 | | WannaBe: I did not know that you had an anonymous gift page... And I thought I knew everything on this site. Shows you how much I know. =(( |
|
| Mar-27-12 | | MarkFinan: <chessgames.com> Thank you. And i *do* appreciate your welcome, and <Annie K.>'s gift too, bless her... I'll keep all my issues in my forum, without breaking the rules.. Lets start again....again :) |

| Mar-27-12 | | hms123: <Mark> I didn't mean to imply that you thought I had paid for your membership. I do occasionally buy memberships anonymously, though, and wished to express my hope that the admins would keep them anonymous. At least once in the past, they did not do so in a situation not involving me. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: I did, however, buy <hms123>'s membership. It was part of a multiplayer deal that saw Peyton Manning off to the Baltimore Orioles or wherever the heck he ended up. |
|
| Mar-27-12 | | hms123: <jess> Indeed! But I repaid you with that shipment of kimchi that was delayed for a year. No one could tell the difference when it finally arrived. |

 | | WannaBe: <CG> Your parsing algorithm could use a bit of improvement: The Biographer Bistro the link is to another web page, but the parser thinks it's CG's player page. The post is: <Thanh Phan: Some games listed for Olga Sukhareva (WFM)[unknown player]> |

 | | Domdaniel: <crawf> Re: John Finan Barry ... almost certainly of Irish ancestry. The use of a surname (Finan) as a middle name is much more an American habit than an Irish one, however, which suggests a couple of generations had passed since ummigration. 'Ummigration' is the word to use when neither 'emigration' (stressing the origin) nor 'immigration' (stressing the destination) will do. Coined by <Annie K.>. Barry is a particularly well-known surname in Cork, where it has the kind of resonances that Cabot and Lowell do in Boston. A leading 'British' artist of the early 1800s, James Barry, was born in Cork, for example. Ditto Peter Barry, Irish foreign minister 25 years ago. And so on. |
|

 | | Domdaniel: The Barry Attack, however, was not named after any player called Barry -- though J.F. Barry and B.H. Wood were once among the suspects. It's actually rhyming slang for 'rubbish' -- 'Barry White' rhymes with, eh, 'rubbish'. |

|
| Mar-27-12 | | MarkFinan: <Dom> I said the same thing about the surname *Finan* having Irish roots, because a lot of Irish emmigrated to America in the 19th Century, but the post vanished! Well, iv'e already got my Gran "on it", so it'll give her something to keep her busy because she seems genuinely interested.. Although she did say she hasn't heard it before as a middle name.. My Grandfather was actually called John Finan, and his Grandfather William Finan, and he was definately Irish.. <hms123> Sorry, i didn't mean to imply you did mate, just a misunderstanding.. :) |

| Mar-28-12 | | AylerKupp: <jessicafischerqueen> I think that you will like this one. Many years ago someone asked my wife which team she was rooting for in the World Series. She said "Baltimore!". When asked why she replied "Because Oreos are one of my favorite cookies". Honest, I couldn't make this up even if I tried. |

 | | kutztown46: <AK> That must have been a very long time ago, given the futility of the "Oreos" for the past few decades. This may possibly match your story: My wife and I were having dinner at home one day many years ago when she momentarily choked on her food. She quickly recovered and then said with a straight face, "That was close! I was afraid you would have to perform the Heineken manuever on me." |
|
| Mar-28-12 | | Shams: <kutztown46>,<AylerKupp> Sounds like you both were pulling from the same sorority. |

| Mar-29-12 | | AylerKupp: <kutztown46> Yes, it was a long time ago. And "Heineken" certainly matches up to "Oreos". <Shams>, <WannaBe> Perhaps, perhaps. |
