| Apr-16-12 | | MarkFinan: <chessgames> Well i finally got through a GTM game (5 hours!), Fischer v Petrosian 1959, but i had to click on the link you posted above at *least* ten times!!
It doesn't really bother me having to click the link, and start where i left off again, but there's definately something wrong there as i didn't type any illegal moves.. It can get frustrating, but its still pretty addictive which is why i don't mind clicking the link you posted, but i can imagine others here getting annoyed with going back and forth..
If possible, could you post that link in my forum please, just until the problems been fixed,as i'm sure you know by now that compared to most i'm totally hopeless with computers, and anything else technology wise for that matter.. I still got 125 points, and the par was 111, so i definately want to use that feature more often.. Other than that, all is well, so thank you :) |

 | | WannaBe: <Stonehenge> That's one long match, 362 days long? Or is that the new European way of writing dates? I know in U.S., we like to put Month/Day/Year, and everywhere else, it is Day/Month/Year, or even Year/Day/Month. =)) |

When I am on certain pages, e.g., <players>, <tournaments>, <database statistics>, the <enhanced menu> does not appear. Is there a reason? Is it possible to have it appear? It would be very convenient. Thanks.> There are a few pages where it cannot appear because they are normal HTML pages. The simplest example is the Chessgames Help page, if you look at the URL it's simply "chesshelp.html" and therefore it cannot customize itself for each person's needs. Our ChessGames.com Statistics Page pages is another example. I won't say there is *nothing* that we can do about this: if it was very important we could make those pages script-based so they can customize themselves, but since these pages are rather peripheral we never regarded it as a big problem. However I'm confused at why you would say <players> and <tournaments> lack the menus -- those pages most certainly should have enhanced menus if you have them turned on, and a quick check shows that I see my enhanced menu on those pages. Are you sure they are missing from player and tournament pages? If so there is a bug that needs to be addressed. |

 | | chessgames.com: <MarkFinan: <chessgames> Well i finally got through a GTM game (5 hours!), Fischer v Petrosian 1959, but i had to click on the link you posted above at *least* ten times!!> I hate to tell people "use a different browser" but clearly something is very wrong and probably what we will learn in the end is that certain browsers have a problem with GTM as it currently stands. So if you really want to play GTM rather than spend 5 hours per game I would advise you use Firefox, Chrome, Opera, etc. We never heard anything about this until just a week ago and since that time three people reported basically the same problem. That could be a coincidence or it could be that a change to MSIE came with a recent windows update. One member said that it even happens at the outset of a game before you are even guessing moves, when the only thing you have to do is click on the big colorful arrow. In their words <The arrow works about 70% of the time, the other 30% of the time I get error page (Bad game request).> Of course they aren't lying, but at the same time the claim sounds absolutely absurd. A web form is not a random number generator. Try as we may, we cannot replicate the error. Until we can get one of our machines to produce the error it's very unlikely that we will be able to fix it. The details we collected from that person was that they used Internet Explorer version 7, under Windows XP. If you don't mind, email us details about your system and try to give us your instructions as to how we can replicate the error. |

 | | chessgames.com: <MarkFinan> OK here's a question. There are a few ways you can make your move in GTM. Different people have different habits. Tell me exactly what mouse/keyboard strokes you use to enter a move. For example suppose your move is 4.Nf3. Do you:
1. Click on g1, then click on f3?
2. Type "Nf3" in the move box and press enter?
3. Type "g1f3" in the move box and press enter?
4. Type "Nf3" in the move box and then press the button that reads "GUESS THE MOVE"? 5. Type "g1f3" in the move box and then press the button that reads "GUESS THE MOVE"? It could be that the problem is triggered by one of these specific move entry methods, which could explain why some people get the problem and others don't. One last thing, we added a timestamp to error page, e.g. <ERROR: Bad game request / You probably want to use the Guess-the-Move Home Page. Mon Apr 16 13:13:35 2012 USA/Eastern> The reason we added that timestamp is because I have a hunch that this whole mess could be triggered by some kind of web cache. So, the next time you get the error, take note of that timestamp and see if it is current. If it shows you a date from a few days ago or even a few hours ago that would speak volumes. |

I can't paste a screenshot here for some reason, but will email them to you in a sec.> I doubt it's a browser issue but it's good you checked. I just signed in under your account (we admins can do that you know) and from my point of view everything worked great. I saw your customized menu on a variety of pages: the homepage, the player of the day (Alan Fraser Truscott), and some tournaments I clicked on. <all> Does anybody ELSE have this problem, of enhanced menus not appearing on player/tournament pages? |

 | | chessgames.com: HMS:
I understand now. The pages that you are referring to fit into the same category as the help page: they are just plain HTML pages that necessarily look the same to everybody. So you have noticed a small shortcoming but it's not a bug. Conceivably one day we could make those pages customizable as well, but for now I'm just glad to learn that nothing is broken. |

| Apr-16-12 | | MarkFinan: Hi <chessgames>, and thanks for the Info..
In answer to your question, I'll type "Nf3" and then press GTM ?
It's no problem anyway, its most likely my phone like you say, but i just noticed something Annie said thats just happened to me right now.
I'll get out of the opening where there's no moves to guess, play a move or two, then i won't even have the option to type another move, it kind of reverts back to the opening book moves so you just have to press GTM as there's no box to type your move in!
I don't know why that is, and i really am useless at anything technology wise, so i'm not complaining for complainings sake, its just to me like computers were only invented 5 or 6 years ago!! And iv'e only recently shown any interest, but i'll soon pick it all up :) I think its a brilliant feature, but it does get a little frustrating, so as long as that link you posted is there then i don't really have a problem right now..
Iv'e got enough browsers, so i really do need a laptop, and i'm guessing i'll have no problems at all then, but i will try it on "Somebody's" computer and if i still have problems then, i'll let you know...
Otherwise, I'm addicted to GTM already, thanks once more |

 | | chessgames.com: <That's not necessarily a bug - it's what happens if the game follows a less popular line for a couple moves and then transposes back into mainstream theory> Perfectly stated. Guess-the-Move doesn't quiz you on opening moves when the Opening Explorer sees thousands of games. Anyhow Mark I do believe there is some kind of bug that you are experiencing, but not necessarily a bug in our software at all. You see, we can't replicate the error through *normal* use of GTM, but we know how to replicate it. It's easy, we just click here http://www.chessgames.com/perl/quiz
Now the question is, why is your browsers requesting that page, even though the HTML never links to that? If we learn what your browser is and why it behaves that way we might crack the case. Did you say it was on a *phone*? |
|
| Apr-16-12 | | MarkFinan: Hi <chessgames> Yes, i did indeed say its a phone, im using it right now, its a nokia c3 which is *kind of* like a snide (cheaper and fake) blackberry, but it does everything a blackberry can do!
Phones seem to run my life nowadays, so i may as well use a phone rather than a computer because they do everything i need them to do anyway.. For the most part.(Apart from GTM!)
Although i will get one this weekend, its way past time i had my own anyway..
And like iv'e already said, im far from a computer expert, but i know exactly what certain computers and phones can do software wise, because iv'e sold/handled enough of them in my time, iv'e just not used most of them!
I think we've just got crossed wires here, because im not saying its your fault.. Im not conplaining either, just letting you know.. And i didn't mean to say you had a software bug, i was just saying what Annie said/Insuated.. That on GTM it can jump back into book moves, even after you've already made OOB moves...
Oh god, I'm turning into AJ lol ;)
No worries, I'll struggle through, I really have been enjoying this site lately |
