 | | Penguincw: How about correcting this under the "What's New" section: < "After 6 months and 36 moves, The World Team defeated GM Arkadij Naiditsch at the Chessgames Challenge! for free and join the world team in their effort to take down a SuperGM!" > While on a similar topic, do you know when the next Team White vs. Team Black game will be? Thanks. :) P.S. Oh, and one last question. Will this game be a GOTD soon (see chessgames.com chessforum)? |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> -- < a spot check showed that a few of them were utterly worthless for inclusion> I know that there have been difficulties, but is it really necessary to be *quite* so hard on AJ? He is, after all, a master-level player. Whatever other problems may arise, his games generally are worthy of going in the database. Perhaps wins against much weaker players can be excluded, but the Ballard game is clearly not one of these. |

 | | chessgames.com: I think AJ wanted to include the entirety of his games from a low tier tournament, some of which were no doubt fine efforts, but the spot check revealed completely undesirable games. I don't believe AJ was either being vain or had any ill intentions, he was just being complete. However, completeness of low tier events are not what we seek. In any case I've spoken with Mr. Ballard and told him we'd be happy to accept the game. |

 | | Willber G: <chessgames.com: <Suffering from c6-ness> That's really clever. <Hocus Pocus> is good too. The cheap zinger or the deep metaphor? It's a hard call.> Yay, you chose my pun, "Suffering from c6-ness"! I'm glad some people liked it. |

BTW, the Hastings tournament has begun in England ... how about a page? |

| Dec-31-14 | | Benzol: <chessgames> The 2015 New Zealand Open starts later today (approx 12 hours from now). I know <Richard Taylor> has already posted a link to it but just in case you missed it here it is again. http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/NZ... <Richard> himself will be playing. Hope you will be able to give some coverage of it. |

 | | chessgames.com: We're happy to cover games from the New Zealand Congress. Does that site have PGN online? If/when it does that's the link I need the most. |

 | | Richard Taylor: Hi I expeected to be playing IM Kerr so had prepared for a Pirc. I played a Rubinstein against the GM's English but I was intending to study it more later. As it was I think we both went wrong a bit. But by move 20., instead of playing f5 as intended, I overestimated the dangers to my position (although I thought I was winning at that point and I may have been I think he was going to give up a piece in despair)... and decided to swap and missed an in betweener (a check on e6) and then the position went bad for me. But by this time he was down to 20 secs 15 secs then I made another error with f5 trying to confuse him but fogetting his moves...but he said afterwards his mistake was to play Qe4. It was good to play a GM for the first time in my life (in a standard game). I was the last of the top boards to finish. He handled the time trouble and ending pretty well. I was stressed but felt I was better in the mid game. He was right in saying castling by me was inaccurate and I should have left my B on c5 with Qe7 but I was sure of that b4 line. But there are some examples of it on CG.com here. Interesting experience even though I lost! Nice young fellow he is, from Denmark. He's already sunburnt. Not a good idea. I keep out of the sun. |

 | | Richard Taylor: Not sure if there is link to the PGNs yet. The tournament idea is like an open so anyone can play, so there are GMs, IMs, FMs, WFMs NMs and others mixed with woodpushers like my good self... I cant find a link to the PGNs yet, There were so many games though. A big tournament in a very beautiful part of Auckland. I drove there but I could get there for free using a Gold Card which is for such as myself who are ancient and are retired, even if, as in my case, they retired from reading books and mucking around to more of the same... Such are the wonderful benefits of the lucky ones who have slipped through fate's devilish tricks (forcing some to sleep under bridges, others to actually work)... |
|
Jan-01-15
 | | Richard Taylor: So, using that wonderful card, one gets free transport if one is an old codger like moi. train or bus to the city centre, then a harbour ferry to Devonport which is a great place, it has my favourite thing, second hand book shops (I have a large collection of all kinds of books, my smallest collection are my chess books but Murray Chandler is selling some of his Gambit Books there so I might increase my chess section....) The beach is great also but I leave that to the young... I like those old books with matches and so on...Must tale some real money tommorrow. I can report that Sukander is as charming and beguiling as her picture... |

| Jan-01-15 | | Knight13: <chessgames.com> How does GTM create a table to choose which moves gets what points in a game? Does the game get analyzed by a chess engine like Fritz and then assigned points based on what the engine found to be the best (3 pts), second best (2 pts), bad move (-2 pts), etc.? |
|
Jan-01-15
 | | Penguincw: <knight13> Perhaps this page will answer your question: Guess-the-Move Help Page (scroll down to "SCORING"). If not, sorry about that. :) P.S. <cg> Sorry for constantly asking this question, but do you know when the next Team White vs. Team Black game is? Thanks. :) |
|
| Jan-01-15 | | Knight13: <Penguincw> That's the kind of question that annoys college professors, and I asked it. :-p Thanks. |

 | | chessgames.com: Happy new year everybody!
<Does the game get analyzed by a chess engine like Fritz and then assigned points based on what the engine found to be the best (3 pts), second best (2 pts), bad move (-2 pts), etc.?> It's something like that but it works based on the position evals. If the best move has an eval of +1.78 and you find one that is +1.70 that's close enough, and you get full credit. But if your move is +1.52 you get partial credit, and if your move is +0.00 you lose points. |
|
| Jan-01-15 | | Knight13: <chessgames.com> Your example helped a lot. Thanks. Happy New Year! |
|
| Jan-01-15 | | Benzol: <chessgames> You should be able to access some of the PGN of the New Zealand Open at http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve...
The PGN for round 1 is listed at the top of the page. In the meantime I'm off to the beach for the day.
