 | | WannaBe: <CG.com> I am just curious, is there any possible way, to add a second check box, on the ignore list, such that any IP address (class D) can also be ignored? Example, if Joe Smith is logging in from 1.2.3.88 and I want to ignore everyone from 1.2.3.X (??) |

 | | WannaBe: <CG.com> I have an interesting question, sometimes when I paste non-english characters into the text box, it shows correctly. (I presume this is done on the browser side copy/paste internally). Once I select pre-view, it shows up as garbage (e.g. Chinese, Japanese), other times it shows up as Unicode's html code (e.g. Hindi). Is this done by the/my browser? Or is it a setting on CG.com's server side? IE v9. Windooooze VII Ultimate, with multi-language support (Chinese/Japanese/English). |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> I second Wannabe's query about nonstandard characters, Unicode, etc. Does it matter exactly where the character is pasted from (eg, another CG post, word doc, etc) ... ? |

 | | chessgames.com: <WannaBe> brings up two interesting technical points. First: <sometimes when I paste non-english characters into the text box, it shows correctly. (I presume this is done on the browser side copy/paste internally).
Once I select pre-view, it shows up as garbage (e.g. Chinese, Japanese), other times it shows up as Unicode's html code (e.g. Hindi). Is this done by the/my browser? Or is it a setting on CG.com's server side?> That's a tough one to answer. Unicode is tricky business and I can't promise we do Unicode perfectly. Not long ago somebody pointed out a bug which occurred due to a combination of our enforced word-wrapping system when combined with moderately long Russian words. I believe we fixed that bug, but it doesn't preclude the possibility of their being other Unicode bugs. That being said, other software might not do it perfectly either. So it's possible that where you copied it from has something to do with how well it pastes into the browser. If I had to guess, I'd say that probably CG is mangling your Unicode, but I'd have to see the actual input and output string and experiment with it to be 100% sure. |

 | | chessgames.com: <About IP Address Blocks> Wannabe wants to know, is there any possible way, to add a second check box, on the ignore list, such that any IP address (class D) can also be ignored? Likewise Jim Bartle asked if we could announce publicly which users were sock-puppets of which other users. The answer is basically "no", if not for technical reasons then certainly for policy reasons. Let me tell you a story which might shed light on why we think it would be a bad policy: Not long ago we were trying to monitor a well known sock-puppet offender by seeing which accounts shared the same IP address. Let's just call him "B" (for "bad boy"). To my great surprise one of our oldest and most respected posters showed up on the list. Let's call him "A" (for "Angel".) Now I know A couldn't possibly be the mastermind behind B and his army of sock-puppets, but there it was in black and white--they both used the same IP address. What on earth was going on? Do they know each other in real life? Do they share the same library or university? Had B stolen A's cellphone? I sent a polite and very non-accusatory email to "A" to try to figure out what the situation was. The answer was simple: you see, "A" likes to visit Chessgames every now and then from work (on his free time of course) but their firewall is configured so that no site with the word "games" in it can be accessed. To get around this, he uses a free proxy service. So while "A" used the proxy service for innocent reasons, at the same time "B" used the very same service for somewhat nefarious reasons. And they ended up with the same IP addresses by sheer coincidence. Now we have other tricks up our sleeves than simply looking at IP addresses, and this corroborated A's explanation. (But we're not going to talk about those techniques, for the same reason the military doesn't brag about all the clever tricks their spies use.) So getting back to your request(s): we fear that if we put such power in the hands of members they would start to draw half-cocked conclusions based on IP addresses. On top of that is a giant cloud of privacy issues. So, sorry, we just don't think it's a good idea. |

 | | WannaBe: <CG.com> Re: Class D IP blocking: Cool with me, thanks for the explanation. (Actually a simply 'NO' would suffice. =) Unicode: Here is what I did,
1. go to Google Translate: http://translate.google.com/ 2. Type some English on the left hand side.
3. Select Chinese/Japanese as your target
4. Copy the translation to a kibitz box. (It should show up exactly the same) 5. Select 'Kibitz' and it will get mangled.
Repeat steps, except select Hindi as your target, and try that. |

Isn't that a half-cocked conclusion on your part as well? |

Did you put me on ignore? My question was buried a page or two down. Did I kibitz if you ignored it? Now this is already a question of philosophy, which I find boring and populated by people I don't understand. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Pulo y Gata> I'm sorry, I read your previous post here but wasn't sure if you were serious. You wrote <Would you enlighten me and tell me why two of my recent posts, which I believe did not violate any posting guidelines, were deleted from here and the Tata Steel A thread?> Are you referring to the post where you called another user an ignoramus and then discussed the flammable nature of human flatulence? If you honestly don't know why that violates our posting guidelines please email chess@chessgames.com and I'll be happy to explain it to you. |

 | | chessgames.com: <WannaBe> It seems to work on my browser. Once I paste in Chinese, it does appear rather odd in the editing box, turning the hanzi (is that the word?) into ____ type codes, but the final output is legible on my screen. That's a Safari running on an iMac, haven't tested it on any other machine. The behavior might be platform dependent. |
