chessgames.com: <verbatim escapes> That's the real solution. I always understood that what I'm doing is not academically correct: there is no rule that says that that URLs cannot end in commas or periods or exclamation points. They very often do end in question-marks, and thanks to Wikipedia many thousands of very important URLs end in close-parens. So the verbatim escape handles all the cases where these compromises fail.

  kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com

I think the master player pages maybe underplaying the importance of the Chess Olympiads - is this subsumed into "Tournaments" right now?!. Olympiads and team events generally is where players show their strength as team players.

For example, from Wiki:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_...

"Becoming an International Master (IM) in 1957 and a Grandmaster in 1961, Robatsch dedicated much of his life to serving Austrian chess, representing the nation at eleven Chess Olympiads and one European Team Chess Championship. Up until his last Olympiad in 1994, he played first board on every occasion and returned some impressive results. At the 1960 Leipzig Olympiad, he astounded the chess world by scoring 84.4% and taking the board 1 gold medal, while still only an IM. This was also the year that he became Austrian champion."

But I have seen this for many Fischer opponents recently that i video annotated games for - they really often excelled in Olympiad team chess - representing their country.

I wonder if the current "template" could do with a specific section for "Team and Olympiad Events". Mikhail Tal also was really great at Olympiads.

Cheers, K

kingscrusher: Just to clarify - as an example, the current template:

NOTABLE GAMES: [what is this?]
Robatsch vs Jansa, 1974 1-0
Robatsch vs F J Perez Perez, 1963 1-0
Robatsch vs Tal, 1960 1/2-1/2
Robatsch vs T van Scheltinga, 1963 1-0
Robatsch vs Weghofer, 1955 1-0
Robatsch vs Hertneck, 1994 1-0
Robatsch vs Letelier, 1964 1-0

NOTABLE TOURNAMENTS: [what is this?]
Havana (1965)
Hastings 1961/62 (1961)
Vinkovci (1968)
IBM Amsterdam (1972)

GAME COLLECTIONS: [what is this?]
1964 Capablanca memorial by gauer
1963 Capablanca memorial by gauer
1962 Beverwijk Hoogovens by jww

Could include a new section called

"NOTABLE TEAM TOURNAMENTS AND OLYMPIADS"

as example. This would highlight more their team motivated player.

kingscrusher: Just one more note here: Robatsch btw got a Gold medal on board 1 in the 1960 Chess Olympiad :

http://www.olimpbase.org/1960/1960i...

But in a previous example I found, apparently also Najdorf got medals at Olympiads - these Olympiad achievements in particular I really feel need greater highlighting as part of the current player template.

Domdaniel: <kingscrusher> has a point here: it may be worthwhile to single out Olympiads in some way, for the reasons he cites.

On the other hand, there are players who do worse in Olympiads and team events.

Good afternoon.

Might you promote the ChessBookForum chessforum to a proper spot on the front page, now that it is a Cg.com "eternal" feature?

As it stands, it only appears on the bottom of the "Example Search" list, and then only periodically.

I think it would benefit the site if you advertised this general interest forum on the front page, in the "What's New" section at the top.

If that means you need to convert the forum to an actual page, like other cg.com official features, then I see no reason not to do that either.

We administrators of the ChessBookForum- and we are legion- would be happy if you did this, and we'd be happy if you kept us as administrators or fired us- either way.

In seven years none of us has had to do any administrating of any kind. If you took over as administrator, I bet you could look forward to seven more years of not having to do any work as well.

Nov-22-15  thegoodanarchist: <<<<chessgames.com: <cg, sorry to whine, but going on your website with my Macbook Air continues to be an absolutely miserable experience. It seems to freeze every 30 seconds or so.>

No need to apologize, this is exactly what this forum was made for.

Unfortunately we don't have a Macbook Air to test on, but I'd like to ask you some more questions about the problem.>>> Send me an email telling me what OS version you are on>

Could you publish the OS version here? I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with the original OS, OS X version 10.6.8, and I don't have any of those problems. I do, however, have an equipment update on the horizon (eventually the processor will fail).

I would like to know what OS to avoid :)

Nov-23-15  Robed.Bishop: <thegoodanarchist> I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but I access the site using Macs. I currently use a Macbook Pro with the latest OS (10.11.1) without a problem.

For a long time I used a Mac Air to access CG through a couple of OSs, again without a problem. The last OS I used with the Air was probably Snow Leopard or Mavericks, though the Air is updated with El Capitan. If you think it would help, I can log into CG with the Air with the latest OS and report back.

He is not freezing when viewing/accessing CG, but when he runs analysis on games.

<offramp> Assuming you're not joking, if you're using Windows 2.5 you shouldn't be connecting to the internets.

Back in those days, Windows 2.5 didn't even have spell check. That's why it spelled "File" as "Filho". I enjoy Filho dough myself, so that wouldn't be much of a problem.

The real problem would be that Windows doesn't support any versions from XP on back. This means that Nigerian Princes could be in charge of your computer every time you log on to the MATRIX.

chessgames.com: <offramp> I have a way of looking that up. Johnny2Bad, longhard669, war dog, gdigesu, russep, Juiceica, sabri, SombreSeraph, Mike2003, kleindouwel, Arograj, checkraise, ranjk, translator, duvvuriravi, AutoDaFe, Q.O.T.D. to name a few. Call them "CG twins". I doubt we'll have a feature to lookup CG twins any time soon, but with clever googling you can do just about anything.

<Stonehenge: <CG> Any chance of getting the missing games of Millionaire Chess (2015)?> I went and got a large number of missing games that weren't available earlier, but I still see some apparent missing games from the leaderboard. I'm not sure if we're still missing games, but if we are, I doubt they can be obtained.

<kingscrusher> <I think the master player pages maybe underplaying the importance of the Chess Olympiads - is this subsumed into "Tournaments" right now?!> Yes, Olympiads (and other events like which are not strictly tournaments) are found in our Tournament Index. That doesn't mean we don't take them seriously, though. Your idea of making statistics related to team performance is a good one. <I really feel need greater highlighting as part of the current player template.> I see what you mean; when you come to the page of a world champion it's clear that it's a special page, for special sections will appear, the biography will be (or should be) of highest quality, etc. The Olympiad MVPs could enjoy similar coverage.

Hi Jess, <Might you promote the ChessBookForum chessforum to a proper spot on the front page, now that it is a Cg.com "eternal" feature? As it stands, it only appears on the bottom of the "Example Search" list, and then only periodically. ... If that means you need to convert the forum to an actual page, like other cg.com official features, then I see no reason not to do that either.> I like the idea of promoting that forum more "properly" — moreover I like the idea of making a "book discussion page" as an official feature that may have a lot more features; namely a genuine database of books and authors to be folded into the rest of the data. The What's New would be a fine place to inaugurate it. Let me "promote" it for you a bit better and we'll revisit the idea of making it an official feature in 2016.

<WannaBe> Thanks so much for the refresher. OK, so <keypusher> is talking about the e8-auto analysis feature. The question is, I suppose, if there is a workaround for platforms that can't run that feature. I can only refer to the pgn4web page that discusses this feature — http://sourceforge.net/p/pgn4web/wi...

offramp: Being on the Europe side I'm a bit vague about what Thanksgiving is about. My knowledge of it is based entirely on a scene in The Addams Family where Wednesday and Pugsley are at Summer Camp. However, that lack of knowledge does not stop me wishing my American cousins a happy thanksgiving.
