| Jun-30-13 | | Whitehat1963: Hi, <CG.Com>, this game is dying to be placed in the Guess-the-Move database, please: A E Blackmar vs A Lapeyre, 1882 |

 | | Stonehenge: Something funny happens in the OE with short games ending with mate. After e.g. 1. f4 e6 2. g4 Qh4# try clicking on 'back-up'. |
|
Jul-01-13
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Happens to me too; it seems the presence of the character # in the URL makes the back-up button malfunction. |
|

 | | chessgames.com: < the presence of the character # > That's exactly what it is. We have special code to take care of the plus-sign and equal-sign characters but forgot about the possibility of a very early checkmate. And since the hash-mark (#) has a very special meaning in URLs it causes everything to go bonkers. Thanks for pointing this out. |

| Jul-01-13 | | The Last Straw: Hi <chessgames.com> Wang Yue will be replacing Radjabov in the Beijing Grand Prix. Please update the home page. Thank you. |

 | | Annie K.: <cg: <Here you may [...] notify us of problems/bugs>> & <The Last Straw: <Wang Yue will be replacing Radjabov[...]>> In Soviet Russia - no, wait, in chessgames.com - bugs notify you... And <Switch> solves yet another mystery. Ho hum. ;) |

 | | chessgames.com: <Wang Yue will be replacing Radjabov> Oh, thanks. <Annie K.> LOL |

 | | Domdaniel: But should the character '#' be called 'hash' or 'octothorpe' ...? |
|
Jul-02-13
 | | WannaBe: <Domdaniel> In U.S., they are often called 'Pound Sign', not to be confused with the British currency. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pound... |

 | | Peligroso Patzer: The last round games of the 8th Edmonton International (2013) have not yet been posted to the CG games database. They are available here: http://edmonton-international.com/G.... Also, the link for this event in the "New Games" panel on the left side of the homepage refers to Bruzon's (traditional) final score as 7/8. It was actually 8/9. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Wannabe> I'd actually read that wiki entry on '#' in the last few minutes ... apart from its multiple names (pound sign, number sign, hash, octothorpe, etc.) it's amazing how many distinct meanings the character has, eg in maths and computing. |

 | | WannaBe: <Domdaniel> Every once in a while, I have to use 'tic-tac-toe sign' to describe what I mean to people. |
|
Jul-02-13
 | | chessgames.com: <Peligroso Patzer> Thanks much. Our mistake--we had read that Bruzon won the event and concluded that the tournament was over. Of course the fact is he won the tournament with a round to spare allowing journalists to declare a winner early. |

 | | Annie K.: <cg> who is responsible for today's outstanding pun (Drawn and Quartered), plz? Just very curious... :) |
|
| Jul-03-13 | | Abdel Irada: <...apart from its multiple names (pound sign, number sign, hash, octothorpe, etc.) it's amazing how many distinct meanings the character has, eg in maths and computing.> This is true of many articles of punctuation.
The symbol "/", for example, is called a slash, a diagonal, a virgule.... ∞ |
|
| Jul-03-13 | | Abdel Irada: I had not known this. Speaking of the slash, it appears that it exists in different forms, which if properly typeset do not look alike. The solidus, for example, is more horizontal than an ordinary slash or stroke, and a virgule is thinner. Fascinating article on the subject: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slash_.... ∞ |

| Jul-03-13 | | Karpova: Am I the only one to experience the chessgames.com website not functioning properly today (builds up extremely slowly and incomplete)? |
|
| Jul-03-13 | | The Last Straw: <Karpova> It was happening to me earlier today, but now it seems okay. |

 | | chessgames.com: I think we had some DNS problem earlier. I can see http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com in our top referrer list for the day. We are looking into it now. <Annie> Credit for "Drawn and Quartered" goes to User: sleepyirv. |

 | | Annie K.: Thanks <cg> - very good pun, that one. :) |
|
| Jul-03-13 | | PinnedPiece: < WannaBe: <Domdaniel> In U.S., they are often called 'Pound Sign', not to be confused with the British currency.> Nor confused with 'pound sand' either!

 | | Tabanus: <Karpova: Am I the only one> No! It's the same problem in Norway (or is it just me), both yesterday and right now. |
|
| Jul-04-13 | | Karpova: The problems I have with <chessgames.com> are still persisting and this is the only webpage affected. The site builds up slowly and incompletely (right and bottom bands at last if at all). Today it was as bad as yesterday though at the moment it is okay - slower than usual but at least the site works for me. But it may get worse again. |

 | | chessgames.com: <The problems I have with <chessgames.com> are still persisting> There was a problem on our DNS server that was fixed about 36 hours ago. Nameserver data propagates across the globe so it's possible that some people are still having problems, but these problems should go away on their own accord. |
