chessgames.com: I took a peek in the latest TWIC issue and just for example, the "6th Arco Christmas Open" is not particularly important. There are a few masters there and we'd be happy to take some games that might have a pretty combination, but all too many of the games are like this one:

[Event "6th Arco Christmas Open"]
[Site "Arco ITA"]
[Date "2015.12.30"]
[Round "7.41"]
[White "Montori,Giorgia"]
[Black "Rigo,Nicola"]
[Result "0-1"]
[BlackElo "1307"]
[ECO "C44"]
[Opening "Scotch opening"]
[WhiteFideId "2838767"]
[BlackFideId "892564"]
[EventDate "2015.12.26"]

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 Bd6 4. Bg5 Nf6 5. Bc4 O-O 6. O-O b6 7. Bd2 Nxe4 8. Bd5 Nxd2 9. Qxd2 Re8 10. Bb3 Bb7 11. c3 Qf6 12. Bc2 e4 13. Re1 exf3 14. Rxe8+ Rxe8 15. Na3 Re2 16. Qd1 Qh6 17. g3 Qh3 18. Qf1 Qxf1+ 19. Kxf1 Ba6 20. c4 Bxa3 21. Bd3 Rxb2 22. Re1 Nxd4 23. Re3 b5 24. c5 Bxc5 25. Re5 Ne6 26. Rf5 Rxf2+ 27. Ke1 Re2+ 28. Bxe2 fxe2 29. Kxe2 b4+ 30. Kd2 Bc4 31. a4 bxa3 32. Kc2 a2 33. I actually loaded that into a PGN viewer. I would never disparage beginners or poke fun of their poor moves, but I just don't see the purpose of immortalizing a game like this in the main database.

From time to time somebody will want to save a game like this for reasons somewhat personal to themselves, and that's fine. As I intimated, one day we plan on offering that as a option.

Jan-09-16  Benzol: <chessgames.com> <From the homepage:

New Zealand Open (2016)
Jan 2-10
Devonport, Auckland
Players include David Howell, Nigel Short, Gawain Jones, Alexandr Hilario, and Richard Taylor.>

Wish I'd known about this page sooner, could have saved me a lot of work. BTW David Howell isn't playing this year.

:)

Jan-10-16  zanzibar: Returning to the topic of DB collections - I would think it useful to err on the side of inclusion for your users.

For example, I would imagine there are many users in the 1800-2200 rating range here on <CG>. They might like to use <CG> to prepare against similarly rated opponents in an upcoming tournament.

Of course some rating floor applies to the DB, in general. Certainly for the opening book statistics, and other features designed for the discerning user. And it could be a user adjustable setting, restricting general searches to just the high level players by default.

But it seems desirable to include games of lower rated players as well.

For example, Swiss tournaments are notorious for having mismatched pairings during the early rounds. Being a "completist", I would certainly want all the games of, say, the top-10 finishers included for a tournament, if only to get the correct leader board from a <CG> PGN download of the tournament.

That would mean games with low rated players in the DB. Of course, these players wouldn't have all their games included by default. But including their games against higher rated players would prove educational - there would be a sampling of games showing how to win games outside the rarefied stratagems of GM play. (And we might get some non-Berlins in reply to 1.e4).

Moreover, any upsets of a higher rated player is always interesting.

Additionally, mismatched games might be a good source of positions useful for tactical puzzles. Lines which actually get played out over the board, and don't just exist as unplayed variations.

Jan-12-16  zanzibar: <AnnieK> delayed thanks for that.

I've always considered my fairly patient, but might be mistaken on the matter. I know I sometimes try other people's patience though - ha.

Anyways, I haven't finished on the topic, and might have a little more to post later.

But your link is good, and dovetailing into another db issue I'd like to revisit.

Jan-13-16  Abdel Irada: <I've always considered my fairly patient>

Almost patient enough to finish typing the word "myself." :-D

Jan-13-16  zanzibar: <Abdel> yeah, I spotted that too. Good for a chuckle at my.

Annie K.: So young, how sad! :(

Can we please have this game I Bukavshin vs Morozevich, 2015 (or a better game, if you can find one on short notice) for GotD tomorrow?

I don't really feel a pun is very necessary under the circumstances, but if we must have one, and if this is the game you show, maybe 'Goodnight Sweet Prince' would be appropriate - this is a game from the "Kings vs Princes" Nutcracker Match, with Bukavshin playing for the Princes.

Jan-13-16  zanzibar: <WannaBe> thanks for that bit of info. It never would have occurred to me to check out <crafty>'s bio.

Curious that he would make a reappearance after so many years of inaction.

Still, I'd like to have the ability to insert small font into any one of my posts... I suppose I'm not able to then?

  kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com

Is it possible to change the very generic 'Sicilian Closed' classification to the Grand Prix attack - after the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 (something) 3.f4 ?!

e.g.

Short vs Yifan Hou, 2012

The delayed f4 is a better way of playing the McDonnell attack without allowing the 'Tal Gambit'. It is generally classified as the Grand Prix attack.

Jan-14-16  zanzibar: SCID is a little more particular, requiring 2...Nc6 in the 3-move sequence:

<1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.f4> = <Grand Prix>

.

Jan-14-16  MarkFinan: Please take a look at the screenshot I just sent you.

Thank you.

Jan-14-16  zanzibar: Again, issues with <CG> corrupting links:

The Caissars chessforum (kibitz #1777)

To which <Switch> replies:

<Not here, no; very much off-topic. On any other page... still no. The current system works as long as you know the ropes; any URL starting with "http://" can be turned into a functional link with a bit of percent-encoding.

Yes, many forums offer more powerful ways to link, but this is a site where that power would be abused and corrupted.>

I don't see how allowing vanilla links would be more abused than the current link handling.

It doesn't make sense to me, if anything, it would be less likely to be abused.

chessgames.com: <zanzibar> There clearly is a bug when you combine the features of headerless URLs (ones that don't start with http:// and are in fact not truly URLs) and the word-wrap feature. There are other bugs as well that we've discussed in the past.

Headerless URLs are not a big concern; just don't use them. But of course there's room for improvement.

Perhaps some syntax could mean "this is a literal URL, don't change a byte!" The format might look like ## http://www.twitter.com ## and then our only concern would be URLs that contain the string ##
