 | | WCC Editing Project: <Magical Dwarf Master> Yes it's sinking in now that you've told me twice.
I think <Daniel> made an exception for <Vladimirs Petrovs> because I compared not being able to find him in the "EZ Barcalounger" with the Soviets trying to erase him from history. In the case of <Carel "Ice" van den Berg> and his cousins, I'm forced to agree with you, even though I still only dimly understand what you're saying. Yes, that's how much I trust you. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Switching> Thanks for being our spokesperson. (Seriously: you explained the scenario very well.) Google (et al) have us all spoiled because their search technology is so wonderful we've come to take it for granted. When I was in college I used a computerized library catalog (one of the first in the country!) that was so fussy if you searched for "C DICKENS" it would return no results because you failed to spell out the first name. These days you can go to Google and ask for "Chardles Dikkens" and it will say "Showing results for Charles Dickens." (Try it if you're skeptical: https://www.google.com/#q=Chardles+...) We wish we could offer a search as flexible and intuitive as Google, but there's no way we'll ever be up to their standards. We do have some specific improvements in mind for our EZ Search, though. |

 | | Domdaniel: If you input 'Carel' into the Advanced Search, it throws up seven players of that name -- and, I think, 262 of 285 games belong to Carel van den Berg. Clearly, the Advanced Search is much more powerful. Anyone who seriously explores the CG database (or who plays in the annual Clue Hunt) must be familiar with it. I'm not really sure that we need the Quick Search at all. Advanced Search is an excellent tool, and I can see no reason why everyone should not use it. <Everyone> may think differently, of course. |

Are you suggesting we raze the "kiddie rollercoaster" at <FunWorld>? Oh what times we live in, when Irishmen can say "Nit" to old women... |

But clearly not with impunity... |

The score system for Zurich need to be adjusted, win +2, draw +1 |
|
Jan-31-14
 | | chessgames.com: Zurich uses 3-1-0 scoring? Cool, thanks.
Is that true for the blitz and rapid events as well? |

 | | chessgames.com: KKDEREK, you've seen the Java Help Page right? The important section is <HOW TO "WHITELIST" CHESSGAMES.COM FOR JAVA OPERATION ON YOUR SYSTEM>. Once you find the Java control panel on your machine it should be relatively easy. |

 | | WannaBe: No, no, no, they use a 2-1-0 system... read the link and my post. |

 | | WCC Editing Project: <GENEIOUS>!
Thank you <chessgames.com> I had never noticed your special Java Help Page before I saw your post there today. In the <HOW TO "WHITELIST" CHESSGAMES.COM FOR JAVA OPERATION ON YOUR SYSTEM> section, I followed every single order, in order, and it worked! <Protip:> When you get to the screen where you type in our web address, don't copy and paste it- type it in manually, and you <<<must>>> type it EXACTLY like this for it to work: h ttp://www.chessgames.com/
Notice I put a space between the "h" and the "ttp" so that you can see the actual address on this page. When you type the address into the Java Box, don't put this space in. If you miss typing in even one character it won't work. Now I am WHITELISTED and when I click on one of our games, no security warning! It's a bloody miracle.
Seriously, thank you. |

 | | chessgames.com: <they use a 2-1-0 system> Oh, I see. In that way the rapid section counts towards the overall winner. For our purposes, it's a normal scoring system. |

| Feb-02-14 | | RedShield: Don't forget to chase up the Aronian-Gelfand rapid exhibition game from yesterday. |

| Feb-02-14 | | LIFE Master AJ: I used to have two pages in my header ... I do not know what became of them I do not recall erasing them. #1.) Kibitzing trips + symbols.
#2.) Chess-dot-com record-holders ...
... And do you still have the playing area? I used to visit a lot, but I have not now in a long time. |

<#2.) Chess-dot-com record-holders … > I have no idea what that is.
<... And do you still have the playing area? I used to visit a lot, but I have not now in a long time.> We've pretty much abandoned it, hoping to find better software to accomplish the same thing, but we do still have it online at Chessgames Playing Zone. |

 | | chessgames.com: By the way, the link to Kibitzing Tricks is found on every preview page while you make a kibitz. Just click below, under the "Tip", where it says <See our Kibitzing Help page for tips & tricks.> Don't worry about losing your post as it will appear in a pop-up window. |

I'm going to guess he means the ChessGames.com Statistics Page. :) |

| Feb-03-14 | | john barleycorn: If you go to the search page and take "karpov" and "at least 1975" as criteria you will find the exact same game karpov vs. ulf andersson, milan 1975, b44, as number 11 and as number 46. How come? |
|
Feb-03-14
 | | chessgames.com: That's a known bug, related to the way the database caches search result pages combined. It's also related to the way that games within a single year are not presented in any particular order for non-tournament pages. (Which is why saying things like "game #44" doesn't really mean anything: if you come back tomorrow that could be a different game.) It's a hard bug to reproduce. If you go back and try it again you are likely to not witness the same behavior. We're working on a way to improve the ordering of game results, and when that happens that problem should become even harder to reproduce, hopefully impossible. |

Feb-03-14
 | | Domdaniel: <CG> -- <saying things like "game #44" doesn't really mean anything: if you come back tomorrow that could be a different game> Excuse my ignorance of this area -- but is this the same as the phenomenon whereby results from a recent tournament can be widely distributed across a player's games? |
|
Feb-03-14
 | | chessgames.com: <Dom> Yes, it's very much related. Most game results sort on purely the year field where it really ought to be a combination of the exact date and the tournament ID. |
