| Sep-10-16 | | Tiggler: <chessgames.com: Is there any way to know the exact board pairings in advance, coloration and everything?> Not until after 10am Baku time are the board pairings with player names announced. Here: http://chess-results.com/tnr232875.... The evening before we know which team has white on the odd number boards. Here: http://chess-results.com/tnr232875.... |

| Sep-10-16 | | Tiggler: <WannaBe: Hmmmm.... CCCP! CCCP! CCCP! CCCP! CCCP!> Last time (1990) CCCP appeared at the chess Olympiad, they won gold. This was their team: Ivanchuk, Gelfand, Beliavsky, Yusupov, Yudasin, Bareev
(Two alternates were allowed then)
Only Bareev is at this years contest, playing for Canada. Silver was won by USA:
Seirawan, Gulko, Christiansen, Benjamin, Fedorowicz, De Firmian And Bronze by England:
Short, Speelman, Nunn, Adams, Chandler, Hodgson
Note that Short and Adams are back again this year with reversed board numbers. Hungary won the women's gold, with three Polgar sisters. More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/29th_... |

| Sep-10-16 | | Tiggler: Board pairings are up (11.03 PST) at the link I gave above. Karjakin-Caruana
Nakamura-Kramnik
Nepomniatchi-So
Robson-Grischuk
Total rating difference between the teams is 18. (Average 4.5). Hard to chose which board to watch, but I suggest the top board. |

Sep-10-16
 | | Domdaniel: <WannaBe> -- <CCCP!>
Brilliant. Years ago, not long before the Soviet Union imploded, I was in a pub in Dublin watching Ireland play the USSR in the European Football finals. It was the first time Ireland had qualified, they'd beaten England in the previous match, and the atmosphere was feverish.
Naturally, the place was packed with Ireland fans -- plus one lone voice shouting for 'Russia'. He wasn't even Russian, going by his accent -- more likely an old left-wing supporter of the communist USSR. But he was tolerated, in an amused way. Nobody really seemed to mind this guy shouting for the opposition. There were smiles all round. It ended 1-1, so everyone went home happy.
Like USA-Russia in Baku ... ?? |

| Sep-10-16 | | zanzibar: <CCCP>?! Y'all are pining for days gone by... |
|
| Sep-10-16 | | Tiggler: <WannaBe: Wayne Gretzky is the coach?!> The ghost of Robert Fischer, I think. |
|
| Sep-10-16 | | zanzibar: <Tiggler> You think? You must hitting the suds too: https://usatthebiglead.files.wordpr... |
|
| Sep-11-16 | | greed and death: <WannaBe: Wayne Gretzky is the coach?!> I never realized until now how similar Gretzky and Fischer look(ed) |
|
| Sep-11-16 | | Tiggler: We were looking for him all those years and never suspected for a moment that he had taken up hockey. |
|
| Sep-11-16 | | Abdel Irada: ∞
I think he'd have preferred boxing.
Individual, strategic *and* tactical sports better suited Fischer's style and ego; can you imagine him fitting in as an equal member of a team? ∞ |
|
| Sep-11-16 | | zanzibar: Well, he only relented and played in the 1970 Olympiad when all the other team members agreed to call him... <The Great One>. "Oh Great One, would you please pass the salt?" |
|
| Sep-12-16 | | diceman: <WinKing: Great cartoon @ chess24 of So, Naka & Fab.> Put Fischer behind So, not Naka.
He's playing more like him. |
|
| Sep-12-16 | | WinKing: Yeah <diceman> for sure. Wes has 5 wins with the black pieces. Very Fischeresque! I'd say he is playing pretty well indeed. |
|
| Sep-12-16 | | Tiggler: Who says Kasparov is the greatest ever? How many Stanley Cups did he win? |
|
| Sep-13-16 | | WinKing: GM So should win gold on board 3. Now we have to wait to see if the USA men's team wins gold or silver. It all comes down to the tiebreakers. |

 | | offramp: From the front page:
<Chess Olympiad
Baku, Azerbaijan
Sep 1-13
The USA won their first gold since 1976 featuring Caruana, Nakamura, and Robson.> Could you add, "...and an unidentified fourth player"? |
|
Sep-13-16
 | | WannaBe: We know who the 4th player is, Wayne Gretzky. |
|
| Sep-13-16 | | Alien Math: TWITCH TAKES ON CHESS GRANDMASTER: 6,000 GAMERS BEAT CHESS CHAMPION ON THIRD TRY http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming... Known as the Twitch vs Pure Chess Grandmaster challenge, the stream loaded up Ripstone’s Pure Chess and connected it up with stream viewers and international grandmaster and British chess champion Simon Williams. |

| Sep-14-16 | | Appaz: On the front page it suddenly says "Don't let time run out! Your premium membership will expire in 0 days. Click here to renew.", although I should recently have renewed it. Does anyone else see this? |
|
| Sep-14-16 | | Boomie: <Does anyone else see this?> Yes. An ugly red banner on the main page tells me I have 0 days...Gotta be quick about it, then. My membership is good until December. Looks like CG has been hacked or there is some faulty code. |
