 | | Annie K.: <highly-cool> heh... and this is, of course, a reference to the game Highley-Cool, which is remembered fondly, though its page can now only be found at WayBack (and that if you give it some time to load): http://web.archive.org/web/20090110... |

| Dec-11-15 | | AnimusEtOblivio: Is there a particular reason the Holiday Contest banner appears on most pages except the Chessgames.com homepage when a clue is unsolved? I don't remember this being the case in past years. Perhaps it is just a minor glitch? Just thought I would bring up the subject, in case it hasn't been thus far noted. |

| Dec-11-15 | | zanzibar: Well, Mr. <CG>, I assume you're coasting along after putting in all the hard work with kluing... Just wondering about game order, having followed <chancho>'s link: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... I though you ordered the games by date.
If so, why isn't the <London Classic> at the bottom of the list? Just curious... |
|
| Dec-11-15 | | zanzibar: Although they messed up the spelling slightly, there's an entire page on wiki devoted to the <Nukluar> option...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nucular
Some claim it wasn't <AnnieK>, but rather,
<Edward Teller> who first coined the phrase <nuklu>. You can decide for yourself here (00:35):

Me, I'm going with <AnnieK>. |

 | | ChessBookForum:
Thanks so much from all of us!
<What's New
On December 10th, 2015, Chessgames turned 14 years old! Help us celebrate by participating in our annual Holiday Present Hunt, which will begin during the round 6 broadcast of the London Chess Classic. 64 prizes will be distributed over the two weeks leading up to Christmas! ChessBookForum chessforum is a member-moderated area for the discussion, research, and reviews of chess books.> That's pretty good publicity <Daniel> so seriously thank you. We can't wait to see what you have in store for future additions to the forum- such as a chess book database or something like that? |
|
Dec-12-15
 | | chessgames.com: <a chess book database or something like that?> That's exactly the idea. There's an excellent site for book lovers called goodreads.com but they aren't a natural fit for chess books. We could step in and fill that niche. So in addition to player pages, game pages, tournament pages, etc. now we could have a book page. |

 | | Annie K.: <zanz> of course I win - which winter would you rather have, Nukluar, or...?! :p <cg> um, no pressure or anything, but did you happen to notice what <AnimusEtOblivio> said about the Nuklu Banner not showing up on the homepage? ;s The book database sounds very good, btw. :) |
|
Dec-12-15
 | | chessgames.com: I think AnimusEtOblivio (and others) were perplexed that the "unsolved clue warning" vanishes when you visit Player Directory. It happens for technical reasons. The banner on the left side of the homepage should appear for everybody regardless of your "block advertisements" settings. |
|
Dec-12-15
 | | WannaBe: Right now, the face/vase clue is unsolved, but the notification is not on the home page. Just tested it. |
|
| Dec-13-15 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <CG> The banner on the upper left is not an issue. What is missing on the home page is the red, boldface announcement "There is a clue unsolved right now on the Holiday Contest Clues Page! [Official Contest Rules]", in a red box, running across the entire width of the page. |

 | | Domdaniel: <CG> Would you consider introducing typo-sensitivity in game searches? So that if, for example, I'm careless enough to type "Rtlewi" the system understands I want "Rotlewi" and can compensate. As you know, many websites have this function. |
|
Dec-13-15
 | | Domdaniel: <CG> As <Animus>, <MAJ> and others have said: the normal, regular homepage -- not the player directory or other special pages -- does not carry the red top-of-page banner pointing to an unsolved klu. |

<<CG> Would you consider introducing typo-sensitivity in game searches? So that if, for example, I'm careless enough to type "Rtlewi" the system understands I want "Rotlewi" and can compensate.> I remember this exact topic.
I asked about this some time ago, and <Daniel> told me that it's not actually a simple operation to "transform" a search protocol to become as intuitive as say, Google, the example he gave. Apparently this is a difficult and time consuming operation- not an easy thing to just "do." (secretly, I think it might involve top secret espionage to crack the Google "secret crawler protocol naming division for intiuitiveness department"). At any rate, <Daniel> did give a substantive reply to this question a while ago, but as usual I can't be arsed to actually look for the post on SARCH KIBBITZIGN. I'm certain he will remember this though, and be able to correct my paraphrase of what he said. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> Thanks! I admit that I thought this incredibly complicated piece of computer wizardry really ought to have become simple by now... after all, other websites, many of them much more stupid than CG and much less responsive to the wishes of their users, offer this feature. But if you say it's hard, it's hard. Sigh. |

Dec-13-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Jessia> And I don't make *tat* many mispeelings, yanno... |

Dec-13-15
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Omdaniel> I shouldn't have thought so. I hadn't noticed any misJonathan Speelmans at all myself. I *can* report that your new handle puts me in a rather meditative state. Most refreshing, sir.
I'm sure <Daniel> will elaborate on what he actually told me, once he returns from his latest important business trip to the Crab Nebula. |

Has anyone noticed that the "forum activity page" is filling up again with important business and gossip? A renaissance of the cg.com social media function?
IT'S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE |

Dec-13-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Jeffica> Is the Crap Nepula safe these days? I worry about those Space Crap Jihadis... |
|
Dec-13-15
 | | Domdaniel: "Chessgames is, like, facebook for chessnuts"... that's what I tell da kidz. |
|
| Dec-13-15 | | Boomie: <Dom> You have to be careful this time of year lest your chessnuts be roasted on an open fire. What's that smell? |
|
Dec-13-15
 | | Domdaniel: <Boomie> Must be the Crap Nepula... |

 | | chessgames.com: <MostlyAverageJoe: What is missing on the home page is the red, boldface announcement "There is a clue unsolved right now on the Holiday Contest Clues Page! [Official Contest Rules]", in a red box, running across the entire width of the page.> Oh, right you are, we are so sorry. It is fixed now and will remain fixed for the rest of the contest. |
|
Dec-13-15
 | | Penguincw: Thanks for fixing it <cg>. Makes a <huge> difference. :) |
|
Dec-14-15
 | | chessgames.com: There's a new intermediate level of moderation introduced. I doubt it will be directly noticed by any of the gentle frequenters of this forum, but for those possessed of internet Tourette's syndrome, messages like this may appear from time to time: (WARNING: Extreme language NSFW) http://imgur.com/8V9bOvv This new "mini probation" is just a 12 hour mini-ban. It allows us to put somebody on probation without going through all the awkward aftermath. A rule of thumb will be that if it's not the first time we've deleted a post by an account for (obscenity / racism / violence / etc.) we will put a 12 ban on. If it's been multiple offenses it will increase to 24 or up to 72 hours. I hope this doesn't come across looking iron-fisted; we're just trying to keep the peace. Happy holidays. |

Dec-14-15
 | | WannaBe: <CG> I am fully supportive of this! |
