| Jan-13-17 | | Boomie: <zanzibar: <CG> just wondering, have you used <ChessTempo>> The Chess Tactics training tool is a lot of fun and has to pay dividends. I haven't used any other part of Chess Tempo. |

| Jan-13-17 | | zanzibar: <Boomie> <... has to pay dividends> Just wondering what exactly this means.
I'm also curious if you've used the <CT> forums, or even the problem comment features? |

<z> I believe I can help with this. Years ago I got up every morning at 5am to do an hour of tactics training on CHEESE TEMPO. I did this for several months, but it didn't actually improve my results in real games against people. If you become a registered chess offender on that site, whenever you can average over 90% on a session of an hour or more, the site is legally obligated to share stock with you. You can receive the money via paypal, or if you don't trust paypal (I don't), I can collect for you and then snail mail you the money in some safe form, such as ducats or pfennigs. Just email me the name of your bank, branch number, account number, and 4 digit password, and you'll be in business! #############
On a rare frivolous note, I didn't get any dividends during my time with CHEESE TEMPO. Actually I discussed this with our esteemed colleague <Fusilli>, who told me "yes, that's why the Cg.com Guess the Move feature is much more likely to improve your actual chess play- because you don't know for sure there is some excellent move to find, as you do in every tactics exercise." That's a paraphrase, so if the good <Fusilly> wishes to sue me for defamation, I'll plead NOLO CONTENDRE, much like the great <Spiro Agnew>. |

| Jan-13-17 | | zanzibar: <JFQ> OK, but I still am wondering about <Boomie>'s language construct. I train a lot on <CT>, and enjoy it. I think it has helped my play, but am well aware that I rarely get to play all those fun tactics (mostly because they don't show up in my games, and when they do I all too often miss them). * * * * *
I'm actually fishing to see if <CG> people are aware of the features that <CT> offers it's users. (1) The ability to edit a comment (until a newer comment is posted). (2) The ability to display playable boards, with ML (main lines) and subvariations. (3) The ability to cut-and-paste the FEN from these boards. (4) The ability to include graphics in a post, e.g. http://chesstempo.com/chess-forum/t... etc., etc. |
|
| Jan-13-17 | | zanzibar: <JFQ> <NOLO CONTENDRE>?! Never, you'll always be a <CONTENDRE> in my book. |
|
| Jan-14-17 | | Boomie: <zanzibar: <Boomie> <... has to pay dividends>> That is an idiom meaning beneficial for whatever, in this case chess strength. Jessie makes a good point about knowing there is a winning tactic in the position. Real chess prowess is creating positions in which there is a winning tactic. |

 | | Richard Taylor: The Oceania Zonal started with in total 240 participants. Very sadly one potential participant, a young man from Fiji had drowned so we started with a minutes silence. I had a draw today with the top (active) rated NZ player (in the Oceania Zonal). We were on board 7. It was a tough game, I felt like resigning about move 15 as I misplayed a Classical Sicilian but eventually found a counter attack and some nice tactics to force a draw or he would have lost. He wasn't pleased...IM Gary Lane (of Australia) was encouraging when I told him. Gary is playing, and is very supportive, a very nice fellow. Author of a number of chess books. I have one of his on the Scotch. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <Domdaniel: <CG> Go on, then, do this thing for Richard <aka Rich Tea> in Na Zillun. Please. We'll all feel better, even in these apocalyptic times.> !! I probably left it a bit late to notify. But if they can get the PGNs they could list it. I left it late as I was not sure if I was going to give up chess or not and I decided as the tournament is literally only about 1 mile from my place... It's not for me though as it is part of the international chess jigsaw...the young player IM Anton Smirnov is the strongest rated player. He is quite young. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: I found the PGN... but unfortunately, it's missing some fairly important details, like the results and the moves. http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve...

http://www.newzealandchess.co.nz/Ve... That round 2 PGN is missing the results and moves isn't too surprising, since that round hasn't been played yet; but round 1 has been over for a while already. Hopefully the moves will appear eventually. |

 | | chessgames.com: <CG is very slow atm.> I'm aware. At first I thought it was traffic for Tata Steel but it seems to be something else. <Bad Request: Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.> That atypical. Some googling indicates that it can be indicative of a corrupted cookie although I wouldn't mess around with that unless it continues chronically. E.g. see https://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.p... |

A familiar problem. A couple of years back I didn't enter for a tournament which was held very near where I was living. Looking back, I don't know why.> I was going to stop playing chess altogether because of generally poor results. But I went to order some hardware from my old friend Paul Spiller who is in fact the organiser and we got talking about it, and slowly I swung to it. The place is quite beautiful. Where I am, Auckland there are a lot of extinct volcanoes and the basin which is part of a tidal inlet really but is called the Tamaki River, and the basin is called Waipuna which I think means something like water fish or water eel. That is the name of the hotel From it you can see the small mountain Maungarei (watchful mountain which I often walk up) and the basin itself where Maori used to make canoes (waka) and sail North or South. Auckland is on an isthmus...The basin erupted twice they found fairly recently. Last time about 40,000 years ago I think. It is interesting. But it is Australians, NZrs, Fijians, Palauans and a few other Pacific nations. The next one geographically is the Asian which a Malaysian player was saying is simply too strong as you can imagine. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <chessgames.com: <but if they can get the PGNs they could list it.> Yes, that's the bottom line. I was going through the site looking for PGN but didn't find it offhand. Anybody?> I think that those that they relied on doing it in the past those cant do it this year. With so many players maybe that is an added problem. Some time ago I talked to an arbiter and he said that, in theory, they could have some kind of electronic hook up so games were automatically processed. (He said the reason wasn't technical but connected to the morass of FIDE rules). This is here yet. Obviously at Tata etc they have immediate hookup. But here I cant even get the live games. They use a system called Vega, I don't know anything about it. I really don't know if they can get games up. I might be able to get the main games later from a down load. I mean say, the top 50 or so or something like that or top 20... The Australians are in the lead. GM Illingworth beat my friend Leonard McClaren in what was a 4 and 1/2 hour struggle. At the end Leonard was tired and a bit down but that is understandable. I lost to an Aussie in the morning...drifted into a bad position then missed winning chances...There are so many players I keep seeing people I know I didn't realise were there! But the pgns, it they are ever going to appear, are not there. Maybe it is simply too big a job with 240 players... |
