Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Maybe it's my feelthy mind ... but is that a cryptic way of telling us that Every sperm whale is sacred ...?

Mobius Dick, even.

Domdaniel: Well hi there <deerslayer888>. Are you related to <Jonah> over in the Nickel game?

I hope those deer are properly dressed, along with anyone else you slay.

Just to be clear: a 'pinkie' is a pink-skinned person's littlest finger, yes?

The movie Brighton Rock had a young Richard Attenborough as a teenage hoodlum named Pinky. The lesser-known film Joyriders has a 1980s version named Perky.

One day I'll write a definitive study of juvenile delinquency, from Pinky to Perky.

Domdaniel: <Jess> So I see. Wearing my 'scientific' hat, I am still entertaining various hypotheses...

More tea, Mrs Hypothesis?
- Certainly not, young man!

Anyhoo, this is what I've come up with:

(a) Fenimore stumbled on this place by accident and doesn't know how to leave.

(b) I'm being stalked.

(c) I am, in fact, a bot, and Fenimore is the latest bot-repellent software.

(d) Suck-poppetry has returned.

(e) Evolution.

(f) There is no (g).

As for <what should I do?>, it's hard to beat the Emperor's advice. Marcus Aurelius says: "Consider the individual nature of each thing - what is it? What does it seek to become?"

Or something of that sort. I always mix up the <nature of evil> with the <evil of nature>.

Domdaniel: A chap named Nigel Short has been in the news in England. It seems he posted mildly disparaging comments about some company on a website forum - and it sued him for libel, which you can do under English law.

Then he got cancer. Then the company dropped its case, but has refused to say why, or whether potential headlines like 'Megacorp Bankrupts Cancer Man' played a part.

Nothing at all to do with the other Nigel Short, who is a non-cancerous chess grandmaster. Of course.

What was the Megacorp's name? Er, I've forgotten. Lucky, eh.

Domdaniel: OK, the 'megacorp' was actually a football club, Sheffield Wednesday. Some of the comments posted on a forum for fans were:

"What an embarrassing, pathetic, laughing stock of a football club we've become."

"Another day, another blunder. I doubt even Leeds were in such a mess this time last summer, and look what happened to them."

"I am waiting with bated breath to hear who the Chuckle Brothers have signed after their trip to watch players abroad. With the amount of money they have to spend and the wages they can offer the best we can hope for is that little known Transvestitavian International I Sukblodov, who last scored in a brothel."

<LOL: Libelling Our Leaders ...>

jessicafischerqueen: Heh- my first thought was <sockpuppetry>.

Then I thought "Oh no, <Dom> might think it's me-- I better email him all my passwords and secret sites to prove it's not me.

Then I thought Ok no need to panic.

Then I started panicking.

Then, I started thinking it was one of our <merry, yet chess infected and thus somewhat mercurial, if not actually autistic> band of *there are chlidren about*.

But which one, I couldn't guess.

Then I started worrying that it was a supernatural phenonenon.

Luckily, I stopped worrying when I realized that <contra Aristotle> and <Pro-Wittgenstein> that there is no bona fide supernatural--

NOt because it does or does not exist-- but rather that the entire concept is a glitch of nomenclature that <Witt> solved with his elegant, and powerful first premise "The world is all that is the case".

Therefore there exists only the <ontonatural>.

What that is, exactly, remains largely unseen.

As <Heraclitus> "said" (via fragments collected by others)-- <Nature always hides herself."

Later, of course, <Heisenberg> pronounced that the Western Philosopher who's truth claims came closest to the current state of discoveries in <quantum physics> was non other than <Heraclitus>.

Then <Heisenberg> closed his book with the announcement that a new word other than "thing" would have to be invented in order to explain physics to the layman.

He belonged to that quaint, now long gone, school of science that cared what non scientists thought.

Then I started laughing at how funny your list was.

Then I was HORRIFIED to read about <Nigel Short>-- genuinely horrified-- despite my <spotted> personal history with "him."....

I discovered that I liked him very much due to his <chess virtuosity> and his <in yo face anit-political correctness honesty> in his public statements.

I was about to post something about how terrible it was and then..

I read the rest and was very relieved.

Oddly, I didn't care about the <unreal Nigel Short> getting cancer, because, following <Homer Simpson>:

It's funny cuz I don't know him.

Then I thought hang on I don't know the "real" Nigel Short either.

Then I thought good grief the libel laws are draconian in Britain.

So then my final thought was

So I can't type <Manchester @#$%ing United> at this website without getting sued by some <Pom Corporation>?

Then I got tired.

Ok sorry about this insane post <Dom>.

But your posts are <literal food for thought> for me.

Domdaniel: <Frogs vs Birds> Hmm, sounds like a play by an Ancient Bubble. Famous Ancient Bubbles on this site alone include Plato, Euripides & Socrates.

Nimzowitsch used Bird's Opening, 1.f4, on several occasions. At Kecskemet 1927 he used it against Kmoch, Colle and Steiner (W1 D1 L1).

But nobody ever seems to have played the From Gambit 1...e5 against him. I've found one game - W Schwan vs Nimzowitsch, 1905 - where Nimzo is on the *black* side. That was in his 'tactical' youth, when he played romantically and unsystematically.

It's not an enirely bad game, despite fading away to a draw. Nimzo seems to have missed an interesting technical win. In this position

click for larger view

White has just captured a pawn on g4. Should Black play 39...fxg4 or ...hxg4 ...?

Nimzo played ...fxg4 and soon drew. I believe ...hxg4 wins.

There are arguments for ...fxg4: defending knights have more trouble with h-pawns, and the defending king is further from the black pawns. But they're outweighed by the f-pawn's central control, as in the concrete line 39...hxg4 40.Ke3 g3 41.Nd1 [where else? e4, as in the game, is not available] and Black is winning, eg 41 ... cxb3 42.axb3 Ng6 43.c4 f4+ 44.Kf3 Nh4+ 45.Ke2 Kc5 wins.

Am I wrong?

Domdaniel: <Jess> Die Welt ist alles was der Fall ist.

The Falls is Greenaway's best film.

But, in my senility, I've started to find traditional art films - Resnais, Antonioni, Tarkovsky, Greenaway etc - a tad *boring*. I still think they're sublime, but in an abstract way. I'd actually rather watch a fast punky neo-German aktion-politik-komik-drama like <What to do in Case of Fire>.

Help me... if this keeps up I'll abandon Nimzo for, argh, Topalov, or somebody.

I need help, don't I?
