chessgames.com: <Perhaps CG should reverse the procedure. Lets make a list of sayings and proverbs and then find games for them :)>

When we come up with puns ourselves we often do just that. As you well know, the games are often mundane.

Our pun ideas come from many sources, including book titles, newspaper headlines, television show episode titles, and (of all things) names of nail polishes.

It's true that a joke that requires explaining is like a popped balloon. All the fun's been taken out of it. However, sometimes I see puns that are very highly rated because they are making a reference that I simply don't understand. That's when it gets passed around the office. If none of us understand it, forget it. Occasionally what goes right over my head makes somebody else laugh hysterically.

chessgames.com: Here's another tip for aspiring punsters: the Cambridge International Dictionary of Idioms

http://itools.com/tool/cambridge-in...

For example suppose you noticed this fellow Farmer and figured that he's fertile pun material. But what pun exactly? Type "farm" into the idiom dictionary and get several ideas: <Fish Farm>, <The Funny Farm>, etc.

It didn't include <Bet the Farm> nor <Bought the Farm> but those are probably Americanisms and that site is distinctly British.

Stonehenge: <fertile pun material>, good one.

I'm sure Farmer will harvest some more puns.

Sep-11-14  YouRang: Perhaps it would be a good time to add a forum for Bilbao 2014? It starts this weekend.

Sep-12-14  Memethecat: Sorry Daniel I wont be able to renew my subscription tomorrow, I've donated my spare cash to the Gaza Crisis Appeal - http://www.dec.org.uk/appeals/gaza-...

Maybe next year, thanks.

Sep-12-14  Benzol: <chessgames> Of the recent uploaded games I submitted from the 2014 North Island Ch can you tell me if there was something wrong with the PGN's from the games of players like Alex Huang, Benjamin Lim or Layla Timergazi? It seems you have all the games of the winner Len McLaren but the other players are somewhat sparse in representation. Were the other games considered of a poor standard? Thanks in advance.

chessgames.com: <Benzol> I haven't done a thorough investigation but on the face of it, it seems like a lot of those games got screened out for not meeting the 2200+ criteria. For example

[Event "North Island Championship 2014"]
[Site "Auckland NZL"]
[Date "2014.07.15"]
[Round "4.9"]
[White "HANSON, Gavin C"]
[Black "Nylund, Benjamin"]
[Result "1/2-1/2"]
[WhiteElo "1206"]
[ECO "C62"]
[EventDate "2014.07.14"]
[PlyCount "63"]

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 d6 4.c3 Bd7 5.d4 exd4 6.cxd4 Qe7 7.Nc3 Nf6 8.Bd3 d5 9.Qe2 dxe4 10.Nxe4 Nd5 11.Nc5 Qxe2+ 12.Bxe2 Bxc5 13.dxc5 O-O 14.O-O Bf5 15.Re1 Ncb4 16.Bd1 Bg4 17.a3 Bxf3 18.axb4 Bxd1 19.Rxd1 Nxb4 20.Bd2 Nc2 21. Rac1 Nd4 22.Re1 Rfe8 23.Rxe8+ Rxe8 24.Re1 Rxe1+ 25.Bxe1 Nb3 26.Bb4 b5 27. cxb6 cxb6 28.Kf1 b5 29.Bd6 f6 30.Ke2 Nd4+ 31.Kd3 Nf5 32.Bf4 1/2-1/2

So first we had the nuisance that we had to change the name of the white player from "HANSON" to "Hanson", but that's OK, the Librarian does stuff like that all the time.

But in this case we also noticed Hanson is rated only 1206. We didn't know what Lylund's rating is but it's unlikely to be over 2200 given the other facts of the situation.

Sep-12-14  Benzol: <We didn't know what Lylund's rating is but it's unlikely to be over 2200 given the other facts of the situation.>

That's OK. I realized that some of the players games wouldn't pass muster but the three players mentioned earlier along with Scott Yang, Alphaeus Ang, Don Eade, Jack James and Leighton Nicholls are quite strong and although not rated above the 2200 mark they do have player files here.

chessgames.com: The rule isn't that you need to be 2200+ to have a player page, rather than you should have played somebody rated 2200+, even if you lost to them. The upload page puts it like this: "It is strongly preferred that one or both of the players be at least master-strength."

We have exceptions to that rule as well, but there should be a specific reason. A nice Monday puzzle, an opening novelty, a future GM before his rating skyrocketed, etc.

Sep-13-14  Benzol: <Jim Bartle> <How many times do people need to be told that this page is not the place to complain about other kibitzers?> ??

Sorry <Jim>, I'm afraid you've lost me here.

:)

Who's complaining?

Sep-13-14  achieve: Either an admin deleted the "post", or the airhead himself did so within the given time.

chessgames.com: I can imagine an entire Dylan spoof made about Chessgames, "How many posts will a user type in / Before they Whistle like they should? / How many times will a person complain / That the pun of the day is no good?"

I'm finding this far too funny, my apologies. Back to the grindstone.

Sep-13-14  Jim Bartle: Ah, yes, now I see. <Sugardom> deleted his post right above mine, where he copied an exchange of posts he didn't like.

Sep-13-14  Jim Bartle: Don't post twice, it's all right.
Sep-13-14  Benzol: "Jokerman" and/or "Idiot Wind" seem appropriate somewhere here too.

:)

Sep-13-14  Benzol: I really come here to get "Shelter From The Storm".
Sep-13-14  Jim Bartle: I guess "Isis" belongs on a different page.
