   Jan-06-19 G McCarthy vs M Kennefick, 1977 (replies)

Domdaniel: Maurice Kennefick died over the new year, 2018-2019. RIP. It was many years since I spoke to him. He gave up chess, I reckon, towards the end of the 80s, though even after that he was sometimes lured out for club games. I still regard this game, even after so many years, as the ...

   Jan-06-19 Maurice Kennefick (replies)

Domdaniel: Kennefick died over the 2018-19 New Year. Formerly one of the strongest players in Ireland, he was the first winner of the Mulcahy tournament, held in honour of E.N. Mulcahy, a former Irish champion who died in a plane crash. I played Kennefick just once, and had a freakish win, ...

Domdaniel: <NBZ> -- Thanks, NBZ. Enjoy your chortle. Apropos nothing in particular, did you know that the word 'chortle' was coined by Lewis Carroll, author of 'Alice in Wonderland'? I once edited a magazine called Alice, so I can claim a connection. 'Chortle' requires the jamming ...

Domdaniel: <al wazir> - It's not easy to go back through past Holiday Present Hunts and discover useful information. Very few people have played regularly over the years -- even the players who are acknowledged as best, <SwitchingQuylthulg> and <MostlyAverageJoe> have now ...

   Jan-04-19 G Neave vs B Sadiku, 2013 (replies)

Domdaniel: Moral: if you haven't encountered it before, take it seriously. Remember Miles beating Karpov with 1...a6 at Skara. Many so-called 'irregular' openings are quite playable.

   Dec-30-18 Robert Enders vs S H Langer, 1968

Domdaniel: <HMM> - Heh, well, yes. I also remembered that Chuck Berry had a hit with 'My Ding-a-ling' in the 1970s. I'm not sure which is saddest -- that the author of Johnny B. Goode and Memphis Tennessee and Teenage Wedding - among other short masterpieces - should sink to such ...

Dec-11-10  crawfb5: Yes, bongo was a lucky strike as well. I'd often photographed them at zoos and knew the name immediately.

I did get "Kastler" last year, again probably just ahead of the usual suspects.

Annie K.: <craw> thanks for the Multi Links tip - my default and favorite browser is Opera, but I've got about 6 browsers installed, FireFox included. Sounds like this add-on may be worth using FF for the Klu Hunt.

The text-only setting, I've been doing since year one... :)

Domdaniel: If I sleep 1/3 of each day, and 2/3 of all clues appear when I'm asleep ... I may switch to sleeping for 16 hours daily.

Or I could try going mad.

Anyhoo, I'm off for my beauty sleep. I fully expect to see another batch gone by what I might technically term the morning after.

G'nite.

Dec-11-10  hms123: <Annie> And it's not like I am going to wear my t-shirt to class any time soon.

Yeah, I thought I was gone too.

*Was* there?

I can't complain too much today. Only one missed overnight, and then I had a fair go at the 'Generations of Short' klu, despite its bifurcations. I took a wrong turn at Marshall, going with the man rather than the Allies.

I make the general assumption that, as clues were written in advance, they can't track current events too closely. So 'Anand's last game' might have presented existential problems (as does the pair of twin primes near the top of the gid number range).

Hey ho. At some point, if I wait, some genuinely cryptic stuff will arrive, narrowing the field down to the dozen or so of us who speak deep crypto.

Plus the entire staff of GCHQ, Mossad, the CIA, the FSB, and the Chinese Remainder Theorem, all of whom lurk under cryptic field-names.

Domdaniel: "Information wants to be free".

No, it doesn't. Back in 1995 (!) Neal Stephenson wrote ('In the Kingdom of Mao Bell') about the Chinese hacker ethic and its utter disinterest in Western notions of individual freedom.

"They are rebuilding the individual. We see the future through the binoculars of the people." - WS Burroughs

The great Western myth, from Plato to Nato ...

hehehe, I know - I thought of that just before the hunt started :D

The problem is more that I have only been around during clue #3. For the rest I was either gone or did not notice that there were solvable clues..

<Dom: <<I think there <should> be another clue soon... ;)>

Dunno rilly. I played some blitz, checked back at 5:30 my time (3:30 yours) and klu #9 was already solved.

<Every time I read 'Sofia rules', I think "well, Judit isn't bad either".>

Heh. Me too!

Dec-12-10  dakgootje: Do you have a job? :|

Well, they say I'm a psychologist.
I heard yesterday that, over here, the title 'journalist' is not protected anymore either, so de juro I have two jobs. De Jura I like vacation more.
