Richard Taylor: How do you get an evaluation will there be a facility at any position arising in the opening explorer?

One problem with evaluations in the opening and middle game is that positions are so complex it needs a computer that can also explain why moves are made. (Susan Polgar said something to this effect once). Sometimes I can work out the strange computer moves and that is good, but in some positions. I have the free Komodo which is good but on my computer too slow. So trying to see where Xiong erred against Wesley So is hard as it seems to go to the opening. It seems almost that his judgment error is part of opening theory which is a worry.

But an evaluation system is useful if used wisely.

saffuna: <chessalem><The clear difference is that it is clearly an improved version because it is more concise yet complete, accurate, reliable and comprehensible.>

How can it be complete if it doesn't even mention his time at WEbster University?

Apr-15-17  rogge: Old bio, new bio, just make it shorter, please :)
Apr-15-17  Tiggler: I get that you want to change the subject regarding Wesleygate (your term), but this would be a good time to disclose which other players have what privileges on their player pages, such as input on their bios and Userforum rights over the kibitzing. GMs Keene and Short, particularly.

Apr-15-17  chessalem: Wesley's entered into a match with George Meier upon his arrival at Webster to determine board placing for the team...Other tournaments would follow culminating at the first edition of the Millionaires open when he earned $100,000 for winning the tourney- enough pocket money to severe ties with self serving Truong and company.

The tourneys and games he played while enrolled at Webster- It's all in his bio.

saffuna: It didn't mention Webster University in <the text> above the list of tournament results.

I CLEARLY wrote that in my first post about it.

And Susan Polgar is not even mentioned in the bio. Whatever anybody's opinion of her, or So's opinion, that is simply ridiculous from any journalistic or historical point of view.

It's like writing a biography of Michael Jordan and not mentioning that he played for the University of North Carolinaor that he was coached by Dean Smith.

Apr-15-17  Chessgames Bookie: The Spring Leg of the ChessBookie game has begun. Games have been posted so let the betting begin! Good Luck to all!

Some of what we will be covering is listed in the 'ANNOUNCEMENTS' box on the main page of the ChessBookie forum.

saffuna: <chessalem> With that comment you just conceded you are dead wrong.
Apr-15-17  zanzibar: <chessalem> cutting and pasting So's tournament record is a bit of wasted time and space.

Also, this isn't Rogoff - a more measured mode of argumentation would be appreciated. Nor do people need a super high rating to contribute to this discussion.

I've looked at the archived versions of So's page and there are important biographical details now missing - several of which others have mentioned, Webster and who first taught him are important items.

<CG> shouldn't blindly accept all assertions from any GM - historical accuracy has shown many cases where a GM says one thing but the facts say otherwise.

That's not a knock on So, it's just a general statement.

If <CG> mistakenly gave So the impression that he has sole responsibility for his bio on <CG>, then we do have a problem. Obviously several very valued contributors feel very strongly about this.

Of course, <CG> could allow such a compromise system, i.e. giving any player the ability to submit their own profile page, as a supplement to the general bio that the historians/editors currently produce.

Lastly, I still think that the full-blown listing of all tournaments is much too detailed for the first page of a bio (especially for such a prolific and accomplished a player as So). It needs to be available via a link instead.

Apr-15-17  chessalem: Wesley was allowed by CG to strike out any post of a kibitzer he does not like and deny a kibitzer's posting right to his page.

If CG is well intent in trimming his editing privilege, it must not only apply to his bio but to his player page as well. Obviously, several very valued posters who have their kibitzes fried extra crispy and page access denied feel very strongly about this as well.

Now CG wants the journalistic rights of bistro writers restored. It is only fair and decent that the bills of rights including the right to travel and enter the Wesley So page and post thereat be reinstated as well.

This is after all a democractic online community. Or is it?

Apr-15-17  morfishine: Disregard all comments by <chessalem>

He's a certified numb-skull

Apr-15-17  zanzibar: <<chesssalem> Wesley was allowed by CG to strike out any post of a kibitzer he does not like and deny a kibitzer's posting right to his page.>

Yes, this is an important point to note.

I generally have stayed away from So's page - but I remember this feature being added. Its significance really only comes into full focus now.

<CG>'s earlier precedence suggested this current imbroglio would result.

Apr-15-17  chessalem: <Disregard all comments>

Or you could also put a kibitzer on ignore. This is perfectly fine.

But striking out his post and revoking his travel visa - is CG adopting a Trump like kind of leadership?

saffuna: It's perfectly understandable for a player to be permitted to delete posts on his page which he considers offensive. No problem there. I remember Susan Polgar left the site because one poster insisted on calling her Mrs. Truong.

The bio is something else. It's approved by chessgames or chessgames editors, and with the intent of being as complete and accurate as possible within the space limit.

Apr-15-17  zanzibar: <<saff> It's perfectly understandable for a player to be permitted to delete posts on his page which he considers offensive. No problem there. >

On his/her profile page, yes.

But on the player page? No, probably a bad precedence, in retrospect.

Freedom of speech kind of issue.

saffuna: Could be. But I remember the abuse Susan Polgar took on her page, while she was posting.
Apr-15-17  Alien Math: One way to scare off any potential biographers,

<chessalem: for members here of biographer's bistro, kindly post your resume to assess your fitness to the position and responsibilities as biographers. Kindly include your opinion of what should comprise as parts and elements of an effective biography without googling.

What is your style of writing compared to other biographers listed below:

Your response will guide me to determine why should I prefer your biography over Wesley's?

please don't forget to include your literary degree and the university you graduated from.> Biographer Bistro

Apr-15-17  Tiggler: <zanzibar>:<Also, this isn't Rogoff >

I cannot resist the opportunity to repost here <Jambow>'s classic gong-ringer posted today on another forum:

<Jambow>:<Sounds like the Rogoff septictank is full the sewage is backing up here now. >

US Championship (2017)

Apr-15-17  Tiggler: <zanzibar> Re posts on a player's page. It is actually not a new precedent: observant users have noticed that any post on the player page of <Raymond Keene> that refers to his well-documented instances of plagiarism have a very short half-live before they disappear.

GM Keene's bio is mercifully short. Any lengthy bio, if honest, could not fail to mention his numerous scandals. I can live with the compromise: if you don't want uncomfortable disclosures, agree to keep the bio nugatory.

Apr-16-17  TheFocus: <chessalem> <Your response will guide me to determine why should I prefer your biography over Wesley's? please don't forget to include your literary degree and the university you graduated from.>

Could you provide your liteary degree and the university you graduated from?

Why should we just accept you as an authority without proof?

And before you ask, I don't have a degree or graduated from a university, however, I am a professional writer and editor.

Richard Taylor: <offramp: I would like to complain about various acts of evallity and trolliness that may or may not have taken place against other poster OR POSTERS. These have occurred at various dates over the past years, or not. I have sent private emails to those either concerned or not but I have or have not received any reply. The enormities normally take place on the Rogoff page. Hence the old English poem:
<If you accidentally land on Kenneth S Rogoff, Go back one page, then log off.>>

Wonderfully concise! The Man to Edit W So's Page, I say!

saffuna: Concerning Raymond Keene and Wesley So:

Keene was never a threat to become World Champion is. So is. Having a historically accurate So biography is more important.
