chessgames.com: <the earliest submissions, the latest submission, or is the selection made at random?> It's a "proprietary formula" that uses a biased random selection. Any pun might be selected, but it prefers to show you a pun with very few votes, and/or a pun with a fairly high score.

By the way, perhaps you noticed we recently opened up the limit of pun submissions. We hadn't realized so many people were capped. We really should purge the list of some of the stuff that apparently is a flop. If we ever do that we'll be sure to put the rejects on a special page so people can scour through it for overlooked gems.

chancho: <chessgames.com> I've noticed lately that whenever I press the delete button to edit a post, it says the post is deleted.

But then when I repost, I get a message saying please do not to flood the forum.

I check and see the post I supposedly deleted still there.

You say you delete posts and then they are still there? Really? I was at first going to suggest that you accidentally missed the <Check here to confirm deletion> button but then it wouldn't say <Message deleted.>

Question: do you currently find yourself completely unable to delete messages, or do repeated attempts finally work in deleting it? Or is this something that just crops up occasionally?

chessgames.com: <Thanh Phan> If you see a page that shows posts you know should be on your ignore list, scroll to the bottom where it says <Do you have a comment, Thanh Phan? Post it here!>. I say this because I want to make sure you are actually signed into the website on the page you see the problem. The simplest explanation is that you are not signed into your new browser, and/or your new browser is tripping you up with a cache.

The remedy in that case would be to sign-in, and/or clear your cache or press refresh on the pages in question.

chancho: I check marked the confirm deletion on the above post I sent to this forum, pressed delete, went back to my original post on preview kibitz, edited, and when I pressed post kibitz, it gave me the do not flood forum message again.

Aug-26-13  Karpova: <chessgames.com>

<Thanh Phan> was quoting a post by <LMAJ> who has the habit of ending a streak of his offensive posts by claiming to have put his victim on ignore (same applies to people who do not worship him like a god).

Yet, he winds up answering to the posts of the ignored users anyway - so two explanations are offered: either a friend e-mailed him about the ignored post or somehow the cookies aren't accepted. This happens so often though, that one wonders how <LMAJ> can actually log in to <chessgames.com> at all (in addition to the all-pervading question why he can).

It's probably not a software problem but merely a proof for his courage in starting a fight and immediately ending it by denying his victim the possibility to answer to him directly, thereby winning convincingly and demonstrating his superiority once more.

<chessgames.com: No other administrative measures were taken.>

Thanks for re-emphasizing.

chessgames.com: <<Thanh Phan> was quoting a post by <LMAJ>> Sorry for being dense; I finally figured that out. Of course, it's not a software issue.
Aug-26-13  Thanh Phan: <chessgames> Partly my fault, I should have looked further and provided the full quote for easier reference,

I am glad you were able to find out it wasn't a software issue, Thank you

Aug-27-13  Shams: Feature Request: Is it possible to have FEN diagrams where you could place an 'x' in the notation in place of a numeral or a piece/pawn/king/queen designation, such that a big 'X' would appear on a square?

Ideally you could even have an 'x' appear behind a piece or a pawn. This functionality would allow beginners to easily see how many squares, occupied or not, a very active piece would control.

Aug-27-13  twinlark: Hi ceegee.

I notice some of the links such as to the FIDE player card on each player page automatically opens a new tab.

This is quite handy, even if it is simply a matter of an extra click to open in another tab or window in any case.

Have you considered setting it up such that any links to off the site will automatically open in another tab, including links posted by members in the normal course of kibitzing?

Or is it just easier to leave it to members to simply go that extra click?

It's probably a trivial question given how easy it is to open a link in another tab or window, but I'm curious.

Aug-28-13  twinlark: A query for you on a more substantial note: Biographer Bistro
Aug-28-13  twinlark: Forget the last; the issue has become irrelevant.

chessgames.com: <Is it possible to have FEN diagrams ... such that a big 'X' would appear on a square?> This idea had occurred to us years ago, and we event attempted to implement the feature but got mired in technical details of constructing the graphics. We still like the idea, though.

<I notice some of the links such as to the FIDE player card on each player page automatically opens a new tab. This is quite handy...> People have mixed opinions on that feature. In a way it's sort of selfish, as if to say "if you are clicking to an outside site, surely it must be a temporary need and you'll be back to CG shortly."

Our general rule is that we open a new window in situation where we truly believe that the user only wants to temporarily visit the external site. Checking out somebody's FIDE card is a good example.

But in cases of kibitzing links, it's not really our position to speculate on the nature of the link. So there we thought it best to leave it up to the user.

Re: <Biographer Bistro / the year 2000 constraint> That was always intended to be temporary. Now that we are very confident about the Tournament Index and how it operates we should consider relaxing that requirement.

Tabanus: <cg> In the Tournament Index, instead of only one line to start with:

[1843-1893] [1893-1905] [1905-1914] [1915-1927] [1927-1937],

why not all at once? Something like this:

[1843-1893] [1893-1905] [1905-1914] [1915-1927] [1927-1937] [1937-1951] [1952-1961] [1961-1970] [1970-1980] [1981-1997] [1997-2003] [2003] [2003/04] [2004/05] [2005]

chessgames.com: <Tabanus: <cg> In the Tournament Index, instead of only one line to start with ... why not all at once?> If we had all at once it would be at least three times bigger than your illustration, and since the page keeps getting larger it would eventually become unwieldy. However, to include 3 lines instead of just 1 is a fine idea.

I now see you have 1538 tournaments and matches! Not bad, and there is more to come.

Aug-30-13  MarkFinan: During live games my "favourite kibitzers" mode doesn’t work. Im not complaining or anything because i dont even recall putting certain people on my favoueites, Its just i noticed today and thought id let you know. And a few week back I posted here Inquiring about a chessgames.com app, but you never replied to me, but now ive just got an iphone I think it would be really helpful for people who log on with phones. Its a bit of a drag to have to use the old google search everytime i visit, when if they was an icon on my home screen it would be quicker. And surely its a good thing from a financial perspective through advertisment alone, as when someone goes to download a chess app, ANY chess app, they’d see your site logo and i can tell you from experience that anyone who loves playing chess will generally download all the free apps and only later, once they’ve checked them all out, delete the rubbish and keep the good. For chess, this is the best site on the WWW for everything *but* actually playing it, and 9/10 people would keep the app installed, therefore getting more business by word of mouth alone.. You can thank me when you’re a multi millionaire, Daniel. ;)

chessgames.com: <MarkFinan: During live games my "favourite kibitzers" mode doesn’t work. Im not complaining or anything because i dont even recall putting certain people on my favoueites, Its just i noticed today and thought id let you know.> Could you explain exactly what doesn't work? Favorites-mode makes it so that you only see people in your favorites list. So if you don't have anybody in your favorites list, the "favorites mode ON" feature simply will appear to wipe out all kibitzing.

By the way, when you use the live page, are you in "mobile mode"? ( Mobile mode has a simplified header that looks like this: http://www.chessgames.com/chessimag... )

<MarkFinan: Can you please tell me why i had 3 posts from the Argue page deleted??> Please ask your question via email, and I will explain.

Aug-30-13  Kinghunt: Could we get a tournament page up for nTCEC Season 2? Official site here: http://www.tcec-chess.net/

It's the unofficial computer chess world championship, split into five stages. Last year's edition was really entertaining and produced a lot of quality games. That said, if you would rather keep tournament pages for human events only, I quite understand.
