 | | chessgames.com: About Pelletier, just go to his Error Correction Form and there is a box that says <The highest-rating of this player is incorrect>. The Librarian fixes things like that all the time. If FIDE kept records on peak-ratings available for download I'd be happy to find some way to synchronize with their database. I know they have the data in some way, because of the rating charts they construct, but to try to download the data in that fashion would be excruciating. Any ideas, <Zanzibar>? |

 | | chessgames.com: I just searched for "chessgames premium tour" at www.bing.com They chose to give me this advertisement: <Stonehenge Sunset Tour —
Private Guided Tours To Stonehenge Bus From London. Book Now! £25> Now why would on earth would Bing conclude that Chessgames has something to do with some prehistoric druidic ruins? :-) |

 | | Richard Taylor: Some mates take longer than 50 moves! I'll take the draw! < chessgames.com: <Tiggler: <chessgames.com> Under what version of the Laws of Chess are cg.com correspondence games played? I am thinking specifically about the 50-move rule, which is waived for tablebase wins under ICCF rules.>
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Embarrassingly I did not know the ICCF stance on the 50 move rule. FIDE has waffled on the issue many times and finally settled on the original rule, "50 moves, no exceptions." This went back to the 20s before computer analysis had anything to do with it: humans were actually the first to discover that some mates take longer than 50 moves. > |
|
| Sep-23-14 | | Tiggler: <chessgames.com>: <However, we've never made a statement on the subject, so I believe we are forced to adhere to what one may regard as "orthodox chess rules", the ones that FIDE uses presently. In other words: 50 moves, no exceptions.> Strictly speaking, the ICCF 50-move rule is not an exception to the FIDE Laws of Chess. The very first sentence of the FIDE Laws states: "FIDE Laws of Chess cover over-the-board play."
FIDE recognizes ICCF as the authority on correspondence chess and recognizes also their international titles. Some of the World Team players are very highly rated ICCF players. I think <g.mueller> is our highest ranked member (ICCF 2571, active, GM), though I cannot be sure. <kwid>, Kurt Widmann, is listed as inactive with rating 2560, M. If we are not using ICCF rules, then the help page or the sticky ought to say so. |

 | | kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com
When viewing a game collection e.g. Marshall's best games: Game Collection: MARSHALL'S BEST GAMES OF CHESS I think it would be nice to have an indication of either the number of pages of Kibitzing or the number of Kibitzes - say as of a certain date This kind of information is a guide to interest of the games in question. For example in Marshall's case, his famous game against Levitsky with the famous Queen sac has 10 pages of Kibitzing. I think it would add value when people look at collections to get this indicator somehow of the level of Kibitzing gone on. Cheers, K |

 | | chessgames.com: We've considered making a different color word balloon icon for that purpose, perhaps red to indicate "on fire". But it shouldn't be limited to game collections—if it behaves that way in one place, it's got to work that way everywhere. Good idea, though. Thanks for reminding. |

 | | Tabanus: Hi <CG> I have a suggestion. I think it would be fair (at least for the nominators) with a deadline at Game Collection Voting. Say one week, or one month. Perhaps a "voting closes in x days from now", similar to the CG Challenge. |

Even with just two pages of kibitzing - the following funny game would be highlighted a bit more :) Outrageous pawn moves!

 | | Tabanus: <CG> I also think the voting should be anonymous (or anonymous for the one who wants to be). Reasons: 1) It's unpleasant for some voters to have their name published. 2) The voters can say YES or NO without fear of getting unpopular (or popular). 3) Anon. review is very common for scientific journals, and there must be a reason for it. It should still be possible to state reasons for YES or NO. I believe anon. voting would encourage writing and attract biographers. Simply because of the chance to have the work better reviewed. Just my 2 cents. |

It will be interesting as in the Masters section the world's youngest IM one Anton Smirnov will be playing. Also his father. > This starts tomorrow. GM Murray Chandler this year has made it so that is quite a big event also considering he has a new Chess Centre. So as a business man (Gambit Books) and a chess player (at one stage among the elite GMs). I think some of the games will be live also. In the International Stage not a big deal but a part of chess culture and history... |

 | | chessgames.com: Tabanus: About time limits on voting, as it's possible to remove a nomination from the voting booth with sufficient nays, is it really necessary? Have we run into a problem where one lingers there for too long? About anonymous voting: perhaps that is a good idea. |

 | | Tabanus: <CG> The longest was more than a week, some months ago. I think that as it is now, people hesitate to vote at all if there is something they don't like. So in theory it could be hanging there forever. It certainly wrecks my nerves! Not so important probably, if it's only me, but to remove a nomination (after all the hard work) without even knowing the reason does not feel good. |

| Sep-26-14 | | Boomie: I'm not sure if this has been noticed but I just stumbled on it. Susan Polgar has left the building. Here is the start of her last post: <Susan Polgar: <john barleycorn> My name is Susan Polgar. After asking you nicely several times to address me by my proper name, and to behave properly, without success, I resign. You win.As long as you continue to troll Wesley's page and insult people as a sport, I will not be here. I am done with people like you and a few others here trashing me, my family, and Wesley, constantly.> Wesley So I'm not sure what can be done about this but the site is losing valuable assets due to the actions of a few trolls. |
|
| Sep-26-14 | | Pulo y Gata: <Boomie> Perspective. Susan bristles and blows her top when others question or contradict her words. For example, look for her claims about her and Paul Troung's legal battles with USCF and her reaction when some people called her to it. Also look up her reaction when people won't buy Paul Troung's claims about his being a national champ at age five (!!!), unbelievable escape adventure that makes Life of Pi a bland piece of literature, and financial wizardry. Unable to convince everyone about their claims and 'exemplary' records, she made an escape attempt and lashed out on poor <johnbarleycorn>, who, everyone knows, must die. She left on her own volition. This site's valuable assets include people like you, Boomie, and <johnbarleycorn>, who pay to keep the site running and freeloaders like me enjoying. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Susan Polgar has left the building.> Yes, I'm well aware, I spoke to her about it. I reminded her that if she communicates on her own page she can delete inappropriate or rude comments and even prohibit certain members from posting there. I think it's clear John Barleycorn was rude to her, but I don't think that solitary incident is the entire reason for her leaving. Remember that Wesley So himself declared "I'm not gonna visit this site anymore" although he still drops by from time to time. |
