al wazir: <WannaBe: What operating system are you using and what kind of browser (and version)?> Windows 7 PC, 64-bit OS; Firefox 39.0.

<You can also go to https://www.java.com/verify to confirm the install was correct, or done correctly.> It says "Java is disabled or not installed." Hmmm.

But when I go to the Java Control Panel it says "Java in the browser is enabled." Under the Security tab I have Security level "High" selected, and I have Chessgames Home Page listed under Exception Sites. All of these settings are unchanged from long ago, when Java last worked properly with Deluxe Chess Viewer II, but I downloaded the v. 51 instalation file and ran it only a couple of days back.

WannaBe: Do another install, probably the first one was incomplete, I've seen that happen before.

WannaBe: Strange, go to control panel, remove update 8.51 then do install again. Goto the verify page to confirm.

When I did this before, with earlier version of update 8, the settings remained, and did not need to reset them.

But double check before attempting viewing a game.

WannaBe: Make sure you are installing 32-bit, browser version, not 64-bit, OS version.

Install the 32-bit, and try it with IE, just for sheets and giggles. You do not need to remove 64-bit, both can co-exist.

Since geocities have ended many links that point togeocities sends a redirect notice towards https://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/geo...,

WayBackMachine has some archived links for Chess Viewer Deluxe https://web.archive.org/web/2008121...

Hi <al wazir>. I have been following your dialog with <Wanna Be> tryng to get your Java up & running. I'm not very computer savvy but in your statement above you said you have 'Chessgames Home Page' listed under 'Exception Sites'. I just checked the 'Exception Sites' box in my Java security section & I have it listed as http://wwww.chessgames.com & not Chessgames Home Page. I don't know how you have it listed exactly in your 'Exception Sites' box but you might want to check that(note that there are four 'w's above & there should be only three when you list it in the 'Exception Sites' box . Hope you get Deluxe Chess Viewer II up & running.

al wazir: Well, I got it to work, and it only took six hours of my time. I was going to use that time to develop a Nobel-prizewinning improvement to the Standard Model or to write a best-selling novel, but now I won't. Never mind.

For what it's worth, here's what worked. On the Mozilla support page (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/k...), I found and followed these instructions:

<Click the menu button and choose Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.

In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Plugins panel.

Click on the Java(TM) Platform plugin to select it.

If Java is disabled, click on Never Activate to open its drop-down menu and select the option to activate Java. The recommended (default) option is Ask to Activate, which lets you run Java when prompted.>

The setting that I had previously chosen was "Always activate." Why "Always activate" doesn't work and "Ask to activate" does is one of the mysteries of computational science, the sort of thing that has always endeared the subject to me.

Awesome! It's always worth the time <al wazir> to make something work. Never let the 'machines' beat you. ;)

Penguincw: (probably should've asked this earlier).

Hi <cg>. Can you open up a forum for the Lake Sevan Tournament?

I can't find any official site, but there's the chess-results site.

Thanks. :)

MissScarlett: Any chance of introducing a function allowing one to search by game type, i.e., classical, blitz, etc.? It would have the added benefit of helping to identify the many games that are wrongly atttributed in that respect.

Let me know what you think, but only if you agree with me.

Jul-17-15  Abdel Irada: <Domdaniel: Mens Sana in corpore Sana?>

One quibble: Since "corpore" is neuter, the adjective should be "sano."

Jul-17-15  Abdel Irada: <al wazir: Well, I got it to work, and it only took six hours of my time. I was going to use that time to develop a Nobel-prize[-]winning improvement to the Standard Model or to write a best-selling novel, but now I won't. Never mind.>

The good news, however, is that since it takes you only six hours to produce a best-selling novel, you still have time to pen three of them in the 18 hours remaining to you.

Penguincw: Wow. Look at the Recent Chessforum Activity page. I've seen quiet, but <8> forums? And then the fact that <my> forum has been the busiest in the last 24 hours. :O

Anyway, <cg>, can you set up a forum for Biel, which starts tomorrow?

http://www.bielchessfestival.ch/en/...

Also, can you broadcast some games as well. Thanks. :)

chessgames.com: <Penguincw> BTW, that wasn't a reply to your post, just an announcement. About Biel, yes, we'll get a page right away.
Jul-19-15  MarkFinan: I've just @ed you and West Yorkshire police on twitter with a tweet. You'll see an email I received that just woke me up.. Follow the police, they'll follow you back, and then they'll ask you for a certain persons IP address. Please give them it so I can put a stop to this once and for all, I know you won't give me the IP address, I know you never contacted my solicitor, so will you please just kindly assist the police? I now have over a 1000 similar type of emails from a "man" who developed an infatuation with me on <your> site, I can prove this kinda stuff has been going on for over 2 years, I, or the police really need the IP address to track him. I don't like speaking to the police but I have twice over this, I just kept letting things slip, but because he lives in Brazi I can't beat the living daylights out of him, so even if you don't want to help me then please help the police, I'll make sure they direct message you first.

Thanks.

Jul-19-15  notyetagm: <CG.COM>

Can we please have a forum for the <LAKE SEVAN 2015 TOURNAMENT>, which is a battle of chess prodigies (Sevian, Vidit, Artemiev,etc.).

Thanks

chessgames.com: <notyetagm> Sorry it took so long to get this: Lake Sevan (2015).

<MarkFinan> I have little idea what you're talking about but if police contact us we'll be cooperative.

Jul-20-15  Gottschalk: The frequency of registered members on the site is reducing. Why ? Does the number of people
interested in chess in the world diminished?
Perhaps the American Olympic team can become stronger in the future, naturalizing more players from Elite.
God bless U.S.A. and chessgames.
