| Mar-14-13 | | DcGentle: <WannaBe>: No rating is not a problem, "any" means no rating as well, and if the user selects a rating, then the game will not be delivered, because there is no match. |

 | | WannaBe: <DcGentle> So, if I select >2400 I may miss games by Morphy... |
|
| Mar-14-13 | | DcGentle: <WannaBe>: Well possible, but if it boils down to quality opening games, you have to take into account, that Morphy maybe is not up-to-date anymore. ;-) |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: One would miss high-quality CC and computer games, though. And CG's rating information is pretty patchy, so even many modern GM games would fail to show up... That said, the idea's still worth thinking about :-) |
|
| Mar-14-13 | | hms123: <DcGentle> I am glad you gave it a try. SCID is really good at db management. You can also install engines if you wish. Nonetheless, I use the Fritz interface for engine analysis. |

| Mar-14-13 | | DcGentle: Well, I used <hms123>'s method to find all Modern Alekhine Defense games with g6, where White won and Black had an ELO > 2700. Instead of 644 games with all results and all ratings, SCID found only <6> games with this restriction. And all these 6 games were rather interesting. And by the way, only 2 headers of these 6 games contained the ELO of the players. So SCID got this information elsewhere. And what SCID can do, <chessgames.com> can do as well, I guess. :-) |
|
| Mar-14-13 | | DcGentle: <hms123>: Scid is good, I knew about it before, but didn't really use it. Anyways. Thanks for the hint. ;-) |
|
| Mar-14-13 | | DcGentle: And another unrelated info: The Alekhine defense is underrated. But you have to know what you do there, playing as Black. Then you have good chances. |

 | | chessgames.com: The idea of screening by rating is a good one but it presents various technical challenges. Our justification of why it's not a critical addition to the site is that we already have a game-quality policy, so the number of amateur games in the database should be sufficiently low as to not skew the statistics. That's not to say it wouldn't be handy. It might be best as one of the "REFINE SEARCH:" features alongside 1-0, 0-1, etc. The problem with such searches missing out on players like Morphy isn't a huge issue as most of the "big" players already have special database ratings of 9000. These ratings don't show up as such but they are used behind the scenes, when we do things like figure out which players are important enough to be given a Happy Birthday on the homepage, or which players appear on the pulldown menu. A bit off topic but I also happen to agree that 1.e4 Nf6 is underrated. Hans Berliner only lost with it twice, both times to Bobby Fischer. |

<AuN1: early on i predicted we'd get to a hundred pages before a single game was played. it looks like we're right on track.> World Championship Candidates (2013) Thanks for opening it as early as you did. |

 | | Tabanus: Hi <GC> This picture: http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/img... is probably the only online one of Harry Davidson. Can you use it? It's taken from the online version of American Chess Bulletin 1905 (p. 102), here: http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?... According to <Phony Benoni>, exactly the same picture is used in the not online 1905 November issue of ACB, and there correctly labeled "Harry Davidson". |

Mar-17-13
 | | Tabanus: Thanks Daniel and <<CG>>! Philadelphia (1876) is getting squeekier clean, we're almost there but I guess not all games can be found. |
|
| Mar-17-13 | | crawfb5: <Tabanus> The only game not in Philadelphia (1876) that is in the tournament book is already in the database: J Elson vs H Davidson, 1876. Elison-Davidson was not available in time for publication in the tournament book. |

| Mar-17-13 | | Tiggler: cg.com: I guess there is no one on duty Sunday night? Please take a look at the garbage on the WC Candidates page. Sheesh! |
|
| Mar-17-13 | | The Last Straw: Anyone want to team up with me, register at or use existing accounts to go to chess.com, find titled players over there and tell them about chessgames? If it's fine with Daniel and Alberto, please post in this forum. |

Mar-18-13
 | | Tabanus: <crawfb5> Thanks, it's there now. So all games in the tournament book are now in Philadelphia (1876)? That would mean Mason has 15 out of 16 games there, Davidson 16 of 16 (after Henry and Harry is merged), Judd 13 of 14, Bird, Elson, Roberts, Ware and Barbour 14 of 14 games, and Martinez 4 of 4 games. Leaving only one game missing: Mason (White) vs Judd (Black). |
|
| Mar-18-13 | | crawfb5: <Tabanus> Correct. Everything in the tournament book is there. Apparently Mason-Judd was unplayed, due to Judd being ill (http://www.chessarch.com/excavation...). The crosstable in the tournament book shows it as a draw, but it was their last game and would have only affected the standings if Judd had won. |

 | | Tabanus: <crawfb5> Thanks. I have posted a new crosstable to the Bistro, for consideration. |

 | | FSR: You seem to have gotten much more up to date with adding submitted games to the database, and also in not having your software reject them for reasons known only to it. Good job! One thing, though - I wish you would add the last 31 moves in Adams vs D Lemos, 2011, namely 54. Rf5 Re6 55. Kg4 Kg7 56. R8f7+ Kg6 57. Rd7 Bc6 58. Rxg5+ Kf6 59. Rf5+ Kg6 60. Rg5+ Kf6 61. Rf5+ Kg6 62. Rd3 e4 63. Re3 Bd7 64. Rg5+ Kf6 65.f4 Re5+ 66. Kh4 Re8 67. Kg3 Bf5 68. Ra3 Re6 69. Kf2 Rd6 70. Ra5 Bg6 71. Rgb5 Bh7 72. f5 Kg5 73. Ke3 Rf6 74. Kxe4 Rxf5 75. Rxf5+ Kg4 76. Ke5 Bxf5 77. Ra4+ Kg5 78. Ra1 Bc2 79. Re1 Bd3 80. Rg1+ Kh6 81. Kf6 Kh7 82. Rg3 Bb1 83. Rh3+ Kg8 84. Rh2 Bh7 1/2-1/2. Those moves appear in the version of the game at Mega Database 2012, and also at http://www.365chess.com/game.php?gi.... I submitted a correction slip on February 8. The position after Black's 75th move is a rare and wonderful one, normally seen only in endgame studies: click for larger view Although White has two rooks, and Black only a bishop, the position is a draw! If White temporizes with Rb5-c5-d5-e5-a5, Black does the same with Bg6-h7. This is the <only> position in Mega Database 2013 (with about 5.5 million games) where one bishop draws against two rooks. There are currently <no> such positions in chessgames.com's database. Endgame Explorer: B vs RR Please add the missing moves! |
