| Feb-10-15 | | thegoodanarchist: <Domdaniel: As a regular member of a <tirosemiophile> site - for those who collect used labels from French cheese boxes - I ... what? You mean everyone will laugh at me now?>
Only if you try to discuss how to stop trolling of your website devoted to discussing French cheese boxes, and then some annoying goofball starts posting hypothetical examples of how a person would troll such a website (For example <Are discussions of Italian cheese boxes off limits?>)> |

| Feb-10-15 | | thegoodanarchist: Italian cheese boxes??? On a FRENCH cheese box discussion site? How dare you, sir!! |
|
| Feb-10-15 | | thegoodanarchist: No, IT IS YOU, SIR, who is the imbecilic sociopath!! We do not - I REPEAT DO NOT - discuss cheese boxes here. We discuss cheese box <labels>. Try to get that into your pea sized brain!!! |
|
| Feb-10-15 | | thegoodanarchist: What about a <new> label thread? May I start a <new> label thread? Good god, man, are you daft?? This is the <used> cheese box label discussion website. It appears you are a hopeless troll... |
|
| Feb-10-15 | | thegoodanarchist: <Domdaniel>: What about the fact that new cheese boxes eventually become used cheese boxes? (silence for while)
<other poster>: <Dom> does have a point. <used French cheese box label website admin>: grumble... well, OK, but no more than two posts per DAY related to <new> French cheese box labels. I am watching you! |

 | | Domdaniel: <thegoodanarchist> Brilliant. Nutterweb commentator Andrew Keen has said that "The internet is a tool for persecuting people we don't know about stuff that is irrelevant". On the other hand, the Nutterweb teaches us that nothing is irrelevant. Incidentally, I borrowed the term 'tirosemiophile' from novelist Thomas Pynchon. I admit to occasionally hanging out on Pynchonista sites. |

| Feb-10-15 | | thegoodanarchist: (Enter GM Nigel Tall, England's premier cheese box label grandmaster) <Nigel>: 'Evening, blokes! <Cheese box label patzer>: What do you know of cheese box labels? You lost the cheese box label world championship to Garry Gastbarov! <Nigel>: I am still the top-rated cheese box label commentator in all of England! <other patzer>: You stink! <Nigel>: I'm never coming to this used French cheese box label discussion website again! Anyway, I have a new gig at cheesebox24.com |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> Here's a more traditional complaint: the game Timman vs Ivanchuk, 1999 has some kibitzing which suggests that the original move-order was an unlikely 4.f4 (etc) - subsequently corrected to what we see now, a fairly normal French. However, in the Opening Explorer, the old move order with 4.f4 still survives. |

|
| Feb-10-15 | | jphamlore: <CG> I have submitted Stoltz - Kashdan, 1928, from sources such as: http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/...
I would hope others on this forum could agree this is one of the most famous and instructive bishop versus knight endgames of all time, to be found in many endgame manuals. |

 | | chessgames.com: Zanzibar — Re: <A comparison <CG> vs <Chessbase>, for the recently completed <Grenke (2015)> tournament.> I can explain a lot of what you see there.
First is the name-normalization issue. <In point of fact, <CG> doesn’t even keep the player’s names properly normalized for some reason.> This is only temporarily true. There are multiple reasons why names might not be normalized in the short term. One is that during the live games that we broadcast, an admin typed a name by hand (and different admins have different styles of doing that). So one day if you look at the live game PGN it says "Carlsen" and the next day "Magnus Carlsen". We also sometimes see this directly from the official site, in one round it's "Carlsen, M" and the next round it's "Carlsen, Magnus". I imagine they have people fat-fingering data in on their end as well. The software fixpgn (which hadn't been run in a few days, but I just ran it now) renormalizes all of the names so that it appears [White "Magnus Carlsen"] every time. About the tiebreak games, you write <Unfortunately, it looks like the tiebreak games haven’t been included in the PGN download.> We usually intentionally keep them in a separate page, at least for new events. In this case GRENKE Chess Classic (Tiebreak) (2015). Next is an artifact that comes about from live broadcasts. You blog <Instead of one tournament SCID sees four!> — Here's what's going on: Our live broadcast software hijacks the event field to stuff in current clock information. (I know that sounds horrible, and it is — it's legacy.) We have software that repairs that as well (it's not fixpgn but it's very similar). So while most of the games say "GRENKE Chess Classic" a handful of them say something like "0:08:33-0:44:12". It could very well be that GRENKE is perfectly normalized now but wasn't earlier today. If you wouldn't mind, please try loading it back into SCID and tell me if it suddenly works perfectly or there is still some issue. |
|
| Feb-11-15 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> right now? OK... yup, it's A-OK now. Could you somehow run fixpgn when all the tournament games are in? At least just for that tournament? Actually, given the wonders that fixpgn does, why doesn't it get run at the end of every round? You know how many games and could just do mod arithmetic as you add each game to see if the fix is in. (I'll put a pointer to your kibitz on my blog) |
|
| Feb-11-15 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> The only trouble, of course, is that when people download a completed tournament they don't know they have to come back to pick up the proper header information. |
|

 | | chessgames.com: <Actually, given the wonders that fixpgn does, why doesn't it get run at the end of every round?> That's a very good point. The reason is rather stupid: that it takes so long to run across the entire database. Why this is stupid, is because it would be trivial for it to process only the most recently downloaded games, and it was take only a few seconds. So all that's required is a command line flag that makes it only process the recently downloaded games and not the huge job of scanning all 740K games. |
|
| Feb-11-15 | | zanzibar: One last note for tonight.
How does one know to look for a separate playoff page? The Grenke playoff isn't listed here:
New Tournaments
And as far as I can tell there isn't a link on the regular tournament page to the tiebreak either. . |

showing next to a theatre near you this 2015.
until then unbelievers repent from your sins. |
