| Feb-28-16 | | Chess Is More: The Shirov bio is a mess. "Soviet Latvia"!? Nobody says that. It's Latvian SSSR. That is what's correct. |
|
| Feb-28-16 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> Just wanted to show a google search over on another forum, which I would have liked to use the qualifier: -site: chessgames.com
But the url gets munched during <CG> parsing... <all-in-text "Soviet Latvia" -site:chessgames.com> site:chessgames.com">https://www.google.com/search?q=all... Notice I already went out of my <& q u o t ; way & q u o t ;> |
|
| Feb-28-16 | | Chess Is More: As zanzibar made me aware of over on the Shirov player page, I mistakenly wrote 'SSSR', it's 'SSR'. |

 | | Tabanus: <So, not to worry, everthing you ever wrote on the internet, and every will write, will be preserved.> But not everything you wrote. At least not yet: https://web.archive.org/web/2016012..., AFAICS only the front page is archived. The Machine's archived Annie K. YouTube page: none of the links in it work for me there. My collections in CG: I checked a dozen. They display fine, except at least one: https://web.archive.org/save/http:/.... And in 100 years from now? Perhaps this library needs to improve their services. Not sure what CG can do more, except being crawled by this thing. |

 | | Annie K.: <The Machine's archived Annie K. YouTube page: none of the links in it work for me there.> Hmm, never occurred to me to check. :) I think their webpage spiders don't save active content (such as videos) - but it's possible that their (relatively new) media files backup projects do, so that would be the place to look. <They display fine, except at least one: > That looks like a charset (character set) incompatibility, and especially the kind of thing you get when you copy text from Word. Word has a very nasty tendency to replace standard characters with its own "fancy" versions, that can't be read by other programs, and this is the sort of gibberish you get when you try to upload its output. It may display to you ok, if your computer uses the same charset, but the WayBack Machine's settings can be different. Hence the oft-repeated advice to uploaders never to use Word (MSWord) for anything they mean to upload. Work on WordPad or NotePad! :) For that specific collection, I would suggest that you replace all the characters in that corrupted table with text copied from NotePad or WordPad, and then request a re-achiving of the page. <Perhaps this library needs to improve their services.> Which they do work on. And since they are eventually going to get around to making new backups of anything they
already archived, you can be sure that sooner or later they will get their backups right on their own too. :) |
|
| Feb-29-16 | | zanzibar: <TAB> I would suggest making local backups of each page you contributed on <CG> to a local file on your PC.
Then you could assemble them all together and print them out. Or collect them together into a PDF. That would make it very easy for you to self-publish a book: http://www.harvard.com/clubs_servic... E.g. if you were in the vicinity of Harvard Square one of these days. As we all know, paper has the only proven record for long term durability and preservation of information. Once you self-publish your book you could donate a copy to your local library, and distribute various copies to friends and family. That would give your work a fair chance of surviving 100 years. Once it gets to the grandchildren's generation, it's a much more dicey proposition. * * * * *
By the way, I would think Canivore does preserve all your writings, however many links or pages down. Of course, you don't get them back from it so easily. |

 | | Tabanus: <Annie> I'm using WordPad sometimes and perhaps there. Thanks for the advice! <and then request a re-achiving of the page.> Ah yes, I finally found out about that. The Anna Belle Lynn page was <not> in WB, but I requested it copied and now it's there: https://web.archive.org/web/2016022.... Perhaps I'm still not too old to learn ;) But are bios missing from WB, is not the whole site waybacked.. <zanzibar: <TAB> I would suggest making local backups of each page you contributed on <CG>> Hmm. Maybe when all WC qual. events are in!? With co-authors. I suppose we could take responsibility also, and not blame everything on CG. |

 | | Annie K.: <Tab> yes, sorry, on second thought WordPad isn't great either - NotePad is the ideal program to work on for anything intended to be uploaded. :) I'm glad you found the request archiving option, but this is what I meant earlier when I asked you not to try to archive the whole site manually! You'd just burn yourself out. ;s It's true that they don't archive everything yet, but they are archiving more pages every year, so it's best to just trust them to get around to filling most gaps in by themselves eventually. After all, <cg> is not going anywhere any time soon, AFAIK. ;) |

| Mar-01-16 | | whiteshark: <ceegee> The <2016 FIDE Women’s World Chess Championship> match between the current World Champion <Mariya Muzychuk> and her challenger <Hou Yifan> will start tomorrow (2nd March) in Lviv, Ukraine. Official site: www.lviv2016.fide.com |

| Mar-01-16 | | zanzibar: <Tab> How do you request Wayback to archive a page? |
|
Mar-01-16
 | | Annie K.: <zanz> whenever you request a page they don't have archived, and that page is "live" on the Internet, you will be asked if you want them to archive it. I think there's an option to ask for a new backup for something they already have too, but I'm not sure off the cuff how that goes - in any case, if you look at a page at the WB site, I believe that improves that page's chances of being automatically crawled again, anyway. If you're trying to get the WB to archive your blog's pages, just go to your main page at WB that <Tab> linked to, and start clicking on all the links. :) |

Muzychuk have white for game 1, will CG be carrying the game live? (Not that it will affect me too much, way early in the morning for moi) |
|
| Mar-01-16 | | zanzibar: <AnnieK> thanks for that update. I guess it's not your Father's wayback anymore. I seem to remember it trying to redirect you to the original site if the page was still around. I also remember some kind of time limit involved too, that it wouldn't let you access pages younger than a certain limit (I seem to recall a period like 5 years being involved). So now we have same day service? My how times have changed! |

 | | Tabanus: <zanzibar: <Tab> How do you request Wayback to archive a page?> Just paste the URL into https://archive.org/web/ and click on Browse History. If they don't have it, you get the message <Hrm. Wayback Machine doesn't have that page archived. This page is available on the web! Help make the Wayback Machine more complete! Save this url in the Wayback Machine> and click on the last sentence. |

 | | Tabanus: <Annie K.: <zanz> whenever you request a page they don't have archived, and that page is "live" on the Internet, you will be asked if you want them to archive it.> I found that too. (And I found no archived player bios yet, only tournament bios apparently archived in September 2015.) <I think there's an option to ask for a new backup for something they already have> That I did not find. Q: Let's say CG goes down. Will it (or the last archived parts of it) then turn up in a Google search? Can a website owner make some kind of special arrangement with the WB machine? "Can you crawl me harder", so to speak. Or crawl me all over once a year. Or ideally, "Display all my contents in a Google search when I die". Can nothing be done? For example via the Library of Congress, who uses it. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Let's say CG goes down. Will it (or the last archived parts of it) then turn up in a Google search?> About all of this angst of the impermanence of this world: we can only do our best. Fortunately computers are very good at duplicating data, and that's all we need to make sure that the CG database lives on. There are backups from a day ago, a week ago, sometime last month, and miscellaneous backups further. There's a copy of the entire server at my house from a week ago, about 100 miles away from the location of the actual server. I can imagine nightmare scenarios where we're forced to go back to the previous day's backup, or even several weeks to the previous month's backup—even though neither of those things has ever happened. But to imagine Google's cache or the Wayback Machine having more of Chessgames than us? Impossible. |
|
| Mar-02-16 | | Benzol: Well I hope it's not a case of "Famous Last Words".
:) |
|
Mar-02-16
 | | Tabanus: Oh dear. The angst belongs to <this> world but this is really about preserving past worlds. Example (one of many): we spent a lot of energy on finding out about Frederick Baldwin Arnold. The WB machine archived this page in August last year at https://web.archive.org/web/2014081..., i. e. before we worked on it, and this is the only player bio I've found on WB so far. Since August last year they have crawled this site repeatedly, but not managed to save even one new player bio? And even if there are full copies at your house and elsewhere, what does that help if there's nobody around (in the future) to make it available. Let's hope for a "full crawl" soon ;) |

Paste the URL into "Save Page Now", and voila: https://web.archive.org/save/http:/.... So we can save our own work into the WBM, but how available will it be in the future. |

| Mar-02-16 | | zanzibar: <RE: Buster Brown Lists> <chessgames> OK, that's good stuff (tm), I think. Will you be putting a star on the game pages and formalize your listings? Wonder how well it does going back in time.
BTW- I was going to ask for examples of what you meant by "anomalies", and then I spotted this: D Zardus vs A Steventon, 1986 |
