MissScarlett: I live in hope of finding a game Walter Frere 1-0 Horst E Leede, to wit, <You can Leede a Horst to Walter, but cannot make him think>

Penguincw: <You can Leede a Horst to Walter, but cannot make him think>

That could win Pun of the Year honours at the Caissar Awards.

MissScarlett: I see that Leede (Staten Island) and Frere (Newark) played top board for their clubs in New York's Metropolitan Chess League in 1922, so it's likely they played at least once.

I wonder if there may be an archive of games of the MCL hidden somewhere. Even by the early 20th century, there was an appreciation of recording the scores of serious games for posterity.

Aug-09-15  zanzibar: I tried to find info about <Walter Loose> on the web. There's absolutely no Nazi connection I could find beyond his participation in

<Lublin/Warsaw/Cracow Poland, 1942>

http://www.chess.com/blog/batgirl/c...

Loose wrote a book on Lasker in 1947, fwiw. I could find no political or military connections.

So... I'd like to know if there is any material connecting him to the Nazis. In fact, I'd be interested in any additional biographical material of any kind. Including more games (hopefully a little better played than the GotD example).

Aug-09-15  zanzibar: And while I'd in the neighborhood...

I wonder what the status is of my submission of <Feuer, Ivan> games to <CG>?

Game Collection: Submission Edition - Ivan (Janosz) Feuer

Extensive biographical info:

Aug-10-15  RonB52734: <cg> I wonder if you might mention Alex Shabalov on your front page. I think he just won the US Open with 8.5/9.

FSR: Don't you mean "Owner of a <Lonely> Hort" rather than "Owner of a Loney Hort"?
Aug-11-15  NakoSonorense: Hi, chessgames.com.

I've been out of here for a while. Have you developed an app for the site yet?

offramp: <FSR: Don't you mean "Owner of a <Lonely> Hort" rather than "Owner of a Loney Hort"?>

I thought that but I soon realised that Loney is a conflation of Lonely and Loony, which are two perfect adjectives to describe GM Miles, the Lonely Loony.

Aug-11-15  hms123: Related to <Nako's> comment, as of the last few days my iPad mini2 no longer remembers my login info. I have to log in each day. I assume it has to do with cookies, but I haven't changed anything at all. Any thoughts? I use Safari.

Aug-11-15  hms123: <WannaBe> Thanks. It just started. I have not downloaded the latest update for some good reason that I have now forgotten. If the problem continues, I will do some serious trouble shooting and let you know the outcome.

But it says lonely now.

<NakoSonorense: Hi, chessgames.com. I've been out of here for a while. Have you developed an app for the site yet?> No but one is in development. Seriously. Beta-test announcement forthcoming.

offramp: I am very sad that today's game of the the day has had its name changed. It is at the moment, and for the future, <"Owner of a Lonely Hort".>

That is not what the great SARGON intended. Originally the title was <"Owner of a Loney Hort"> where the brilliant neologism <Loney> was a portmanteau of LONDON, LONELY & LOONEY. That is a perfect description of GM Tony Miles (except that he was from Birmingham).

In fact I find the corrected title repugnant and offensive in the extreme.

The game Miles vs Hort, 1983 used to have the title <"Owner of a Loney Hort".>

I have been traduced by some malcontents and ne'erdowells and jobbernowls and please, don't patronize me.

I wasn't born yesterday. I am well acquainted with all the derivatives of "lone" (lone out, lone ten, lone loose, lone surfers, etc.) The fact of the matter is the pun was referencing Tony Miles's lunacy, loneliness and Londinocentrism.

This was therefore a direct attack on his character

Do the right thing and delete it.

Delete the whole game.

Aug-11-15  hms123: <allow from websites I visit> was checked. I know I haven't fooled with settings at all.

chessgames.com: <<allow from websites I visit> was checked> That's normal. It's the "third party" websites that are controversial. Facebook tracking pixels and all that.

Is it only Chessgames that exhibits this behavior or does it sign you out of all sites?

chessgames.com: <not what the great SARGON intended> Sorry, you can't pin this one on Sargon. The credit/blame for both the pun and the typo go to Daniel Freeman.
