 | | Domdaniel: < all other things being equal, go with the one that has nicer headers. Works 90% of the time :)> And why does it work? Because a PGN with a full set of headers is likely to come directly from some other reputable database. While the skimpy ones have possibly come via a book, magazine or DVD, with room for mistakes to creep in. But you know this. And you wouldn't have posted the Hernandez Mystery here if all the usual avenues of enquiry weren't already exhausted. Innaresting. Eric Schiller may know the answer, as he was one of the first western players to work with the young Kasparov. |

Not sure if your memory is playing tricks on you or not, but here is a <cg> post from the 2nd or third page of this forum in response to an allegation that the game of the day was based on pun worthiness: <<blingice: What's the criteria for choosing GOTD? Are there amusing game days and instructive game days?> Hopefully everything is instructive to some degree. I'm not sure if by "amusing game" you mean an amusing pun or the moves in the game are amusing. We have many different ways to find interesting games--game collections, Informant's picks, the Sacrifice Explorer, games recommended by notable GM's in books, etc. Sometimes we need a game to fit a pun. E.g. we recently celebrated Zhaoqin Peng incredible performance at the Dutch women's championship with the pun "March of the Peng Wins", even though we didn't have a specific game in mind. We went through all of her games from that event and picked a good one.> As an aside whihc you might find amusing, here is one of the earliest posts from the first day the forum was opened: <EmperorAtahualpa: <chessgames.com> I understand you are getting tired of spending time on moderating the Goldsby page.
Therefore, would it be a good idea to give some volunteers the authority to become a moderator on this website? I am thinking here of long-standing members who take "kibitzing etiquette" seriously, such as <tpstar> for instance. This would lead to a "cleaner" website and you would have more time available to do all the other necessary things such as working your way through the corrections queue or enlarging the database.> |

| Apr-03-12 | | Blunderdome: Question about the random game feature: does it actually pick at random (at least, in the way that a computer does things randomly) or is it weighted in some way (games with kibitzing / in game collections / etc more likely to appear)? Also, is there a way to get a random game within certain parameters? Could I find a random game from 2009, a random Najdorf, a random Smyslov game? |

| Apr-03-12 | | achieve: <chessgames> We have discussed at length on what I need do to assist you, with pronunciation of Dutch player names; I did, sent you a file with a dozen names on it some <two weeks> ago and you haven't responded in any way, as I asked for some feedback if needed, let alone uploaded them. Care to share with me why you are swiftly effectuating premium accounts while deleting not only a few of my posts but more so not even responding to my "pronunciation" contributions via email? It took me quite a bit of time to record and send the material. Please check your mail thoroughly and attentively. Because of your failure to do so I am forced to post "in here." |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <dom> no doubt that <Emperor Atahualpa> was indeed ahead of his time, but in more ways than one let's not forget. He led a lynch mob against old <Bidfomona> for the crime of "spamming" his historical web page with links back to CG, whilst simultaneously hosting the longest off-topic discussion in CG.com history. 56,000 pages of his forum on the World Cup.
Happily, <Bidfomona> continues his fine chess history site, while <Emperor> has retired from the lists of epic spammers. Other epic spammers remain, of course, such as the bint who posted the word "quack" over a hundred thousand times in her forum. |

Because of your failure to do so I am forced to post "in here."> Point well taken, and I apologize for missing such an important package of info. I just went through your MP3s and I thank you very much for them. Your pronunciations of Jan Timman and others are perfect. I'll address the other issues by email, again I apologize for the delay. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Karpova> <When I prepare a pgn-file with the Rubinstein games from the 2nd edition of 'Volume 2: The Later Years', shall I sent you the whole file and you could easily pick out the games missing from the database or would a pgn-file containing the missing games only be more convenient?> Here's the situation: if you give me ALL the games, not weeding out any duplicates beforehand, then in principle any games which are duplicates will automatically be ignored. So you can save yourself the trouble of removing duplicates. However, suppose a game you give me is *almost* like a game we have on file, with an extra move at the end, or a transposition in the opening, or some other minor discrepancy. Then we wouldn't reject the new score. That's how "duplicate" games are born. All things considered, I think I would actually prefer to see the duplicates created, because in every such difference a question crops up as to which score is the legitimate one. It's better to actually address these issues than to sidestep them. |

 | | chessgames.com: <MarkFinan> <On your guess the move feature, i get say 15 moves deep and then i'll get a message that says "Error.. Bad game request", and if i try go back a page to guess the move again it won't let me play... Im on a phone, so im typing the moves manually, but im doing as instructed i.e e4xe5+... Is this because im using a phone? I dont understand!> I dont understand either; you never should get the "bad game request" error at all. What kind of phone are you using? Does it always happen, every time you play, or seemingly just happen now and then at random? |

| Apr-04-12 | | achieve: <CG> <Point well taken, and I apologize for missing such an important package of info. I just went through your MP3s and I thank you very much for them.> You're welcome. Listening back they aren't that bad at all; not yet in <AnnieK>'s league, though. ;) I did attach a "clarification" in response back to your email. After I sent it, I went here to read your "point well taken plus apology" response, and initially felt my (email) response might be a bit "overdone", yet I'm glad I sent it as I did. Again, thanks for both your responses.
We're here to "support", as the forum name indicates, and good to see it back in shape again. Speaking of, I'll improve on the <Joop van Oosterom> file I sent, I think I heard some "wind" ... |

Though I submit corrections if you have the incorrect game score and usually other members noticed that already, too. |

| Apr-04-12 | | twinlark: hi <ceegee>
The tournament name of the game R Garcia vs J A Rubinetti, 1972 (and presumably any others from that batch) still misspells <Argentinian> as <Argintean>. There are several optional adjectives and demonyms for Argentina, none of them being <Argintean>. If you want something legit that sounds like the latter, then maybe <Argentine> would work, although the first one - <Argentinian> - is generally accepted and used. <Jerman> or <Ostrian> or <Armerican> are never used so by the same token, <Argintean> is invalid. |

 | | chessgames.com: We're being flooded with emails saying that the games don't appear on game pages. After a little research, we found out that there is a new Java update, and because this update is flagged as a 'security update' there are some browsers (notably Firefox) that intentionally disable the old version until the new one is obtained. Because of all this we added this urgent message to the homepage (you can't miss it) <BREAKING NEWS: A few days ago, a new version of Java® was released. Some web browsers will no longer display our chess games until you install this update. If you do not see the chess board & pieces on our games pages, please visit www.java.com and install this update. It's easy to do, safe, and absolutely free. Thanks!> I just wanted to say, we know that the statement is kind of ugly and "in-your-face" but we're going to leave that message up for maybe 48 hours or so. Hopefully that will straighten out a lot of people with this problem. It might even help some people who have *never* had Java installed; that's why we phrased as we did. Some people will think "Board and pieces? you mean we're supposed to see a board and pieces? No way!" |
|
| Apr-05-12 | | LIFE Master AJ: BTW - I already had this problem a day or two ago ... solved it by downloading the latest version of JAVA. Of course, the inset (chess diagram) is controlled by JAVA ... without it, it won't work. I also could not get your website to come up for several hours Tuesday night (to Wed. morning), was this my DSL ... or were you having another network problem? (Not sure, here.) AT&T DSL is pretty good, but cable would probably be better. (more expensive 2) |

 | | WannaBe: When you couldn't access CG.com, can you access any other web sites? That should help you in pin-point the issue, I had no problem Tue/Wed, but you did not specify what time it (the connection problem) started/ended. The more detail you can provide, the easier/better for us to help. |
