Have none problem with Chess Viewer Deluxe 2,

With Chess Viewer Deluxe (first version) have screen showing a moment of Java circle appearing to start, and game appears several whiles afterwards, so it does run but appears to slow to nothing for several minutes,

currently using Java 8 update 45 (Java 8u45) latest update http://krebsonsecurity.com/2015/04/...

Richard Taylor: <<Richard Taylor: I'm playing in the New Zealand Seniors again this year. > Wonderful, and good luck. We'll see if we can get the PGN up.>>

Thanks. I lost today to my friend Leonard McClaren who is currently the joint NZ Champion. (There were 10 of them!)

Should be an interesting tournament especially as we are seeing more of us old chess fellows become "seniors"...Although some have just reached 50, others are in their mid or late 60s.

We all seem to be lasting, touch wood or "knock on wood" as I believe is said in the US!

Just updated to Version 8, update 45, 32-bit, on Win7 Professional (64-bit OS) using IE 11.

It takes ~2 to 3 minutes for the board to appear, but it works. I did not have to change any settings.

(I was using Version 8, update 40 before)

Apr-16-15  Boomie: <WannaBe: It takes ~2 to 3 minutes for the board to appear>

Thanks. I see it loads after a few minutes. But what process takes that long to load? I'm not sure I have the patience for it.

WannaBe: <Boomie> It's far beyond me on what the heck is happening to Java after Oracle took it over from Sun. Grrrr...

chessgames.com: 2-3 minutes, really? I've seen the 40 second wait before, although thankfully it tends to only happen when you first load a game (other pages load much quicker). 2-3 minutes is ridiculous, very few users would wait past the 60 second mark.

WannaBe: <chessgames.com> What's your environment? I did mine with i5 on 16G RAM Dell laptop, (3-years old, so not 4th Gen Intel chip, either...)

I am on vacation this week, but I can double-check the rendering speed on faster PCs when I return to work on Monday. =)

And what browser?

chessgames.com: Sorry <Stonehenge>, your file is enormous now so it will take a little bit of effort. But I promise, it's next in line.

<What's your environment?> We have several, a Mac OS X, several iOS devices, an Android phone, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

Apr-18-15  zanzibar: When displaying a player's opening rep:

http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...

for a given opening <CG> just displays the games.

Might it also be useful to display the win/draw/loss percentages vs average (for given color)?

Please note the passing of IM Collin Crouch.

WannaBe: <chessgames.com> I just tried with the new Java 8, Update 45 on both Win7 Pro/Win8.1 Pro, both i7 chip with lots and lots of RAM; and same behaviour, takes ~2 minutes for the board to show up.

But it does work... FYI.

WannaBe: Same identical thing on Chrome, FireFox, Opera, all takes time to load the board. (Win7 Pro, i7 chip...)

Plus I had dink with the Java setting in Chrome, apparently Google don't want to support Java (security issues) on their browser.

Tabanus: Java 8, Update 45: I downloaded IE 11 and uninstalled Chrome. Then I uninstalled Java and reinstalled it, got confirmation from Java: Ok version (8/45). Then security settings: enabled Java script. Umm, and CG is still on my Java exception list. Closed/open browser, restarted computer a few times. And it still does not work.

That is, it takes 1,5 minutes to see the game. Then if I leave the game for a few seconds and click back to it, it takes 1-2 minutes again. Rats.

chancho: I simply switched to pgn4web.

It's too much hassle waiting for the Chess Deluxe to appear.

Hopefully the problem can be fixed at some point.

WannaBe: This 'new' Java update is not doing it for me, either.

I went to a game page, posted a comment, and while this Java is loading, I was done with the page, and left to another page.

Now the stupid Java refuse to load any game page. I think I have to close every tab of my browser, let it reset, wait for Java to load in order for it to go back to 'normal'.

Will try it out and see if it works. Grrrrrrrrr.

Tabanus: And today (when turning on) there was a "Java helper" plug-in which I was asked to enable. I did, but still 1 min. 25 seconds to load. With the pgn4web we can't see rounds and dates? Filling in tournament game dates will take some time hereafter.

I cant see any of the appelets...

Neither I nor my son can get any of the appelets to work, it says, "this plug in not supported" and I spoke to user Wayne Power today, he has Windows 7 and they don't work, I have Windows XP (and I thought it was because of it not being supported, and I do plan to upgrade it, but...that is not the cause) and my son (who looks occasionally and has Windows 7) also wiped off Java, reinstalled it, but to no avail...

I used to like using MistyBeach but now even the default pgn viewer sometimes doesn't work or appear...

I had an interesting book by him from the local library (Auckland NZ), a large book, with a lot of modern GM games...I didn't think he was very old. Sad event to hear about.

Richard Taylor: So, I am not enjoying cg.com at the moment as it's not the same downloading a pgn, although that is great, I can run those on Winboard or Fritz or, by the way "Tarrasch" which is a free data base which I use with a free Komodo! That Tarrasch is very good, it was designed by the New Zealand chess player Bill Forster...

But, that aside, I cant get the appelets or "plugins" to work. It is all rather sad.

Apr-19-15  Benzol: In view of the commentary here and with what happened the last time I tried to install a Java upgrade I'm somewhat reluctant to install the new update.
