Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

  Domdaniel: <Zig> Heh. Spooky, innit?

Those 4-month subsriptions are most welcome, but it's good to get a tangible prize. I feel sorry for <MAJ> who managed the maximum five wins without hitting anything solid.

Dec-18-08  MostlyAverageJoe: Actually, I did hit the chess set prize and passed over it, thinking that the clue was too easy :-(

The entire story is here: chessgames.com chessforum

Enjoy :-)

Domdaniel: <MAJ> Ouch. That *is* tough. I hadn't even realized that the 'good' prizes were assigned to (allegedly) tough clues - I thought it was a random thing.

I also think you'd have cracked HYFIN before me, if you hadn't been in such a rush to disqualify yourself. ;)

Dec-18-08  MostlyAverageJoe: I'm flattered. Do you mean that you expected me to see this kind of page:

http://docs.google.com/View?docid=d...

before anyone else ?

:-) :-)

Dec-19-08  Woody Wood Pusher: Hey!

I keep clicking on that screen but it won't let me have the prize!

What gives?

Dec-19-08  Ragh: Its just an optical illusion.

Domdaniel: <MAJ> If you were to present CG with screen grabs of, say, another ten unclaimed prizes, they might come round to your point of view. Orr Knott.
Dec-19-08  MostlyAverageJoe: I kinda stopped looking for them by now.

Also, it is very easy to fake such a screen shot. The phrasing of "this <kind of> page" was quite intentional :-)

And no, I did not fake the other two (they gave me the HTML needed to fake the last one).

Besides, I bet I annoyed our gentle CG admins enough already :-)

Last year, there was an incentive to find more.

jessicafischerqueen: Holy Moly Am I ever <CLUE> less...

I was puzzled for days, <Dom>, by these enigmatic posts you've been leaving....

I hadn't the foggiest to what you were talking about, but I was afraid to ask in case they were <important film allusions> I should know about...

Then, acting on a tip from my good pal <Opragh Winfrey>, I found the awful truth...

HOLY COW LOOK AT THIS

<clue #35: prize claimed by Domdaniel! HYFIN
SOLUTION: V Georgiev vs S Smetankin, 2006
PRIZE: The Championship Series Chess Set by House of Staunton

COMMENT: The letters are elements in the periodic table. H=Hydrogen (atomic number 1). Y=Yttrium (atomic number 39). F=Fluorine (atomic number 9). I=Iodine (atomic number 53). N=Nitrogen (atomic number 7). String the numbers together to get the game ID number, 1399537. >

A: YOU WON A <howard hms123> Staunton Chess Set!!!!!

B: Only you could have unraveled such an impossibly abstruse "clue.."

And now I finally see the tangible results of your <frankly insane propensity for "calculatin'"> that I've been making fun of for three years...

No longer!!!

My hat is off to you!

jessicafischerqueen: Screamingly oblivious, more like it.

I'm the worst "link finder" in history.

I thought you guys were playing some kind of secret quiz game which had rules you had told about in back pages of <Frogspawn>.

I was too lazy to flip through back issues!!

I found out through <Ragh>, who won a prize too.

His user name is <Ragh>, but close friends know him as <Opragh Winfrey>.

<clue #42: prize claimed by wienke7! DOMINATED A Q
SOLUTION: Y Schwartz vs S J Szpisjak, 2000
PRIZE: A Four Month Free Subscription to Chessgames.com

COMMENT: "DOMINATED A Q" might imply "dominated a queen", which Schwartz certianly did, but it's also poker lingo--and Ylon Schwartz is a professional poker player. >

Well hold your horses buster I might have something to say about that...

"If you and JFQ want to exchange dirty.. etc. "

HAHAAH

Actually I highly doubt the admins are having fun at our expense there-- the "Dominated Queen" is a widely known phenomena in <Texas Holdem>-

IE- you have <Queen and Ace> in your hand but another player has <King and Ace> in their hand...

Which means you have a great hand, in theory, but in fact the guy with the <King Ace> has you "dominated" because no matter what cards fall on the table-- unless one of them is a Queen, the Ace King player is going to beat you.

Plus of course in Chess the Queen normally dominates.

It's pretty funny though

That games collection with the <chess prodigies>....

heh

Also, that <goddess blog> is a very high quality blog, and I think most blogs are rubbish.

Some very literate and educated chess lovin' women there with catholic interests....

(small "c" catholic, obviously)

I like the history articles in particular.. did you read the one about <Napoleon>?

Reminds me of the FEN history post I made about <Waterloo> in here that prompted you to name it <Frogspawn>...

(good thing I didn't employ the unfortunate term <wog>, for obvious reasons)

Disclaimer:

I'm aware I didn't coin the "word" <heh>, although <Eyal> did confirm that the meaning I use it for was not even in the Dictionary definition when he looked it up.

However, a little known fact about English is that <my Mom> actually invented the letter "h".

HEY! Not only did I have that in my Profile before you, but I have attributed it to YOU!!

This will make for a real mystery if future <electronic chess blog archaeologists> ever "dig" up our fora...

Do you think the <electronic age> has killed <bona fide> archaeology for the future?

What would the "archaeology of digital bits of something or other" be?

Domdaniel: Hey, Jess. It's 'anon' because Anon is one of my middle names ... right after Alcoholix, Narcotix, etc. And 'er' is also one of my <sob rickets>. As 'heh' is yours.

We could address one another like that:
- Er, hi
- Hello there, heh.

btw, remember (how could we forget?) the Case of the Dirty Limericks? Well, the very same folk who censored us have games like this in their database: Oral vs D Cummings, 2000

I like double standards.

jessicafischerqueen: I thought you meant <here and anon>, whatever that means.

I'd say something about the inappropriateness of you deliberately looking for dirty <CG.com Game pages>, if I hadn't already spent an embarrassingly large amount of time looking for players in our database with the names of animal noises.

Moo, Cow, and Baa are all fine members in standing.

This should be an inspiration for players such as Oink, Whinney and Gobble to garner their GM norms, one would think.

Seems the perpetrator carried them around in a valise.
