| Nov-14-13 | | LIFE Master AJ: You did not answer my question.
Will the app be blocked in the next release of Java? Is only the basic version (of the replay board) guaranteed to work? What's the deal? I have heard of "site exceptions," could one be granted here? |

 | | chessgames.com: <Will the app be blocked in the next release of Java?> It's possible. <Is only the basic version guaranteed to work?> You mean pgn4web, and yes that's the only viewer we have guaranteed to work in the future. This article paints a bleak but accurate picture: http://threatpost.com/javas-losing-... |

 | | Annie K.: <...and GM Williams will have to leave after 3-4 hours.> Please remember to "release" the latest kibitz window under the board when he does, so we don't have to look at an outdated comment for the rest of the game. :) |

 | | chessgames.com: <"release" the latest kibitz window> It's actually on a 30 minute timer now, so it should self-release. Clever huh? |

| Nov-15-13 | | LIFE Master AJ: Thank you for answering my question.
IMO, the basic viewer is extremely ugly (and hard to use) ... maybe we will all be using it in the future. (What a shame!) I had long known about the problems with Java. About 5 years ago, I had a local client with a small business. His computers were hacked through Java. (As big as Oracle is, you would think they could fix their own problems, but apparently that is not the case. BTW, I was not the person who determined the hack, a local computer company called Tech Advanced Computers did that ... you can Google them, IYAI.) Thanks for the link to that article, I found it both interesting, informative and readable. |

 | | Stonehenge: Chess Tempo uses Javascript and you can move the pieces around there: http://chesstempo.com/gamedb/player...
When uploading a game from a newspaper or a magazine I first enter the moves in that diagram. Then I copy and paste them to CG. |

See Chessdreamer's post here: Barbero vs C Devaux, 1993 and look here http://www.365chess.com/game.php?gi... or here http://chesstempo.com/gamedb/game/1.... This is the second time I see a game here with the wrong players. I submitted a correction slip for that other game a couple of days ago, I don't know the game anymore. This is really a mess :( |

Nov-16-13
 | | chessgames.com: I've seen things like that before, actually on a number of 19th century games. The score is fine but the players (both of them!) are utterly wrong. We archive the PGN as it was when we originally received it, in this case it reads: [Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "1993.??.??"]
[EventDate "?"]
[Round "?"]
[Result "0-1"]
[White "Barbero Gerardo F (ARG)"]
[Black "C Devaux"]
[ECO "E81"]
[WhiteElo "?"]
[BlackElo "?"]
[PlyCount "86"]
Not sure what to say, other than at some point we received some really awful PGN. Everything is "?" except for the players which are both wrong. To make matters worse, if somebody ever submits the same game with the proper headers our software will notice that it's a duplicate and reject it. Anyhow the right thing to do is to submit a correction. Sooner or later we'll weed these out. |

| Nov-16-13 | | Memethecat: Your whole site goes down a minute or two after the WC games end, happened yesterday and today. It's not down for long but thought you'd like to know. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <Stonehenge> <CG> I suspect most of Barbero's "?" games (and there are quite a few) were really played by somebody else. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Memethecat> We've noticed that phenomenon ourselves. For whatever reason, the instant a game ends we are typically flooded with server requests. Perhaps people try to connect to CG for confirmation? I don't really understand, but it definitely happens every game to some extent. |

 | | chessgames.com: <The Last Straw: <chessgames.com> What's the new "find similar games" feature going to look like?> How it will work: it's going to be based on Opening Explorer data and therefore be much more accurate. As far as how it will "look" I rather fancy having embedded diagrams, at least some of the time, to illustrate what position it's talking about. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: <CG> As you know, there are some players Chessgames searches don't work with because their names correspond to stop words. Mostly, these aren't Very unexpected. I find it Rather strange, though, that you can only get Joe Noone by searching for Joe. Search for Noone and you'll get no results :) I see no reason why "noone" should be a stop word; it isn't a common spelling. (For that matter, I'm not sure why a player search should have any stop words at all.) |

| Nov-21-13 | | MarkFinan: <all out assault>???? Give it a rest now AJ email your little friend and think of another strategy! My bio bothers the man who said.......

 | | Domdaniel: I agree with <Switching Quythulg> -- (and I've played Joe Noone about four times in the last 30 years). 'Noone' is a typo for 'no-one' ... but, as SwitchQ sez, there's no reason to make it a stop word. |
