Domdaniel: As regards crimes and punishments, I've always had a soft spot for the old common law saying:

"He that Killeth a Man while Drunk, Sober shall he Hang."

Mar-21-12  Jim Bartle: Well, MarkFinan, you made your own bed with your performance as Lennonfan. Or are we supposed to forget about that?
Mar-21-12  Jim Bartle: Focus, I just don't think somebody's past under a different name should just disappear with a new name. If somebody makes an effort to clean up his image, or apologize, etc., that's a different story. It's not as if I've been following this guys posts one by one since he first appeared.

He wrote "I have a reputation now, which is unfortunate." It's my opinion he did a lot to earn that reputation. Maybe he's worked to overcome it, don't know.

Mar-21-12  hatsis: <hms123> Your answer was appreciated but I'd rather hear it from the boss, the guy who have access the red and green button.:O)
Mar-21-12  TheFocus: <JIm Bartle> I didn't notice your post when I deleted mine. I had to leave and if a post is not satisfying to me, I delete it until I can be online for longer than an hour.

But, I liked <Nemesistic>, hated <Lennonfan>.

chessgames.com: <hatsis> Really that is a matter between CG and nanobrain and not your business. We usually do not assign numbers of days to probation: we wait for the accused to contact us by email and then try to reach a resolution as soon as possible. Having said that, hms123's description is pretty good.
Mar-22-12  LIFE Master AJ: <The second charge is so laughable it doesn't even deserve to be rebuked.>

Yet - at one time, I could find dozens of a certain type of <extremely tasteless joke> (by one certain user). However, when last I searched, you apparently had deleted all of these comments.

If something has no basis in fact, can it really cause you to modify your behavior? (I would not think so.)

*******

I also noted that all of my game pages have the kibitzing section disabled. This is probably necessary, and I would like to see it as a permanent change. If someone wants to comment on a game, they could always e-mail me. (My e-mail is in my header.)

In this fashion, the trolls could be permanently contained.

If there is enough demand, I could always post a game on my web page. And if someone wanted to make a really objective comment, I would gladly post it underneath the game.

Tabanus: <cg> Most (if not all) of my bio posts are now obsolete, as they are copied, corrected, enhanced, rewritten and/or replaced and put in the bio section. I won't be angry if you delete (any of) them.

It seems to me that with the current bio writers the bio section on top is a success. But the database of games can be improved. What if you give a handful of people (not too many, and not me) the right to add, edit and delete games? For example with an upper limit of how many games to add or delete. Or with the right to act on correction slips only. I think you would be happy with what a few people can do in this respect.

i concur. i'd gladly spend time correcting game type information (classical/rapid/blitz etc) in order to make this correct for all current 2700+ players as a start.

if you would give me stored procedure calling template (you probably have one already, what i could get only needed to have the right structure without the actual names so that you don't give away any info about the db, if you're sensibly "paranoid" about it) that simply takes game-id and "game type" as parameters, then i could even prepare an sql-file ready to be run (after proper search/replace of procedure name) to make the changes.

or i could produce a simple table in any format with game-id and game type that could be used to correct entries. whatever you desire, really.

i'm ready to spend time on doing such work, as long as there is a dedication to apply the produced data.

Mar-22-12  Hesam7: <CG.com> I sent you guys an email about 2 weeks ago. Did you guys get it?
Mar-22-12  Colonel Mortimer: <AJ> <I also noted that all of my game pages have the kibitzing section disabled>

Wise and hopefully permanent.

Mar-22-12  frogbert: <Maybe ceegee can provide us with some insights into this if it is indeed an issue? Just saying.>

wikipedia is basically written by volunteers, but maybe it's legally a different type of company/organization?

anyway, we do currently have the bio-writers - i didn't think their work was paid, but maybe it is?

another analogy - icc used to have (and probably still have) numerous "helpers" who assist new users and can help with simple, technical tasks on the site. afaik those efforts were also unpaid - possibly they got free memberships for a period in return (i don't know), but i seriously doubt legislation about minimum pay or such would be a problem for this kind of work.

but of course, in essence i agree, twinlark: some brief info about legal obstacles, if any, would be good/useful.

Mar-22-12  crawfb5: <frogbert><Tanabus> The current bio writers are volunteers. There are no real legal restrictions to allowing some select group limited control over some aspects of the database. It's an idea that has been floated before, but CG has been reluctant to do so without mechanisms in place to track changes in case they needed to be undone. It's a problem they've had on a smaller scale with occasional bad edits of bios.
Mar-22-12  twinlark: Sorry frog, I deleted my post when I concluded it wouldn't add anything useful to the discussion.
Mar-22-12  frogbert: <CG has been reluctant to do so without mechanisms in place to track changes in case they needed to be undone>

with the method i proposed (or something similar), they wouldn't really open up anything for anyone. they would technically make the change themselves, with full control over what changes would be effected - enabling a "preview" of the changes, transaction & rollback functionality, etc.

technically cg.com could implement exactly as fine-grained change control they'd like using such a scheme.

however, for some types of changes (not the ones i volunteered to do) there might be a need to be able to preview the change (for the person doing the editing). so that might be an issue in certain areas.

the level of "abstract thinking" needed to provide info in the way i suggested, shouldn't exclude very many contributors i guess; after all non-programmers are very much used to dealing with columns and rows (tables) of information.

Tabanus: Guys, I doubt cg would be able to implement much change control, as they are also doing this for a living. IMO they would have to trust a few.

I would trust e. g. twinlark and frogbert! There are many others but I haven't followed their postings.

Can't change control also be automated? For example, any change creates a (dated) post in a certain forum on who did what. I realize that would not necessarily mean the change could be reversed.

Domdaniel: <LMAJ> wrote (among other things) -- <If someone wants to comment on a game, they could always e-mail me. (My e-mail is in my header.)>

This means that the games have no business being in the database at all.

I appreciate that some of Mr Goldsby's games have been disfigured by inane or insulting posts, some of them made by him. I assume that any disabling of the kibitz function there is a temporary measure while this is cleared up.

I don't see how one player's games can be given a special firewall. The *purpose* of the CG database - check your mission statements - is to provide a historical database of chess games *upon which members are able to comment, if they adhere to certain guidelines*.

The point of discussing and analyzing games is to hold a public conversation about them. I agree, of course, that this should not be about the assumed character of the players. But the idea of emailing one's analysis to a player privately is absurd, in the CG context. Do it if you really want to, but it's not what this place is about.

I will refrain from commenting on exactly what kind of brown-nosed grovelling qualifies as "objective" comment in the Goldsby universe.

I still don't see how he can remain, having publicly attacked the site. Or even why.

But thanks, CG, for including a recap of AJ-related comments in a recent post. People with long ignore lists often fail to hear what is being said, unless somebody in authority points it out to them.

chessgames.com: Not many people have been around to remember this, but a looooooong time ago the Goldsby games were shut down for kibitzing just like they are now. The reason was exactly the same: that the discussion on them was a constant source of complaints and strife.

And you know what? It worked brilliantly.

Then later (years later, I think), I assumed that since the fire was out, there was no harm in eliminating the rule. And so I rescinded the original decision. Quite possibly the most regrettable decision I've ever made regarding the management of this website.

Mar-22-12  MarkFinan: <chessgames.com> Would i, if a premium member, be able to submit some of my old tournament games from when i was actually a decent player??

It's just iv'e got two games, one against GM Short, and one against Ex-British champion Brian Eley(one loss, one win) that i plan on digging out sometime soon, and id like to post them.. Or do you have to have a current FIDE, USCF, BCF etc... rating to have a player page??

<It seems to me that with the current bio writers the bio section on top is a success.> Agreed, and thanks.

<But the database of games can be improved.> Also agreed.

Well, we have one person who does exactly that as a part time job now--our lovely and fastidious User: CG Librarian.

Part of the reason why we've never been open about this kind of editing is that the admin tools are very roughy, and extremely abstruse. There's no documentation. There are no nice "are you sure?" windows to stop you from doing something disastrous. One wrong slip and you've just deleted Bobby Fischer! Oh and by the way, there's no "undo". Of course we have backups, but if a big mistake was made things would get REAL messy. The only reason that I trust our Librarian to do the job is that she possesses a rare kind intellect that allows her to do this work unerringly.

However there are a number of small discrete things that could be "nerfed" and then we'd feel comfortable about sharing the work. Things like "Player black in this game wasn't _____ like it says, it was really ____." If a trusted user like Phony Benoni or Stonehenge makes a correction of that type, you can take it to the bank. So would I trust them to edit it directly? Sure I would. The software just isn't in place... at least not yet.

WannaBe: Re: PGN submission, I believe, the (old) rule is, one of the participant have to be (ELO) 2200+

Not sure what that equates to in term of British ratings... But if the game(s) involves N. Short, I'm quite certain they would qualify.

Mar-22-12  MarkFinan: I guess the problem will be *proving* that these games are Short and Eley's games!.. I doubt GM Short could confirm this given the game is over 25 years ago, but i did once ask him if he remembered playing a simul in Scarborough, England, but he never answered...

So, if anyone could tell me how i could verify this, thanks in advance..

They were played mid 80's!

WannaBe: <CG> Just as an FYI, file it away for future references...

1. Checked out the new addition by <Annie K.> for the Chinese pronunciation on my Android phone, worked really good.

(Now, if I can only find the volumn control for the device, not my ring-tone.)

2. Interesting observation, if a page, have 2 links to the target (e.g. avatar of <Phony Benoni> and the forum link, the forum link would not work, but the avatar link would.

So, as an example, if I go to recent forum kibit'n and my forum have a recent post. My avatar and/or my forum's "WannaBe's Forum" link would not work. I need to tap on the <profile> button on top right.

Wonder if anyone else have seen this on their smart (i)phone. I wonder if this done to cut down (the amount of) data transmition?

Again, not terribly important, just some info that I want to share.
