor Bug Report - but my cursor disappears when composing a comment at the HJ Federer page.> <CG> <And *only* that page?> Yes <Really?> 'tsweird, isn't it? <When the cursor disappears is typing still possible?> Yes, I can type, but when I need to go back up for a correction, use the arrow keys, I have little clue to where I'll end up, heh, well I can count, but to "establish position" I need to type a letter, and then go again from there to get to the exact spot. Dropping the invisible cursor with the mouse does work though. <or is it as if you clicked outside of the window?> Yes- well... I appear to be constantly out of the window, while typing and being inside the window at the same time! But please let me know if others experience the same. I am of course now used to "it" - although I - like you - am dying to know what is causing this, and a fix of "it" would be a nice bonus. To be honest I know zilch about bug repair issues, but the fact that this "only" happens on the Federer page, perplexes me. |
|
| Mar-14-12 | | achieve: <CG> To be more precise, the on/off strobing little upright bar indicating my position, freezes immediately, as if glued tight, and when I merely move (not even click!) outside the type box, it disappears from my screen, becomes invisible, while still being "there"... When composing a comment like that it feels as if someone is covering one of your eyes, a "semi-blindfold", when you are of course used to using the pair. I hope that my latest clarification does help. ;\ |

| Mar-15-12 | | matebay: <I empathize with his point of view. Nobody likes being sent to the principal's office. If the roles were reversed, I might make a fresh account myself.> Tell that to someone with a reputation to protect...and I guarantee you my kibitzing privilege that they would gather whatever means necessary to preserve their original identity...their investment in time and hours of pondering over their posts tied up with it...if it their user ID goes out in smoke so will their years spent in CG...twas a waste of time after all. The fact is you have suspended a lot of deserving kibitzers lately and you automatically reinstated them after 7 days. Why would <nanobrain> be treated differently? It's just fair as a strict observance of the right of equal protection of law that you reinstate <nanobrain> as well ...i.e. after the 7 days probation period has lapsed. <Nanobrain> need not email you. Why would he? The others you put in probation did not. Doing otherwise would be a wanton act of tyranny. |
|
| Mar-15-12 | | matebay: <CG> your views are so clouded that I suggest you draft and adopt a constitution . |
|
| Mar-15-12 | | Once: <matebay> I think you've made your point. More than <once>. And I think that CG.com have made their position clear too. You're not going to change their minds. And I don't see a vast army of users (premium or otherwise) agreeing with you. Time to move on and change the subject. |

| Mar-15-12 | | AgentRgent: <chessgames.com:You see, some Benoni advocates insist on only playing ...c5 once White has played Nf3, therefore eliminating the possibility of the f4-e5 thrust (or f4-f5) thrust.> I'm not sure I would "insist" on playing it "only after Nf3", but it's certainly a more enterprising try. The Taimanov may not be a forced loss for Black, but it's certainly "forced". There is very little room for creative play and it would simply become an engine exercise very quickly. I'd love to see: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5! |
|
| Mar-15-12 | | King Death: <AylerKupp> In the Taimanov, 8.Nf3 transposes to a King's Indian Four Pawns which will be pretty easy to prepare for as Black. The theory on that goes back to the 1950s in the older lines, though Black played an inaccurate 9th move in this recent game that you may remember: Jobava vs P Ponkratov, 2012. |
