Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

As for this suggestion by Jess about "stripping" ... <"If JFQ wants to strip Domdaniel there are places for that kind of thing ..."> was, I believe, an official ruling?

Domdaniel: <MAJ> Yep, indeed I did, thanks. The cunning masterplan was to hold fire until one last difficult clue came up, and concentrate on it in hopes of the last NIC. But I found it literally impossible to resist: see clue, see possible answer, check it, wow it's unclaimed ... click!

I understand your earlier predicament better now. Not clicking on a prize banner goes against the grain...

Anyway, chasing a NIC on top of the chess set was just plain greedy.

<Quylthulg> will be next on five, I bet.

Yeah, I resisted for just about a minute it took to capture the screen, and a whole heap of good did it do to me :-(

Domdaniel: <Jess> -- <Yes, quite right and in the "real world" as well where people have guns and armies.>

Um, right, yeah. Was this in response to my comment about the <escalator people>? Things were moving fast just then, and I got confused as to what constituted a which to whom.

Two further appendages:

(1) Apropos the linguistic thread riff thing that Niels and I had going (at 4-5am Euro-time, I think) ... somebody once defined a 'language' as "a dialect with an army and a navy".

(2) A new scent - I'm reluctant to use the word 'perfume' - has been launched on the Festivus market by none other than Burger King (known as 'the King' to employees -- they don't think Elvis will sue). This product - <Eau de Flame-grilled Meat in a Bun>, or whatever, is allegedly aimed at men.

<Unstrictions for Scent Deployment> *Spray meaty scent liberally on torso, and go 'hunting' women ... you smell like Man the Hunter, so stay upwind of nervous wolly mammoths ... you find some women ... women shriek ... you forgot to put your clothes back on ... after the shrieks, the giggles and guffaws ... "Is it a member?" they ask ...*

Moral: a meaty smell is the *olfactory camouflage unit* in the army of the escalator people.

Domdaniel: <Combinations and chemistry are your only men>.

This related observation was made on the Stahlberg page by <Percyblakeney> in 2004 and by <Brankat> in 2007:

<Larsen called Stahlberg the best "combination" player ever. According to Larsen, nobody combined Chess and alcohol like Stahlberg did.>

The voting for <funniest kibbutzer> has turned to <negative attack ads> and <questionable behaviors>!!

One of the frontrunners has even changed her vote and is now voting for herself.

Oh wait OK that was me...

But "we" still hope you can make it up for the vote.

The odd part there is the other frontrunner is dead serious about the whole thing. They managed to beg their way to victory last year and are predictably groveling for votes again. I realize we all have different views of what is funny, but I consider them perhaps the unfunniest person on the site.

Domdaniel: <Jess> I screwed up again ... a hanging chad or a *technical* violation of the rules, otherwise known as "being late" or "missing the deadline". Something of which I have considerable experience.

Actually, back in <irreal life> (or IRL), I have work to do: a December 24th deadline looms. First they wanted it Friday, then they called and said, well, no, really it was required urgently on Weds morning, all 700 words of it, about ... I'm not sure. Haven't cracked the 'about' bit yet.

It's been strange, the last few days, hearing people say stuff like "are you getting a break at Christmas?" and "so when do you finish up for the holidays?" ... while I try to explain that (a) I'm about to *start* again, having taken most of the last week off, freeing me for really important things like the CG holiday competition, and (b) I won my very own Staunton!

Think I'll get him to edit Shakespeare for me.

Sorry about the unhung chad, but you'll always be *my* funniest kibbutznik. Popular democracy, pah, pfui, yerra, ergh, bouf, doh!

  jessicafischerqueen: It's nae worries <Dom>.

In addition to your <fine new House of Staten Island Chess set>, as an ardent football punter I know you'll be pleased that <Ireland> is currently at the top of the table in their division...

heh

IRL-

URL- "unreal life"

HAHAHAAHAHAAH

get it? I suppose you do since I just now realized you were already making that pun, but in reverse... Ok then!

Best of luck on your <Festivus "Feats of Strength'>, and of course the always popular <Festivus "The Airing of Grievances">...

Stonehenge: <User: Jesus Christ has turned up there in person.> I think they banned him now. History repeats itself. Pity though, he did some nice woodpushing in his time.
Dec-24-08  Ragh: <domdaniel> How is it possible for you to think with corpus callosum since, according to wiki, its primary function is only to facilitate communication between the two hemispheres.

<as a chronic left-hander> This might mean that you are a right-brained person, which, according to the above article - "Right brains embrace new ideas. They are future thinkers and enjoy introducing controversial ideas. They believe that everything is possible, tend to be very creative, and don't see the pitfalls along the way. They leave those little details to the lefts." :)

<clue adventures> I came really close to solving some of them but was not fast enough. Like in the case of The doctor's gift, it occured to me that it must belong to one of <tpstar>'s games, but when I went to his page I saw 45 games, only to give up ultimately. And also the <clue#18: Time 12:07:25>, for which i even went to the TIME magazine website to search for the archives and while doing so it occured to me that 25 could only be a 2 digit year name. Well, speed is the key. Also, I ended up being able to view only about 8 or 9 clues in their nascent stage. Darn those time zones!

<Ron Howard> You mean the director of the recent movie? He was on 'The Daily Show' last week.

<Small world, eh?> It sure is. Talking about world, here is one of my all-time favorite geography quiz/game. http://www.travelpod.com/traveler-iq. My highest score there is around 570,000.

<next tournament is planned to take place in a few weeks> Wish you all the best! The clue hunt must surely had its share of positive effect on your <pattern hemisphere>, which is of enormous use while playing chess.

  Domdaniel: <Ragh> Pitfalls? What pitfalls?

I had the same experience with last year's competition -- regularly on the right track, but either giving up too soon or losing out to somebody faster. This year I took a slightly different approach and it paid off.

I see the last NIC prize went to one of my favorite-style clues - a grid with cryptic crossword-type hints. I think I might have been in the chase for that if I hadn't already reached the maximum. Certainly Nataf would have been high on my list of suspects, as I used him here before when trying to construct a 'magic square' out of chess players' names.

Either way, brilliant. Heh. Any activity that yokes together JC and Woody WP can't be all bad.

Domdaniel: Our very good friend and role model, <Joe Wms> - the original self-styled 'crabby old fart' - has announced that he is retiring from CG. Despite the magnification 'bells and whistles' in Vista, Joe's declining eyesight has made it too difficult for him to keep in touch.

I'd just like to acknowledge my debt to him. His forum - the original <funny farm> - showed me what a forum could do.

We could start a petition to have chessgames.com converted to audio format, but there might be trouble ... "White's move six is Queen takes f7, checkmate ... 'LOL' says <user:NN> and 2237 others" would probably be OK. But lines like "Domdaniel replied 'firkin ell' (a firkin is an old British measure equal to 9 gallons, and an ell is a type of building ... no, we don't know what he meant either)" might cause problems.

Anyhow: here's to <Joe>. And thanks for all the fish.

Dec-24-08  brankat: Hi Dom!

Sincere wishes for the Holiday Season!

Dec-24-08  Ragh: " The old dogmas, such as the ossified teaching on the center, the worship of the open game, and in general the whole formalistic conception of the game, <who> bothers himself today about any of these<?> "
