  kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com

Whilst the World Chess Championship resource link is great to help me track my own evolution of Chess style series, I am making increasingly heavy use of Olympiad games:

http://www.olimpbase.org/index.html...

This site in particular seems to have the PGNs of the various Olympiads.

I believe these Olympiads show the strongest players of the particular years who are not necessarily world champions or contenders. In the case for example of Alekhine, it is not necessarily true that Bogo... was the best contender. Both Flohr, and Rubinstein come into mind around 1931 if you check the Olympiad performances e.g.

http://www.olimpbase.org/1930/1930i...

Gives you this info:

"

no. name code pts gms %
1. Rubinstein, Akiba POL 15 17 88.2
2. Flohr, Salomon CSR 14½ 17 85.3
3. Kashdan, Isaac USA 14 17 82.4
4. Marshall, Frank James USA 12½ 17 73.5
5.= Havasi, Kornél HUN 12 14 85.7
5.= Tartakower, Ksawery POL 12 16 75.0
5.= Lundin, Erik SWE 12 17 70.6
"

The point here is, and the point of the suggestion is I think the World championships page you have can be shown in parallel to the Olympiads maybe - to get an idea of a year by year basis of the best players of the time. This also of course would help track the evolution of Chess style too, because I think these games were quite widely publicised as well as the World championship related games.

So more concretely it would be nice to have at the bottom of Chessgames.com:

" Player Directory | World Chess Championships ..."

" Player Directory | World Chess Championships | Chess Olympiads..."

Best wishes
K

chessgames.com: <kingscrusher> Chessgames and its staff is ever awed by Olimpbase. It's one of the oldest, most accurate, and most well organized chess resources on the internet. They truly raised the bar on what people expect out of chess sites, and we use their resources all the time.

I like the idea of imitating their work in our own distinct way. It's highly related to what we're working on right now behind the scenes, the forthcoming "Historical Tournament" feature.

Aug-09-12  Jim Bartle: On the Carlsen page the administrators asked that discussion of Wesley So be limited to So's page. That appeal has had limited effect so far.

Several of So's supporters want to convince the rest of us that Carlsen is at the top of the ratings only because of favoritism and "pampering," and by inference that So would be there had he received the same treatment. These kibitzers seem ready to argue this on any page where a related subject comes up.

My suggestion would be to be strict about limiting this discussion to the Wesley So page, and perhaps still to the World Blitz 2012 page where it relates to the non-invites to So, Ponomariov and others.

Aug-09-12  TheFocus: I agree with <MarkFinan> about the Carlsen page. And get them off the Robert Fischer page too.
Aug-09-12  Bureaucrat: I agree with Mark Finan, Jim Bartle and TheFocus. Please don't let those trolls disguised as 'Wesley So fans' trash the Carlsen page, the Fischer page, or any other page they visit.
Aug-09-12  MarkFinan: Good men.. :)

And If <Rogge> <Appaz> <frogbert>and <KKderek> don't feel the same...... I'll be very shocked !

Aug-09-12  rogge: I'm sure I agree, but there seem to be a couple of posts missing :)

chessgames.com: <MarkFinan: <chessgames.com> Can you please tell me when you changed the name of this great site Into "WesleySo'sfanatics.com" ??>

We have received several Whistles (complaints) related to that issue, but none from you. Please do not come here to post a public complaint about specific users or groups of users. We don't allow that any more.

You mention racism in your (now deleted) post but I think that is an exceptional case and not the core problem. If you want to pursue that, please submit a Whistle slip on the specific post and we'll review it. However, the real problem here--we believe--is that people are posting on topics outside of the stated page subject.

For instance, recently we've seen posts on Carlsen's page were really about Wesley So, with the only apparent reason for the post being there is the fact that Carlsen has the highest FIDE rating and Wesley So doesn't.

Not long before that, we saw a number of posts on the World Blitz Championship which mentioned Wesley So. Why was this relevant? Apparently because Wesley was NOT playing in it.

Of course, these are not valid interpretations of what we regard as "on topic" for these pages.

We assume such behavior annoys people, and if our members point it out to us, we'll delete posts or groups of posts that are off-topic. We do it all the time. And as you know, when we delete too many posts from the same person then they are identified as an "egregious violator" and they get put on kibitzing probation.

However it's CRITICAL that you use the official channels (the Whistle link) to submit your complaint about it. If you engage off-topic posters on the same pages that they are polluting, or on this page, then you end up simply contributing to the pollution. Thank you.

Aug-09-12  MarkFinan: <CG> If you *really* believe thats the only problem with those guys then you'll never stop them posting..

They dont even love chess, they just love a chess player! Its that simple!

And I don't blow whistles..

Anyway, thanks for your help.

Aug-09-12  Jim Bartle: How about just a quick line saying "Reply on the Wesley So" page, and then posting there? I've done that, but then get little response there. Seems some of these guys want to dominate other pages.
Aug-09-12  Bureaucrat: <We have received several Whistles (complaints) related to that issue>

Why, then, have you taken no action?

Aug-09-12  Bureaucrat: To add to my previous post. You wrote: <We assume such behavior annoys people, and if our members point it out to us, we'll delete posts or groups of posts that are off-topic. We do it all the time.>

Yet, in this case it seems that despite several whistles, not a single off-topic post has been deleted. So how does blowing the whistle help? Perhaps it is because blowing the whistle leads nowhere that the issue has been brought to this forum?

Aug-10-12  achieve: I agree with <Bureaucrat> that on many occasions in the past, the Blowing the Whistle "tool" has not worked, or late, but on occasion there was reasonable speed and proportionality to admin action. However, clearly it does not work satisfactorily, and that is the opinion of many users, including myself, after some 6-7 years of experience on this site. (Note that I <am> aware of the staff's limitations, also relating to the impossibility to please all members, or uphold a "perfect" record even if one wishes to.)

As you may know, webmaster, I haven't attributed more than one post, if at all, there (Carlsen page), one of my favorite pages these days, but imagining a new member wishing to read about Carlsen, or the world blitz 2012, and his reaction to observing a streetfight of over 70 pages, I would be embarrassed to be the "master" having "a" responsability also pertaining to that part of "my web." Don't view this as coming down on you, you know of the amount of respect I carry for your efforts to keep the site hospitable and civil, and chessgames.com really shines when compared to most large websites containing massive amounts of traffic. Just as a reminder and to put it in perspective.

You rightly point out that simply not engaging in debate may offer a solution, but still, people are forced to use an ignore function, I say <forced>, because the actual <player page> is being ruined, and it has become unreadable. Those engaging with the "fanatics" are mostly people with whom I enjoy talking, but having to put some of them on ignore as well because of the endless So pseudo debate, or class warfare in drag, is not my idea of fun.

What I request of you is both explanation and action, and within a reasonable timeframe as well, which in essence, means an improved "Whistle Functionality". The different timezones we all live in should not interfere to too significant an extent.

Why write this down and post here, instead of emailing you, which is the proper action in most of these issues?

Because I want to "support" the "members" who have voiced their opinions and frustration and urgent "call", here, after all at the Member Support Forum. Reviewing the functionality, effectiveness, of your Whistle function, is just one of the things to think about in relation to the recent eruptions, and the Members' frustration in their apparent inability to take action, and see action taken.

Thanks - and here's to working this out efficiently. :)

Aug-10-12  Alien Math: Think <achieve> gather the words well,

Many times have to travel pages for next games of, interviews found, also new blog post from players pages.

Wonder to post toward here about thoughts of many player pages have same argument or whistle page use?

Aug-10-12  Dr. Pipit Wagtail: Hi. <CG> Thank you for all the work you do to make this a great site.

I find that often when following members' analysis and thoughts on games and game positions that I benefit from moving the pieces on the board in the game window. When finished, I reload the game from the server to get the game back to its original state click to another post of interest, follow another line of thought moving the pieces in the game window again if I must, and again reload the game when finished with that line.

Perhaps others do this as well.

With games that generate many complex and deep lines of analysis a feature like "freeze panes" as found in database programs might allow members (well ok, me then) to explore contributers ideas without having to scroll up to the game window then down to the kibitzing section again to find the idea's continuation... where was it again... after those... no... oh, here!... now up again to the game window, move the pieces... very clever... interesting... now scroll back down again away from the game window to the continuation... no not that... where was it?... what was the move number again?... Drat!

A "freeze panes" just below the game window, and a "game reset" capability built into pages might make it easier to follow and investigate members' ideas. I appreciate that screen space is limited, but with "freeze panes" a member could play through analysis without losing the game window, reset the game when finished, scroll below the frozen game window and follow another kibitzers' line, clicking to the desired board position.

I imagine many members open second and third boards in other programs and multiple windows to work through ideas presented on the game pages, and I have done and do so myself; however, setting up positions over and over can become time consuming and vexing, and when using devices with small screens or on-screen keyboards, it becomes, at least for me, a limiting factor.

Anyway, it's a thought.

chessgames.com: <Dr. Pipit> It took me a minute to figure out what you are suggesting, but then I got the idea. By "freeze pane" you are referring to a relatively modern HTML trick in which part of the webpage does not scroll while the rest of the page does.

You probably know that Chess Viewer Deluxe (see official page http://chesstuff.blogspot.com/2008/...) offers very sophisticated methods for exploring your own variations. <In a complex game, things can get really messy when you branch several levels deep inside several variations. Well, they won't if you are using Chess Viewer Deluxe. You will always have a clear idea of the exact game path and an easy way to navigate back to any branching point. I don't know about professional players but for a casual/average player (like me) this is a great help.>

However, that doesn't solve the problem of somebody suggesting a variation on the bottom of the page while you are fiddling with the top of the page. You scroll up and down and back again until your eyes are boucing around. You have my sympathies, I recognize this problem on a regular basis.

I know that sometimes Chessgames users open two windows to the same game at the same time, put them side by side, and then use the top of one page to explore a variation while reading the kibitzing on the other side. A crude answer that suggests that something might be better designed.

The old HTML technique of "frames" could solve the problem as well, but I'm not sure which one is more universally loathed: frames or freeze-panes? In either case, we could conceivably offer it as a preference setting, so that people who want to use it can give it a try. Thanks for your opinion.

chessgames.com: <Bureaucrat: Why, then, have you taken no action?> As I've been trying to explain, we are taking quite a bit of action. Consider the possibility that there are posts which have been removed by admins of which you are blissfully unaware, simply because the admins are that good.

I'd also like to add that your own posts have not been entirely on-topic themselves, at least not on the Magnus Carlsen page. Don't feed the trolls, please.

Achieve, you are indeed one of the oldest and most respected users and I agree with you that the "effectiveness" of the Whistle function varies greatly depending on many factors.

<What I request of you is both explanation and action, and within a reasonable timeframe as well, which in essence, means an improved "Whistle Functionality".>

We can't promise that overnight but I can say that it is certainly an ideal to strive for.

I've contemplated a more organized system in which each complaint slip gets dealt with one way or another (a possibility is that no action is taken, for a specific stated reason) but in any case the result of the complaint is then automatically emailed to the member who issued it.

I also believe however that you have to have be realistic of what to expect. People will be jerks. Sometimes perfectly sane conversations will be interrupted by somebody that "doesn't have both oars in the water." No amount of posting policies or administration will change that fact of life. Our admins can intervene and try to delete posts and create the illusion that nothing ever happened, but that's not always the best way to deal with the problem.

Aug-10-12  Bureaucrat: I notice that a lot has now been done to sanitise the Carlsen page. Thanks.
Aug-11-12  achieve: <CG> Thanks for your reply, and I have complete faith in your capacity to handle (and perhaps improve on-) weeding the occasional invasive movements around this place.

<I also believe however that you have to have be realistic of what to expect. People will be jerks. Sometimes perfectly sane conversations will be interrupted by somebody that "doesn't have both oars in the water." No amount of posting policies or administration will change that fact of life.> In other words, develop a somewhat thicker skin, be patient, and don't obsess with silliness of gargantuan proportions. You have a point there...

However, being academically trained to become a Physician, I can assure you that the surgeon's adage, or motto: "Get in, fix it, get out", has its preferable uses on occasion.

Thanks for the action that is being taken, and you guys (and girls) enjoy your weekend. :)
