 | | MissScarlett: Thanks for fast-tracking my games, but for Fiszlewicz vs Lasker, 1914 I note that i)the game type should be exhibition, and ii)Rosenberg still remains in the game data (an issue I've seen with other corrections). |

 | | MissScarlett: Heinz Foerder vs Alekhine, 1935 Is this a recent upload? It's a duplicate of Y Porat vs Alekhine, 1935 (Foerder changed his name to Porat) with the omission of a couple of moves. Requires deletion. |

| Feb-15-15 | | zanzibar: <CG> Some discussion of illegal PGN in the Bistro: Biographer Bistro (kibitz #9574) Biographer Bistro (kibitz #9579) |
|
| Feb-16-15 | | zanzibar: I asked this over in the Bistro, but since nobody apparently knows... <Q - How does <ChessBase> database software handle illegal PGN?> I only run <CBLight 2009>, and it seems to just try to load the PGN in as best it can. But it seems to neglect informing me of these errors. Is that true? |

 | | chessgames.com: <zanzibar> I have a lot to say on the subject of illegal PGN, as I believe I've seen every possibly way to corrupt PGN, but I'll do that over at the Bistro. About Chessbase, I don't happen to own a copy, but Kevin does, so I could ask him to do an experiment. To do it right we'd have to prepare a file with various intentional errors to see how it reacts. But why is that important? |
|
| Feb-16-15 | | zanzibar: It's important for two reasons.
<CG> has (or had) at least 70 illegal games with illegal PGN. I feel that some systematic screening should be done before such games get introduced into the database. The fact that there are "corrupt" games suggests to me that no such safeguards are in place. It's important for several reasons.
<1) As a database server to your customers and community at large, all the games should have legal PGN.> This isn't too hard a task, with programs like SCID it's automatic. Just load a submission in, and get a pass/fail vote. <2) Legal pgn is required to actually play over the games with pgn4web.> Some mistakes it allows, but many it doesn't.
<3) There is a standard to meet when matched against your competition (or whatever is the proper term).> I have never (or almost never) found an illegal game from <ChessTempo>, <Carolus>, <MarkWeeks>, <TWIC>, <Chessbase>, <365chess>. I have never found (or almost never) found illegal PGN in any of the massive collections of games from <MillBase> (katar), <Enormous> (Hyatt) or <ICOfY> (now defunct). I have very rarely found any illegal PGN in <RUSbase> (al20102007.nimrod.ru). Although the percentage is low, the number of games is high, ~70 in <CG>'s database. <4) Submissions with illegal PGN can also indicate that closer scrutiny of the validity of the scores is needed.> Of course some of the illegal PGN is truly trivial, obvious, and easily fixed. That would include pawn promotion (e8(Q) being illegal). Or using [] instead of {}, or SCID's picky complaint about bad token input (e.g. 1.e4! vs. correct 1.e4 !, etc. But the standard is the standard, and erring on the side of strictness is better right? And it's very easy to fix. But, on the other hand, there is one tournament with 9 ! illegal games on <CG>. And it seems at least one of the games has several bad moves in the score. Having so much bad PGN calls into queston the reliability of the entire submission. Another example is where the king gives check to another king directly (not via discovered check), e.g. 57.Ke4+ or whatever. Now, we all like a fighting king in the middle of the board, but not to that extent. We know that the score is off somehow. Why not catch such errors before they get out of the starting gate? |
|
| Feb-16-15 | | zanzibar: In the previous post, the parenthetical (e.g. 1.e4! vs correct 1.e4 !) must be imagined with curlies around the bang. If you know what I mean... |
|
| Feb-16-15 | | zanzibar: Now, given the fact that <CG> has games with illegal PGN, together with the assumption that the admins want to correct the situation, there is the question- <Q - How can <CG> even detect those games in its database with illegal PGN.> This is one reason why I asked about <Chessbase>. I had assumed it was one of your tools, since it's widely accepted within the "industry". Me, I use <CGlight 2009> as mentioned several times. I also have a old copy of <Fritz 12>. They're good, but not as capable as the true <Chessbase> professional version. On the other hand, my preference is for SCID. I know it better from using it everyday, and I can point out several functions that I think it does better than my versions of <CB>. One of which is detecting, and importantly, reporting, illegal PGN. One other feature it has, but I don't know if <CB> has, is the ability to script with it. Unfortunately, it's native interface language is tcl - a language I had to learn just for interfacing with SCID (via python - another preference of mine). |

 | | chessgames.com: I'm not questioning that conforming to the PGN standard is important, just questioning why the Chessbase product itself comes into question. I suppose you are hoping that it proves to be some sort of gold standard of PGN validation, but even if it is, it doesn't do us much good. Anyhow, let's take this over to the Bistro. |

 | | Domdaniel: As John Prine almost sang:
"And you may see me tonight
With illegal PGN...
It's hard to wash off,
Takes a lot of squeegeein'
Won't you please tell the man
I did not cause this mess
I'm just trying to play me some chess..." |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> Bunratty Classic Masters tournament (Sebastian Maze, Simon Williams, Sam Collins, etc) starts on Wednesday: http://www.bunrattychess.com/classi... The weekender with Wesley So, Nigel Short, etc begins on Friday. So and Short apparently have a few fans round here, so coverage would be good. |

| Feb-16-15 | | zanzibar: Normally,
I love doggerel,
when told rather well,
deliciously swell,
even if cartel,
so let's all revel,
and my dear marcel,
I'll say farewell. |

 | | Annie K.: <cg> I submitted the pun 'Ohme, Oh My' for M Ohme vs E Cherednichenko, 2007 a long time ago - I see you used the same pun for another Ohme game today, could you please delete it from my puns list? :) |

| Feb-16-15 | | Abdel Irada: <thegoodanarchist: <chessgames.com: <zanzibar> I have a lot to say on the subject of illegal PGN, > misdemeanor or felony PGN?>
Maybe the kind that causes Windows to tell you, "You have attempted an illegal operation. Please remain where you are and do nothing else until help arrives." ∞ |

 | | chessgames.com: <I see you used the same pun for another Ohme game today, could you please delete it from my puns list? :)> I hadn't noticed that. The pun I actually used was Ni-Ohme, which was submitted as <Ohme, Oh Ni>. I thought that was too forced; yours (ours) was much better. |

 | | chessgames.com: I should make it so that you can voluntarily delete your own pun submissions. |
|
Feb-17-15
 | | Annie K.: Thanks. :) Hmm, might be nice to be able to delete our own submissions... but that might also lose some actually successful puns whose submitters get impatient and decide that their pun was probably not received well if not used "in all this time" (since we can't see how well our puns are doing). Btw, should I leave the Bookie alone while you tend to Pay Day business (if yes, let me know when), or is there no danger of conflict? |
