| Aug-09-13 | | DcGentle: <Annie K. <In my above example, searching for 'sac' here on cg, will not give you posts where the full word "sacrifice" appears>> Hi!
I entered on the Search Kibitzing form the following:
sac user:dcgentle
and got this link ->
morfishine chessforum
among other results.
Quoting from there:
"I am considering to take this game into my jewel collection of positional masterworks. I have to study the whole game a bit closer. The queen <sac> is an exceptional positional <sac>rifice, and current engines have problems to find it, no wonder." As you can see, "sacrifice" was found.
What I am missing is a general introduction to the <Search kibitzing> page, because my suspicion is, that there was an update of the search algorithm but no update of the help page for the new features. If someone is wondering, I can even search for all my own messages which are ignored by others, whether this makes sense or not. But no help page will tell you how this is done. ;-) Ģ |

 | | Annie K.: <DcGentle> There was no recent update. The autofill is a feature of your browser, not the site's search function. :) (Incidentally, that browser feature may be very helpful, but it can also slow down browser performance considerably, once those remembered lists get very long, so you may want to think twice about enabling it...) And that post with 'sacrifice' in it was only found because the word 'sac' is in the post <as well>. The highlighting algorithm finds both, but the search wouldn't have found it if 'sac' weren't also in there, just as it hadn't found thousands of other posts with the full word 'sacrifice' in them. Do a separate search for 'sacrifice' and compare. This is exactly what we have been discussing here with cg. |

And Sarah Beth's cg.com address here:

 | | Annie K.: <cg: <Second, it's a trick distinguishing between merely having opened the page and actually going through the game. Not impossible, but it would take some finesse.>> Yeah - with particular attention to the fact that many of us may indeed open hundreds of game pages without actually going through the games, sometime in December of every year... ;) so this isn't a marginal issue. :) |

| Aug-09-13 | | Alien Math: <jessicafischerqueen> Thank you, have find her blog some while before, a nice bonus her here also ^.^ |

| Aug-09-13 | | TheFocus: I have been a long-time fan of <Batgirl>. She is one of the finest researchers in chess history. |
|
| Aug-09-13 | | TheFocus: I just looked at <Batgirl>'s blog and viewed the Nellie Showalter - Harriet Worrall match games. Too bad they are not here. Have to remedy that. When I get them in, I will cover their match and give credit to <Batgirl> for her research. I have copied a link to her blog in my profile so i don't forget it. |

| Aug-10-13 | | DcGentle: <Annie K.>: Thanks, I see. I wasn't aware of the difference between the highlighting algorithm and the search algorithm. Dear <chessgames.com>, Nevertheless I would be thankful for a general user-friendly introduction to the <Search Kibitzes> page, because I still don't know how to search for a posting with a specific date. Is this possible at all or not? |

 | | WCC Editing Project: Good afternoon.
Pardon me for barging in. Long time listener, first time caller. <DcGentle>, <Annie> I'm impressed that both of you know what the word "algorithm" means. <DcGentle> I recently read a few Wikipedia articles based on your recent posts about the <Fibonacci Word>. I felt sad to be so "maths-impaired" that I could not understand the definition. |
|
| Aug-10-13 | | DcGentle: <WCC Editing Project>: Hi there! I'll address these questions on your forum, if you don't mind. :-) |

 | | chessgames.com: <Nevertheless I would be thankful for a general user-friendly introduction to the <Search Kibitzes> page, because I still don't know how to search for a posting with a specific date. Is this possible at all or not?> Date searching is not supported at this time, although the results are reverse-chronological so you can (clumsily) scan the pages to get to the portion you want. Sorry there's nothing better at this time. As far as a help page goes: it's long overdue. The original Search Kibtizing was so simple it needed no help page, then we added some features, and failed to add a help page. There are clues to the advanced features that show up in the "TIP: ____" area, but I promise we'll get a proper help page for it soon. |

<date searching> I have found the best way is to make a guess as to which page number I will find the post, go to that page, and then start using an averaging algorithm. As an example, if the total number of pages for a search is 100, I might go to page 50, then to 25, then to 37, etc. Of course, more educated guesses make this work pretty quickly. It is way faster than simply scanning each page. |

 | | WannaBe: <nescio> posted on Xue Zhao's page, that she was in HZ chess tournament http://www.hztoernooi.nl/hz/index.p... And if you click on 'Games' on the left hand side, you should see Rounds 1 to 9, then the PGNs can be downloaded (zip format). But in the PGNs, the male/female are lumped together, but the tournament had male/female section. So, I am not sure if it's too much pain to separate them out. |

You seem to be missing several games from the <2004 AEROFLOT OPEN>. For example, I cannot find the game <CARLSEN VS YAKOVICH>. Thanks

| Aug-11-13 | | nescio: <WannaBe: [...]But in the PGNs, the male/female are lumped together, but the tournament had male/female section.> Where did you read this? There were no male or female sections, in fact _all_ the players (about 250) were in one large group. I think that is a problem in itself because the PGN file will contain many games by weak players, and selecting the master games is a lot of work. |

| Aug-12-13 | | Blunderdome: Yay on the links at World Cup (2013)! You do realize we're going to demand this for every tournament from now on? |

 | | Annie K.: Hey, kewl! =)
I've been meaning to ask for such links on tourney pages for years, but somehow never got around to it. :D |
